Book From Vacillation to Resolve

Download or read book From Vacillation to Resolve written by Julian McPhillips Jr. and published by NewSouth Books. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Vacillation to Resolve tells the little-known story of the French Communist Party’s role in the Resistance movement against the Nazis during World War II. Author Julian McPhillips Jr. researched this story and published it as his senior thesis at Princeton University in 1968. It is being published in book form for the first time on the fiftieth anniversary of his graduation. McPhillips divides the behavior of the French Communist resisters into three stages: The first brief phase in the late summer of 1939 was an anti-fascist reflex which was repressed in the early occupation. During the second stage, from October 1939 to mid-1941, the party’s members fought vigorously against the French war governments of Daladier and Reynaud. Following the fall of France, under the Russo-German Pact, French Communists achieved a brief “semi-legality” in the period leading up to the German attack on Russia. Even in this period, however, some French Communists left the party to resist the Germans on their own initiative. The final stage was from June 22, 1941, to the liberation of France in August 1944. The French Communists were united in their resolve and effected sabotage, distributed clandestine media materials, and fought bravely in organized guerrilla (maquis) actions. Despite playing key roles in the fighting, however, the Communists jockeyed with the Gaullists not only on Resistance tactics but also on post-war plans. Overall, following the German attack against the USSR, the war for French Communists changed from an imperialistic conflict to the defense of liberty.

Book excerpt: After the debacle in Gettysburg, Jefferson Davis must deal with, not only the Union Army' s new commander, Ulysses S. Grant, but also his own political enemies at home, whose ranks have been growing in proportion to the South' s diminishing hopes. His wife, Varina, in the meantime, has been increasingly involved politically and socially with his Minister of State, Judah Benjamin. Their relationship has now developed to the point where they dare to admit to one another that they are indeed in love. Silas, the slave who ran away from Davis' plantation, continues his work in Richmond as a spy. However, his cover is now blown, and he has come under the scrutiny of the Provost Marshal, General John H. Winder. The young spy' s sudden disappearance will thrust Rachel, who had been supplying him with information from inside the Confederate White House, into the arms of General James Chestnut' s body servant and put her life in extreme danger. In this third and final volume, the force of events doesn' t bring the characters together as it had done in the earlier volumes. The action instead drives them apart. However, their individual fates will be determined by the same catastrophic event -- the violent and bloody end of the conflict which has ripped their country asunder.

Book excerpt: Breaking with a powerful tradition among scholars that insists that Beckett’s Irishness is no more than an accident of birth, Harrington provides compelling evidence to the ways in which many of Beckett’s best-known texts are deeply involved in Irish issues and situations. Providing new readings of such works as More Pricks Than Kicks, Murphy, Watt, Mercier and Camier, Waiting for Godot, and Endgame, Harrington provides an understanding of Beckett’s work in its representation of Ireland, of Irish history, and of Irish literary traditions.

Book excerpt: A financially comfortable but troubled young London author, Alex Hargreaves stumbles across the work of an unknown writer from the early 1990s, Vernon Crane, and presuming the missing Crane is dead, decides to pass the work off as his own. The problem is that the novel he wishes to plagiarize has been split among Crane’s disparate and scattered group of friends, all of whom, twenty years later, are struggling with the demands of a life in a Britain in which current trends toward inequality and the concentration of political power have accelerated. Hargreave’s mission to track down Crane's work sets in motion a series of encounters alternately tragic, redemptive and liberating and threatens to destroy Hargreaves own world in the process. Combining the best elements of a literary thriller and speculative fiction, Resolution Way is a bleakly humorous satire on contemporary Britain, a meditation on the power of the past, the forces that shape our lives and the ways in which the possibility of the miraculous still remains.

Book AfroSymbiocity as a Psychology of Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Africa

Download or read book AfroSymbiocity as a Psychology of Conflict and Conflict Resolution in Africa written by Ilongo Fritz Ngale and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2018-11-07 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights original and traditional African strategies for conflict resolution, based on four Basotho cultural concepts: namely, Botho (or unity of being), Pula (or universalism), Khotso (or communalism), and Nala (or humanism). In doing so, it provides the missing psychological and African cultural pieces in the puzzle of conflict and conflict resolution This paradigm, “AfroSymbiocity”, is Sub-Saharan African in scope, but will have universal relevance. The book transcends theory by demonstrating the application of traditional African peace and conflict resolution strategies through considering a historical personage, King Moshoeshoe, who effectively used authentic African conflict resolution strategies to forge harmony in Southern Africa, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The book represents a major contribution to research and literature in peace and conflict studies, and will be vital for students, researchers, and professionals in peace studies, national and international decision makers, and bodies which strive for world peace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich inner world of a human being is far more complex than either/or. You can love and hate, want to go and want to stay, feel both joy and sadness. Psychologist William Miller--one of the world's leading experts on the science of change--offers a fresh perspective on ambivalence and its transformative potential in this revealing book. Rather than trying to overcome indecision by force of will, Dr. Miller explores what happens when people allow opposing arguments from their “inner committee members” to converse freely with each other. Learning to tolerate and even welcome feelings of ambivalence can help you get unstuck from unwanted habits, clarify your desires and values, explore the pros and cons of tough decisions, and open doorways to change. Vivid examples from everyday life, literature, and history illustrate why we are so often "of two minds," and how to work through it.
