Book excerpt: This guide is written for biomedical innovators seeking to improve the lives of patients by translating innovative technologies into medical technologies. The contents are focused primarily on business principles that have been distilled from hundreds of projects as part of the Coulter Foundation's Translational Partners Program and Coulter Translational Reward Awards. To date, the Foundation has funded more than 600 projects, which in the first 11 years have raised close to $6 billion in funding. The course Concept to Clinic: Commercializing Innovation (C3i), offered by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), forms the basis of this Guide. This course has helped hundreds of university innovators, engineers, clinicians, and scientists learn how to commercialize the technologies they have developed in a very demanding market. The C3i program is based on the Coulter commercialization process, an approach to biomedical research translation developed and continuously refined by the Foundation in collaboration with its academic partners across the country.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The topic of this book, the commercialization of public-sector technology, continues to grow in importance in the United States and sirnilarsocieties. The issues involved are relevant to many roles including those of policy makers, managers, patent attorneys, licensing agents, and technical staff members of public technology sources. Institutions increasingly involved in the process include federal and other governmentallaboratories and their related agencies, public universities and their state governments, public and private transfer agents and, of course, all the private recipients of public technology. Scarcely a day goes by without a significant event related to technology transfer and commercialization. The popular business press is regularly carrying articles addressing the issues, explaining new initiatives and describing events of notable success or failure.[l] As an example of current important events, the Technology Reinvestment Project (TRP) is forrnu lating its initiatives totransfer public technology and promote technology-based publiclprivate partnerships as a collaboration between the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), the National Science Foundation (NSF) the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), and the Department of Energy, Defense Programs (DOE/DP).

Book Moving Ideas from Lab to Marketplace

Download or read book Moving Ideas from Lab to Marketplace written by Riccardo Fini and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many of today's best innovations - the ones that have created powerhouse companies and have transformed industries, regions and society itself - started as a discovery in a lab. Firms that know how to turn a promising discovery into a viable product gain a tremendous competitive advantage. Science commercialization drives innovation in many industries and localities, and is an important part of innovation and technology management. New scientific inventions and knowledge creation also can impact society, and ultimately can contribute to developing a better world. Not surprisingly, more academic researchers are studying how science can be effectively commercialized, emphasizing technology-commercialization activities, university-industry collaborations, and academic entrepreneurship. We reviewed the leading management journals and identified 40 articles from the past 15 years that used empirical data from science commercialization to advance management research. Two major themes emerged. The two themes were: (a) managing the complex, bumpy and time-consuming process of moving from academic to commercial contexts, and (b) issues that arise when the people engaged in science commercialization try to balance different goals amongst stakeholders. This article highlights key areas that are addressed within each of the two themes. A deeper discussion can be found in our Journal of Management Studies article and in the other articles referenced.

Book Out of the Lab and On the Market

Download or read book Out of the Lab and On the Market written by Tetsu Natsume and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-14 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tetsu Natsume of Sony Computer Science Labs (Sony CSL) has been pioneering technology promotion for a decade. As he seeks marketplace opportunities for ground-breaking research, he plays the role of a Technology Producer -- a role that will be increasingly important as organizations seek optimally efficient and effective applications of basic research. Natsume's task has been greatly facilitated by his association with Sony CSL, a research lab founded by co-author Mario Tokoro. While CSL is owned by SONY, it nevertheless operates almost entirely independently. At CSL, a diverse, cosmopolitan group of talented researchers are free to explore any idea that might one day change the world. Natsume's task is to optimise that process by identifying the best path to the market for the new insights that pour out of CSL. Functioning somewhat like a movie producer, Natsume has blazed a trail for technology promoters the world over. He explains his techniques for overcoming challenges and embracing opportunities. His "10 core principles of technology promotion", which offer the reader an especially valuable framework for moving between the very different worlds of the lab and the marketplace, cover the importance of appropriate timing, speed, commitment and mindset, while being rigorously simple and boldly ambitious. This book is an eye-opening primer for anyone interested in realising and optimising the commercial value of basic research.

This book was released on 2022-01-14 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The book is a guide for academic researchers, especially scientists and engineers, on how to move their discoveries to the marketplace. Few academics understand what tech transfer is or how it works, and many shy away from it because they equate commercialization with starting a company. Yet those same individuals can be intrigued to learn of additional pathways that enable discoveries to be translated into marketable products or services. We help researchers explore multiple routes for commercialization, guides them through the personal decisions they must face, describes programs designed to help them, and provides advice to avoid common problems. We frame commercialization as the primary (often the only) way for research to solve societal problems. Impact can best be achieved if, a discovery leads to an invention/ that fills an unmet need in the marketplace. The range of entities that support technology transfer are described, and we offer best practices for researchers to maximize support the process. Engaging researchers effectively requires that institutions themselves adapt. Aligning commercialization with the rewards system is crucial, and integrating commercialization training into graduate and postdoctoral programs will produce the next generation of academic inventors. Furthermore, women and minorities face special challenges that must be overcome so that everyone's discovery receives support for commercialization. Woven through the book are profiles of academic inventors, which illustrate key points and help researchers to visualize themselves in such a role"--

Book Handbook of Experimental Economic Methodology

Download or read book Handbook of Experimental Economic Methodology written by Guillaume R. Fréchette and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-01-02 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Experimental Economic Methodology, edited by Guillaume R. Fréchette and Andrew Schotter, aims to confront and debate the issues faced by the growing field of experimental economics. For example, as experimental work attempts to test theory, it raises questions about the proper relationship between theory and experiments. As experimental results are used to inform policy, the utility of these results outside the lab is questioned, and finally, as experimental economics tries to integrate ideas from other disciplines like psychology and neuroscience, the question of their proper place in the discipline of economics becomes less clear. This book contains papers written by some of the most accomplished scholars working at the intersection of experimental, behavioral, and theoretical economics talking about methodology. It is divided into four sections, each of which features a set of papers and a set of comments on those papers. The intention of the volume is to offer a place where ideas about methodology could be discussed and even argued. Some of the papers are contentious---a healthy sign of a dynamic discipline---while others lay out a vision for how the authors think experimental economics should be pursued. This exciting and illuminating collection of papers brings light to a topic at the core of experimental economics. Researchers from a broad range of fields will benefit from the exploration of these important questions.
