Book The Leaderless Economy

Download or read book The Leaderless Economy written by Peter Temin and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2013-01-20 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new way to understand financial crises—and a blueprint for tomorrow's recovery The Leaderless Economy reveals why international financial cooperation is the only solution to today's global economic crisis. In this timely and important book, Peter Temin and David Vines argue that our current predicament is a catastrophe rivaled only by the Great Depression. Taking an in-depth look at the history of both, they explain what went wrong and why, and demonstrate why international leadership is needed to restore prosperity and prevent future crises. Temin and Vines argue that the financial collapse of the 1930s was an "end-of-regime crisis" in which the economic leader of the nineteenth century, Great Britain, found itself unable to stem international panic as countries abandoned the gold standard. They trace how John Maynard Keynes struggled for years to identify the causes of the Great Depression, and draw valuable lessons from his intellectual journey. Today we are in the midst of a similar crisis, one in which the regime that led the world economy in the twentieth century—that of the United States—is ending. Temin and Vines show how America emerged from World War II as an economic and military powerhouse, but how deregulation and a lax attitude toward international monetary flows left the nation incapable of reining in an overleveraged financial sector and powerless to contain the 2008 financial panic. Fixed exchange rates in Europe and Asia have exacerbated the problem. The Leaderless Economy provides a blueprint for how renewed international leadership can bring today's industrial nations back into financial balance--domestically and between each other.

Book Macroeconomic Policy

Download or read book Macroeconomic Policy written by Farrokh K. Langdana and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an applications-oriented text designed for individuals who desire a hands-on approach to analyzing the effects of fiscal and monetary policies. Significantly updated to provide an understanding of the post-financial crisis economy, the third edition covers the subprime crisis in detail, discussing monetary policies enacted in its wake, such as quantitative easing, tapering, carry trades, CMOs, and monetization. Even more globally oriented than previous editions, this volume links the Great Recession and US Monetary Policy to global hot capital flows and currency pegs. This edition also revisits the Eurozone in significant detail; discussing its history, its macroeconomic design challenges, and its present imperiled state, in the context of global macropolicy. Finally, this volume analyzes the "China syndrome" and explores the effects of slower trend growth in China on the rest of the world. India, with its different—almost supply-side—approach to macropolicy is also studied in detail. The third edition contains several brand-new cases and media articles that are carefully positioned to relate explicitly to theory, and to look ahead to and preempt global macro situations and polices in the years to come. MBA students and Executive MBA students who appreciate the importance of monetary and fiscal analysis will find this text to be right on target. Financial analysts and individual investors who need to strip away economic myths and jargon and systematically examine and understand the effects of macro policies on variables such as inflation, output, employment and interest rates, will also find the book extremely useful.

Book The United States as a Debtor Nation

Download or read book The United States as a Debtor Nation written by William R Cline and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2005-09-30 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States has once again entered into a period of large external imbalances. This time the current account deficit, at nearly 6 percent of GDP in 2004, is much larger than in the last episode, when the deficit peaked at about 3.5 percent of GDP in 1987. Moreover, the deficit is on track to become substantially larger over the next several years. This study examines whether the large and growing current account deficit is a problem, and if so, how the problem can be solved. A central policy conclusion of this study is that it is increasingly important that the United States reduce its external current account deficit. This deficit is no longer benign as it arguably was in the late 1990s when it was financing high investment instead of high consumption and large government dissaving.

Book Economics of Global Business

Download or read book Economics of Global Business written by Rodrigo Zeidan and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2018-11-13 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A textbook with innovative real-world macroeconomic analyses of timely policy issues, with case studies and examples from more than fifty countries. This timely and refreshingly real–world focused textbook examines some of the world's most critical policy issues through a macroeconomics lens. After presenting analytical foundations, modeling tools, and theoretical perspectives, Economics of Global Business goes a step further than most other texts, with a practical look at the local and multinational tradeoffs facing economic policymakers in more than fifty countries. Topics range from income equality and the financial crisis to GDP, inflation and unemployment, and, notably, one of the first macroeconomic examinations of climate change. Written by a globetrotting economist who teaches and consults on three continents, Economics of Global Business aims not for definitive answers but rather to provide a better understanding of the context-dependent rationales, constraints, and consequences of economic policy decisions. The book covers long-run and short-run growth (with examples from the United States, China, the European Union, South Korea, Japan, Latin America, Africa, Australia, and Vietnam); financial crises and central banks; monetary and fiscal policies; government budgets; currency regimes; climate change and macroeconomics; income inequality; and globalization. All chapters rely on recent and historical examples of economic policy in action. The book is particularly suitable for use as an introduction to macroeconomics for business students.

Book Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises

Download or read book Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises written by Ray Dalio and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2022-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ray Dalio, the legendary investor and #1 New York Times bestselling author of Principles—whose books have sold more than five million copies worldwide—shares his unique template for how debt crises work and principles for dealing with them well. This template allowed his firm, Bridgewater Associates, to anticipate 2008’s events and navigate them well while others struggled badly. As he explained in his #1 New York Times bestseller Principles, Ray Dalio believes that most everything happens over and over again through time so that by studying patterns one can understand the cause-effect relationships behind events and develop principles for dealing with them well. In this three-part research series, he does just that for big debt crises and shares his template in the hopes of reducing the chances of big debt crises happening and helping them be better managed in the future. The template comes in three parts: 1. The Archetypal Big Debt Cycle (which explains the template) 2. Three Detailed Cases (which examines in depth the 2008 financial crisis, the 1930s Great Depression, and the 1920s inflationary depression of Germany’s Weimar Republic) 3. Compendium of 48 Cases (which is a compendium of charts and brief descriptions of the worst debt crises of the last 100 years) Whether you’re an investor, a policy maker, or are simply interested in debt, this unconventional perspective from one of the few people who navigated the crisis successfully, Principles for Navigating Big Debt Crises will help you understand the economy and markets in revealing new ways.
