Book The Sagas of Fridthjof the Bold

Download or read book The Sagas of Fridthjof the Bold written by and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2009-12-14 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Popular in the 19th century for its sweeping, adventurous, romantic plot and tender love story, the Saga of Fridthjof the Bold was largely neglected in the 20th century. Now, a new and fresh translation of both versions of this Old Norse saga restores it to glory. Also included is the swashbuckling Saga of Thorstein Vikingsson, the father of the hero Fridthjof; the Tale of King Vikar, telling of Fridthjof's descendants; and plenty of notes and commentary giving the saga's historical and cultural background. These tales of adventure, war, magic, and love can still thrill the heart today, as they did centuries ago.

  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Viking America written by Geraldine Barnes and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2001 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viking America examined through the writing and rewriting of the Vinland story from the middle ages to the twentieth century. The accounts in the Vinland sagas of the great voyages to the northeast coast of America in the early years of the eleventh century have often been obscured by detailed argument over the physical identity of the West Atlantic landwhich its Scandinavian discoverers named Vinland. Geraldine Barnes leaves archaeological evidence aside and returns to the Old Norse narratives, Groenlendinga saga (Saga of Greenlanders) and Eiriks saga rauda(Saga of Eric the Red), in her study of the writing and rewriting of the Vinland story from the middle ages to the late twentieth century. She sets the sagas in the context of Iceland's transition from paganism to Christianity; later chapters explore the Vinland story in relation to issues of regional pride and national myths of foundation in nineteenth- and early twentieth-century America, to the ethos of popular imperialism during the same periodin English literature, and, in the late twentieth century, to postcolonial concerns. GERALDINE BARNES is associate professor of English, University of Sydney.

Book Skates Made of Bone

Download or read book Skates Made of Bone written by B.A. Thurber and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2020-03-05 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice skates made from animal bones were used in Europe for millennia before metal-bladed skates were invented. Archaeological sites have yielded thousands of examples, some of them dating to the Bronze Age. They are often mentioned in popular books on the Vikings and sometimes appear in children's literature. Even after metal skates became the norm, people in rural areas continued to use bone skates into the early 1970s. Today, bone skates help scientists and re-enactors understand migrations and interactions among ancient peoples. This book explains how to make and use them and chronicles their history, from their likely invention in the Eurasian steppes to their disappearance in the modern era.
