Book Frigates of the Royal Canadian Navy 1943 1974

Download or read book Frigates of the Royal Canadian Navy 1943 1974 written by Ken Macpherson and published by St. Catharines, Ont. : Vanwell Pub.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is extraordinary that one seldom hears of the finest anti-submarine vessels built in Canada during the entire Second World War: frigates.Frigates, initially dubbed "twin-screw corvettes" were designed by William Reed of Smith's Dock company. They were to prove their worth as ocean escorts and were important contributors to victory over the U-boats.Perhaps because of their late arrival on the scene, wartime photographs of frigates are now scarce. The purpose of this book is to reproduce more than one illustration of each ship, especially those that were rebuilt to "Prestonian class" configuration after the war.

Book British Destroyers Frigates

Download or read book British Destroyers Frigates written by Norman Friedman and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Second World War the old categories of destroyer and frigate have tended to merge, a process that this book traces back to the radically different 'Tribal' class destroyers of 1936. It deals with the development of all the modern destroyer classes that fought the war, looks at the emergency programmes that produced vast numbers of trade protection vessels - sloops, corvettes and frigates - then analyses the pressures that shaped the post-war fleet, and continued to dominate design down to recent years. Written by America's leading authority, it is an objective but sympathetic view of the difficult economic and political environment in which British designers had to work, and benefits from the author's ability to compare and contrast the US Navy's experience. Norman Friedman is renowned for his ability to explain the policy and strategy changes that drive design decisions, and his latest book uses previously unpublished material to draw a new and convincing picture of British naval policy over the previous seventy years and more. Hugely successful with enthusiasts and professionals alike from its first publication in 2006, this is the book's third edition.

Book Betrayed

  • Author : Richard O. Mayne
  • Publisher : UBC Press

Download or read book Betrayed written by Richard O. Mayne and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In January 1944, Vice Admiral Percy Walker Nelles was fired from his position as head of the Royal Canadian Navy. Betrayed reveals the true story behind the dismissal: a divisive power struggle between two elite groups within the RCN pitted the navy's regular officers against a small group of self-appointed spokesmen for the voluntary naval reserve. Threats of public scandal, mass insurrection, and political intimidation caused one of the worst breakdowns ever in Canadian civil-military relations. This fascinating investigation into the machinations of a divided navy tackles important questions of military professionalism, leadership, and identity.

Book excerpt: The Far Distant Ships, first published in 1950, recounts the often overlooked but vital contribution made by the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) to the Allied victory in World War II. Especially critical in protecting the endless convoys crossing the North Atlantic from the US to Great Britain, the Canadian navy used its limited men and ships to their utmost. Their resourcefulness was also reflected in their development of the corvette, a small convoy escort ship, built in Canadian shipyards, that proved to be one of the most effective antisubmarine vessels of the war. The RCN also served important roles in Allied landings in North Africa, Italy, and Normandy. Illustrated throughout with photographs, maps, and figures; and an appendix details principal ships of the RCN and their commanders, and other organizational details.

Book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945

Download or read book The Canadian Naval Chronicle 1939 1945 written by Robert A. Darlington and published by St. Catharines, Ont. : Vanwell Pub.. This book was released on 1998 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In World War II the Canadian Navy embarked on a five-year anti-submarine offensive with a tiny fleet of six destroyers and a navy largely untrained in submarine warfare. This chronicle of ship successes and losses charts the increase in fighting capability of the Canadian naval forces and their growing success against enemy submarines and surface warships. From the dreadful loss of sixteen ships out of a single convoy in 1941, to the painstaking teamwork of hunting down and destroying an asdic contact a few years later, the authors have managed to capture the drama of these events in considerable detail. The information provided in each account represents comprehensive research into the incident from available records and from personal recollections and interviews collected by the authors. Each includes the ships and crews involved on both sides, their movements just prior to the event, the action itself, the casualty lists, and the medals awarded as a result of the action. This book also contains, for the first time, a complete record of all the Canadian owned Merchant ships lost, as well as a table of RCAF Squadron successes against enemy U-boats. --

Book Coalition Navies during the Korean War

Download or read book Coalition Navies during the Korean War written by Ian Bowers and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-13 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed assessment of the role of navies in the Korean War. It highlights that, despite being predominantly a land war, navies played a vital part. Moreover, the naval war was not solely a U.S. operation. Smaller navies from many countries made important contributions both in supporting the United States and carrying out independent and combined naval operations. This subject holds special importance since current Western strategic thinking and capabilities emphasise the necessity of combined naval operations involving multiple navies in any potential future naval conflict. The example set by the Korean War therefore offers valuable insights into the operational and strategic problems, and benefits and opportunities of contemporary and future combined coalition naval operations.

Download or read book HMCS Swansea written by Fraser McKee and published by St. Catharines, Ont. : Vanwell Pub.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HMCS Swansea is the story of a ship, just one of Canada's several hundred warships. It is also the story of the men who served in her, and of other ships who operated with her, in wartime in EG-9, and in peacetime in her various training roles. It is a representative tale that could have been told, and has been, of any one of a hundred similar ships of the Royal Canadian Navy.HMCS Swansea is typical, yet atypical. Typical in that she participated in the Battle of the Atlantic in the same way as her sister frigates; atypical in that she was involved in the destruction of four U-boats, more than any other RCN ship. And it was in this role of hunter-killer that she was absolutely the best. Those who served in Swansea remember her with affection; she generated, and for some still generates, much joy, remembrance and even love. All think of her as their ship.

Book Pendant Numbers of the Royal Navy

Download or read book Pendant Numbers of the Royal Navy written by Ben Warlow and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2021-07-31 with total page 1489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pendant (or pennant) numbers have been used by individual ships of the Royal Navy for purposes of identification for more than 100 years. They were also used in all the navies of the British Empire so that ships could be easily transferred from one navy to another without changing her number. They offer the simplest and clearest way to identify a ship, but until now there has been little in the way of consistent and accurate information, and certainly no single location where you can look up or research complete pendant numbers. The book is designed as an easy-to-use reference work and as such is, in the main, composed of alpha-numeric listings to enable the user to find and identify warships by reference to ship name and to identify specific pendant numbers assigned to that name; or by pendant number to identify specific vessels assigned that number at various times. It begins with an introduction and a brief history of visual signalling used by the Royal Navy before industrialisation, and explains how the large numbers of identical ships being built brought about the need to identify specific ships within fleets to aid signalling and tactical deployment. There follow chapters covering the pendant numbers of the surface fleet and submarines (which stopped using them once boats began to spend so little time on the surface), and then pedant numbers by ship name. A significant chapter lists the pendant numbers assigned to the British Pacific Fleet during the Pacific campaign of WWII together with an explanation of why numbers were assigned, and an examination of missing ‘A’ series pendants known to have been carried by some vessels during the conflict. The BPF numbers have only recently come to light and there is still much that is not known but this section provides the most comprehensive study of available data at this time. There is also an appendix covering deck letters assigned to aviation capable ships. This is a genuinely new and significant reference book and is destined to become a major new aid for Royal Navy warship and auxiliary identification.
