Book excerpt: In an effort to reduce the unwanted effects of friction, ion implantation of bracket models was accomplished and tested against the four major orthodontic alloy groups, stainless steel (S.S.), cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr), nickel-titanium (NiTi), and beta-titanium. Stainless steel right-hand cylinders simulated orthodontic brackets. In addition to control samples, the polished faces of these cylinders were implanted with N+, Ti+/N+, N+/C+, N+/Cr+, Ti+, Ti+/C+, and C+. Frictional forces were measured, and both the coefficient of static friction, mu(s), and the coefficient of kinetic (sliding) friction, mu(k), were determined while varying the normal forces from 0.2 to 1kg.
