Book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices

Download or read book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 1019 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Magnetic recording is presently a $50 billion industry. It spans audio, video, and digi tal applications in the form of tapes and disks. The industry is expected to grow by a factor of five or more in the next decade. This growth will be accompanied by dramatic improvements in the technology, and the potential exists for magnetic-recording den sities to improve by at least one order of magnitude! Magnetic-recording process is accomplished by relative motion between a mag netic head and a magnetic medium. Types of magnetic media for digital recording are: flexible media (tapes and floppy disks) and rigid disks. Physical contact between head and medium occurs during starts and stops and hydrodynamic air film develops at high speeds. Hying heights (mean separation between head and medium) are on the order of 0. 1 micrometer comparable to surface roughness of the mating members. Need for higher and higher recording densities requires that surfaces be as smooth as possible and flying heights be as low as possible. Smoother surfaces lead to increased static/ kinetic friction and wear. In the case of magnetic tapes, in order to have high bit capac ity for a given size of a spool, we like to use as thin a tape substrate as possible. Thinner tapes are prone to local or bulk viscoelastic deformation during storage. This may lead to variations in head-tape separations resulting in problems in data reliability.

Book Friction Wear and Interfacial Chemistry in Thin Film Magnetic Rigid Disk Files

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present results of a study of hemispherical pins of manganese-zinc ferrite sliding against rigid disks composed of thin films of a sputtered cobalt-nickel-platinum alloy and carbon, with perfluoropolyether as the topical lubricant. The contact life, as marked by the total distance slid to the point at which the coefficient of friction increases rapidly over the steady state value, is much longer in air with 50 percent relative humidity than in dry air or vacuum. The wear debris generated in humid air is much finer and is enriched with cobalt on its surface. In dry air and vacuum, the debris is substantially larger than one micron and tends to be enriched with nickel on its surface. We present a hypothesis which explains the wear mechanisms in various operating environments.

Book Atomic Scale Friction Measurements Using Friction Force Microscopy Part II Application to Magnetic Media

Download or read book Atomic Scale Friction Measurements Using Friction Force Microscopy Part II Application to Magnetic Media written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Force/Friction Force Microscopes (AFM/FFM) were used to study tribological properties of metal-particle tapes with two roughnesses, Co gamma Fe2O3 tapes (unwiped and wiped), and unlubricated and lubricated thin-film magnetic rigid disks (as-polished and standard textured). Nanoindentation studies showed that the hardness of the tapes through the magnetic coating is not uniform. These results are consistent with the fact that the tape surface is a composite and is not homogeneous. Nanoscratch experiments performed on magnetic tapes using silicon nitride tips revealed that deformation and displacement of tape surface material occurred after one pass under light loads approx. 100 nN). A comparison between friction force profiles and the corresponding surface roughness profiles of all samples tested shows a poor correlation between localized values of friction and surface roughness.

A comparison between friction force profiles and the corresponding surface roughness profiles of all samples tested shows a poor correlation between localized values of friction and surface roughness. Detailed studies of friction and surface profiles demonstrate an excellent correlation between localized variation of the slope of the surface roughness along the sliding direction and the localized variation of friction. Atomic-scale friction in magnetic media and natural diamond appears to be due to adhesive and ratchet (roughness) mechanisms. Directionality in the local variation of atomic-scale friction data was observed as the samples were scanned in either direction, resulting from the scanning direction and the anisotropy in the surface topography. Atomic-scale coefficient of friction is generally found to be smaller than the macro coefficient of friction as there may be less ploughing contribution in atomic-scale measurements.
