Book The French Renaissance in England

Download or read book The French Renaissance in England written by Sidney Lee and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The French Renaissance in England: An Account of the Literary Relations of England and France in the Sixteenth Century This volume is based on a series of six lectures which I delivered, under the title of 'The Literary Relations of England and France during the Sixteenth Century', before the University of Oxford during the summer term of 1909. My thanks are due to the Delegates of the Common University Fund, on whose invitation the lectures were undertaken. In the course of preparation for the press, the lectures have been largely rewritten and expanded. The change in the main title is justified not merely by considerations of brevity, but also by the fact that the French Renaissance was known in England almost exclusively through its written word, and only slightly and subsidiarily through its art. Although I have not attempted to deal exhaustively with all the aspects of the theme, I hope that I have succeeded in bringing home to my readers not merely the extent of the debt which English literature, thought, and scholarship of the Tudor epoch owes to the French Renaissance, but also the interest attaching to that comparative study of European literature, on which I have sought to lift a corner of the curtain. It is as a tentative contribution to a comparative study of literature that I wish the work mainly to be judged. That study has been pursued in this country on a smaller scale and less systematically than abroad. Yet the comparative study of literature is to my thinking a needful complement of those philological and aesthetic studies which chiefly occupy the attention of English scholars. The serious student of literature can never safely ignore the suggestive phrases of Walter Pater: 'Producers of great literature do not live in isolation, but catch light and heat from each other's thought. A people without intellectual commerce with other peoples has never done anything conspicuous in literature.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mediæval France: From the Reign of Hugues Capet to the Beginning of the Sixteenth Century The story of a nation, we conceive, is read, not only in its political annals, in the records Of the battle-field, and the details Of treaties Of peace; but in its social life, in the development of commerce, industry, literature, and the fine arts. Accordingly, whilst attempting throughout the following pages to give the history Of Medieval France, we have allowed a large share to what may be called the intellectual side Of the subject, more especially to the formation and progress of national literature. Without pre tending to exhaust the topic, we have illustrated it by extracts from several authors accompanied, whenever necessary, by a translation in English. The reader will thus be able to follow at the same time the development Of the language; and the glossary at the end of the volume will help him to understand the archaisms used in the original passages quoted in the text. Book History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century Vol 4 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century, Vol. 4 When a foreigner visits certain countries, as England, Scotland, or America, he is sometimes presented with the rights of citizenship. Such has been the privilege of the "History of the Reformation of the Sixteenth Century." From 150,000 to 200,000 copies are in circulation, in the English language, in the countries I have just mentioned; while in France the number hardly exceeds 4000. This is a real adoption, - naturalizing my Work in the countries that have received it with so much favour. I accept this honour. Accordingly, while the former Volumes of my History were originally published in France; now that, after a lapse of five years, I think of issuing a continuation of it, I do so in Great Britain. This is not the only change in the mode of publication. I did not think it right to leave to translators, as in the case of the former Volumes, the task of expressing my ideas in English. The best translations are always faulty; and the Author alone can have the certainty of conveying his idea, his whole idea, and nothing but his idea. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformation, Vol. 3: In the Sixteenth Century Herein, too, is a great lesson for France, with which the author feels himself so intimately connected through his forefathers. Should France, like her different governments, incline anew to the papacy, our belief is, that it will prove the signal of great disasters. Every one who attaches himself to the papacy will be compromised in its downfall. France has her only prospect of strength and greatness in turning towards the gospel. May this great truth be understood by rulers and people! About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
