Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Trade in Sugar: A Reply to Sir Thomas Reply Select Committee but for the vigilance Of the Chairman, is now reproduced without hesitation. The letters here reprinted from the Times are a complete answer to the position taken up by Sir Thomas Farrer, both on the question Of the price Of sugar and on the larger question Of Free Trade. He has taken no notice Of the main facts and arguments contained in my letters but he does not hesitate to reproduce the assertions which I have refuted, and even amplifies them to double their original length. When his book was announced, it was naturally supposed that he would direct his attention, in the first instance, to dealing with Our published replies. Though there is plenty Of fresh matter in his book, there is not a single allusion to my arguments. The fresh matter merely repeats, in various forms, the Old assertions which I am fairly entitled to consider that I have refuted, until Sir Thomas Farrer shows that I have failed to do so. Hitherto he has not made even an attempt in that direction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement Classic Reprint written by W. Cunningham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rise and Decline of the Free Trade Movement The story of the rise and decline of the Free Trade movement has a practical bearing which renders it a matter of general interest at the present time; but it has also a special attraction for students of political phenomena. The agitation may be said to have been unique, for it had its basis in a scientific doctrine. The history of all ages of the world has shewn the play of human aspirations and passions, of racial an tipathies and moral ideals; but it was left for the eighteenth century to make a great advance in formu lating the knowledge of human society and of the conditions of its prosperity. The Free Trade move ment as a political force owed its strength to the fact that it had a scientific character: this seems also to account for its limitations and defects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mr. Hurd's Free Trade Resolution Polk, Dallas, and the tariff of its first great congressionalwork was to supplant the protective tariff of 1842 by Robert J. Walker's revenue tariff, now known as the tariff of 1846, which went into effect in 1847. The decade which followed that year was a memorable one. It gave us the gold of California, of which, in less than ten years, we mined It was during that decade that we gave Europe the first intimation of our ability to supply whatever deficiency in food might occur throughout the world. The potato rot decimated Ireland, affected the other British Islands, and spread to the Conti nent of Europe, and we exported in one year the then unprecedented amount of sixty-eight million dollars' worth of grain. The gold of California and the famine which prostrated the Irish people swelled the tide of immigration to unwonted numbers, and yet our people were not prosperous. We imported and consumed immense quanti ties of foreign goods, and as the quantity of these increased the demand for the labor of American workmen diminished. We imported coal for use in manufactories and the propulsion of locomotives. We imported rails to lay over our coal-fields and iron-beds. Wages fell to rates as low as they had been in 1820 and 1821, or in 1840 and 1841. The of California gold had fled from us as from a pestilence. We had nothing to show for our unusual exports of grain and provisions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Case Against Free Trade Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Case Against Free Trade Classic Reprint written by W. Cunningham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-16 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Case Against Free Trade It is a commonplace of political study that the territorial expansion of the Empire was in the main a haphazard affair. British Governments, in spite of the perhaps not unnatural suspicions of foreign powers, have pursued no settled or reasoned policy of expansion. More often than not, when pro claiming an annexation or a protectorate, they have been the unwilling agents of forces stronger than themselves. Again and again they have surrendered what British soldiers have conquered again and again they have refused to take what British explorers have offered. But the genius of the race has brooked no denial, and in spite of definite refusals or reluctant acquiescence on the part of its rulers, the Empire has grown to be the vast accumulation of dominions and dependencies whose representatives are now assembled in London for the coronation of the Sovereign. Book The American Lesson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Lesson: The Free Trade Struggle in England To keep this book abreast of the debate, I have revised it, and have given some additional facts bearing on the lesson to Americans which is given them in the study of the Free Trade Struggle in England. Had the English arguments for Protection been preserved in Mr. Edison's phonograph, the unwinding of the machine would not have more faithfully reproduced them than they have been reproduced by the American protectionists in the debates in Congress - except ing this one, the foreigner pays the tax. In all the debates in Parliament between 1841 and 1846, I cannot find it of record that any member was foolish enough to think that, or daring enough to say it. M. M. Trumbull. Download or read book Free Trade and English Classic Reprint written by Augustus Mongredien and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Trade and English IT is intended in the following pages to take a short review of the present position of the free trade question in respect to the world at large, and especially in respect to the com merce of England. Such an inquiry might be useful, and perhaps interesting, at any time, but now, when commerce is abnormally depressed, and when it is a moot point how far that depression is connected with our free-trade policy, it becomes an important and urgent one. It is proposed, in the first part, to show the bearings of free trade on the commerce and industry of nations gene rally; and in the second to examine into the real causes of the present condition of English commerce, and ascertain to what extent, if any, it may be ascribable to the operation of free trade.
