Book Fred and Ethel Noyes of Smithville New Jersey

Download or read book Fred and Ethel Noyes of Smithville New Jersey written by Judy Courter and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-16 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of visitors each year flock to the Historic Smithville Inn and Village to enjoy restaurants, shops and festivals. The story behind Smithville--the remarkable efforts of its founders, Fred and Ethel Noyes--is as colorful as the village itself. Fred was a World War II veteran and artist with a rambunctious personality. Ethel was an unstoppable visionary and self-made businesswoman. Together, they restored the Smithville Inn and, over the years, added the historic village. Ethel ran the enterprise with a notoriously tight grip, while the garrulous Fred painted, collected decoys and was the mainstay. They went on to build the Ram's Head Inn and the Noyes Museum of Art. Fred and Ethel left a lasting legacy for the people of New Jersey. Author Judy Courter tells the story of this fascinating couple through the memories of family, friends and employees.

Book New Jersey s Covered Bridges

Download or read book New Jersey s Covered Bridges written by Richard J. Garlipp Jr. and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th and 19th centuries, covered bridges dotted the landscape of New Jersey, providing safe passage to travelers. Forty-five covered bridges once crossed waterways in all corners of the state. Perhaps the most extraordinary examples of these wooden bridges were found along the western border, crossing the Delaware River into neighboring Pennsylvania. These bridges were feats of construction and engineering but were ultimately unable to prevent the inevitable fate of almost all the covered bridges of the state, namely ice, floods, and fire as well as the development of new materials and technology. Today, only one covered bridge survives in New Jersey. The Green Sergeant's covered bridge in Hunterdon County was constructed over the Wickecheoke Creek in 1872 and has stood the test of time. New Jersey's Covered Bridges showcases the rich transportation history of these structures and pictorially honors the lost ones.

All one hundred-plus Shore towns are included, from Sandy Hook to Cape May. There are hundreds of restaurant listings and recommendations. The book also contains engaging profiles and vignettes of the people and places that give the Shore its special character and charm. A throwback five-and-dime store on Long Beach Island. Banner pilots. Birders. Baby parades. And more. You want lists and rankings? The book is full of them—twenty best Shore towns, twenty-one secret spots down the Shore, twenty essential Jersey Shore experiences, fifty things we bet you didn’t know about the Shore, and so on. The book is the next best thing to being at the Shore; actually, it may be better than being there (think of those epic traffic jams on the Parkway, and all the money you’ll save on tolls, beach fees, and bad boardwalk pizza).
