Book excerpt: Excerpt from Song Leaves: From the Book of Life and Nature Though Poetry may be classed among the elegancies of Literature, and be looked upon more as an ornamental appendage to the library and drawing-room than as a source of amusement or instruction, it has its mission upon earth as well as writings in prose. And that mission is to speak unto the hearts of men. To place itself on the side of Virtue and Truth; and, by its pictures of Life and Nature, graced, as the artist may be able, with the drapery of Romance, or the colors of Fancy, draw mankind closer together in bonds of sympathy and fellowship. And, while cultivating a taste for the Beautiful in Art and Nature, raise in the breast a desire to extend those earthly blessings which Providence has showered upon them to their less fortunate brethren. There have been occasions when a simple song has effected more than volumes of prose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Songs and Ballads Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs and Ballads Classic Reprint written by Fanny Raymond-Ritter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs and Ballads Rather less than half the songs and ballads in the accompanying collection have already appeared in English and American periodicals and as some among these have been several times illustrated by composers, while to a few the compliment of translation has been accorded, their re-appearance here may not prove unwelcome to their former readers. Others now appear in print for the first time. Part of the transcriptions might be more truly termed free fan tasias (in musical parlance) on fragments, broken verses, of partially lost folk-songs; others, to which the authors' names are appended, are as true to their originals as befits translations that rather aim at preserving the spirit than the letter. With the exception of one or two of which I have seen English prose versions, and the Servian song, which Lord Lytton had already translated, these appear, I believe, for the first time in our language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Now for the First Time Collected Tennyson's long life of eighty-four years almost equalled in its duration the combined lives of Keats, Shelley, and Byron. Unlike these impassioned boys, who passed their lives at issue with their generation, Tennyson was born into a happier time, eagerly expecting its great poet and anxious with welcome. He was protected all his days from criticism and annoyance by a phalanx of friendly admirers, who preached him in every direction and encouraged him with their applause. No "wood notes wild" came from him; the gems in his poetry are pretty or beautiful or now and again perfect - but all owing such perfection as they possess more to art than to nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gathered Fragments: Easter, Xmas, and Other Poems This collection of verses is literally what its name implies Gathered Fragments - of the work of one, all of whose work was wrought out of suffering, and yet whose pen, now laid aside, contributed with humour, tenderness and pathos to what Ruskin calls the greatest of sciences, Humanity. Most of the poems have never been in print. Many, especially those of a serious character, were suggested by the individual experiences of her friends. All of them will have for those who knew her the charm of her own personality but, above all, they bear the impress of a character purified, strengthened and exalted by crucial discipline of a faith brave and unshaken, Though He slay me. Book Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago

Download or read book Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago written by T. A. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lovers Three Thousand Years Ago: As Indicated by the Song of Solomon The author of this little book does not claim to have just discovered that the Song of Solomon is a love-story in verse. That was suggested by Bible-scholars many years ago, and it has been very generally accepted by the scholarship of to-day. But in all the literature upon the subject, whether in the form of monographs, or of articles in magazines, or reviews, or encyclopaedias, there is not found a single presentation of it in a form which would allow it to be read in its real character. These discussions are all in the form of critical expositions of the text, so that in most of them the text appears only in fragments. The plan of this book is to eliminate all textual criticism and to restore the text to the form which made the poem a treasure with the ancient Hebrews, and which, when thus read, will make it as dear to every true lover to-day as it was when first read and recited three thousand years ago. Book Original Songs Classic Reprint

Download or read book Original Songs Classic Reprint written by Robert Gilfillan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Original Songs That the obtrusion on the public of this little Volume of Songs will be deemed an act of temerity, I am prepared to expect; and I am also prepared, if I am not much mistaken, to bear, with all patience and humility, the animadversions to which that temerity may subject me; perfectly satisfied as I am that, in general, every justice will be done me, and that if my humble efforts at Song possess any merit, that merit will be readily acknowledged. If, on the contrary, they are found wanting, I shall, I trust, derive a lesson from the issue, which will be useful to me hereafter: thus I conceive that, in either event, I shall not be altogether a loser. It is customary, I believe, with aspirants in poetry to apologize for the intrusion of their lucubrations on the public, - "Obliged by hunger, or request of friends." For myself, I have neither of these apologies to offer, nor any other, I fear, that would be considered satisfactory. Book Songs for Little People Classic Reprint

Download or read book Songs for Little People Classic Reprint written by Norman Gale and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs for Little People This book is designed for a position between such extremes as the frankly babyish song books and Stevenson's exquisite and ever lasting memorials of a child by no means typical. Considering the audience approached, it must be admitted that a few rather difficult words have been allowed entry into the verses but these have not come by chance, for the author has endeavoured to attract children up to the ages of fourteen and fifteen, as well as those requiring, because of their tenderer years, poems of the simplest sort. Mothers and grown-up sisters or aunts will, it is hoped, translate and explain whenever a young reader. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Songs from the Classics Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Grindrod and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Songs From the Classics In the Greek myths there is often a shadowy meaning hidden under the plain story. I have endeavoured to follow Greek art in this, and, where I thought that I had caught the meaning, have not sought to point it too strongly, but have left the reader to find it for himself. I have not ventured to depart from the original myths save now and then in small details which seem to fill a blank or to add a point; as the web of Pallas in Arachne, or the latter's choice of her own work as a rope or, in The Song of Sappho, the dramatic justice dealt to Phaon; or (in my former book) the return of her body to Echo when the stillness of night gave a respite to her toil. Book Archaic and Classical Choral Song

Download or read book Archaic and Classical Choral Song written by Lucia Athanassaki and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2011-07-27 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the many interlocking problems in understanding the modes of performance, dissemination, and transmission of Greek poetry of the seventh to the fifth centuries BC whose first performers were a choral group, sometimes singing in a ritual context, sometimes in more secular celebrations of victories in competitive games. It explores the different ways such a group presented itself and was perceived by its audiences; the place of tyrants, of other prominent individuals and of communities in commissioning and funding choral performances and in securing the further circulation of the songs' texts and music; the social and political role of choral songs and the extent to which such songs continued to be performed both inside and outside the immediate family and polis-community, whether chorally or in archaic Greece's important cultural engine, the elite male symposium, with the consequence that Athenian theatre audiences could be expected to appreciate allusion to or reworking of such poetic forms in tragedy and comedy; and how various types of performance contributed to transmission of written texts of the poems until they were collected and edited by Alexandrian scholars in the third and second centuries BC.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Song of the Guns These are our masters, the slim Grim muzzles that irk in the pit; That cha'fe for the rushing of wheels, For the teams plunging madly to bit As the gunners Wing down to unkey, For the trails sweeping half-circle-right, For the six breech-blocks clashing as one To a target viewed clear on the sight Gray masses the shells search and tear Into fragments that bunch as they run For the hour of the red battle-harvest, The dream of the slaves of the gun! Download or read book A Book of Cambridge Verse Classic Reprint written by Ernest Edward Kellett and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold.
