Book Shattered Sun

Download or read book Shattered Sun written by John Gillette and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine hundred years ago, the Sun exploded. It shattered into millions of pieces, which swirled about the cosmos and eventually plummeted into the earth. On that day, the world was plunged into an eternal twilight. Without the Sun, life became dependent on its fractured remains, the Sun Shards, for survival. They instantly became the most precious resources on the face of the earth. If you had one, you had light, heat, and the ability to grow food. If you didn't, you died a cold, lonely death. Here's the funny thing though: Life goes on. People adapt, banners change, and the world keeps spinning. In this new age there is no day and no night; just a never-ending twilight. The world is still a place of gods and monsters, but now without the sun overhead these horrors have moved into the cities and alleyways to prey at all hours of the day. This world still needs heroes, someone to bring a light into the dark places and to make sure the boogeyman stays in his closet. Do you have what it takes to shine?

Book Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Microanalysis

Download or read book Scanning Electron Microscopy and X Ray Microanalysis written by Joseph I. Goldstein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thoroughly revised and updated Fourth Edition of a time-honored text provides the reader with a comprehensive introduction to the field of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS) for elemental microanalysis, electron backscatter diffraction analysis (EBSD) for micro-crystallography, and focused ion beams. Students and academic researchers will find the text to be an authoritative and scholarly resource, while SEM operators and a diversity of practitioners — engineers, technicians, physical and biological scientists, clinicians, and technical managers — will find that every chapter has been overhauled to meet the more practical needs of the technologist and working professional. In a break with the past, this Fourth Edition de-emphasizes the design and physical operating basis of the instrumentation, including the electron sources, lenses, detectors, etc. In the modern SEM, many of the low level instrument parameters are now controlled and optimized by the microscope’s software, and user access is restricted. Although the software control system provides efficient and reproducible microscopy and microanalysis, the user must understand the parameter space wherein choices are made to achieve effective and meaningful microscopy, microanalysis, and micro-crystallography. Therefore, special emphasis is placed on beam energy, beam current, electron detector characteristics and controls, and ancillary techniques such as energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS) and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). With 13 years between the publication of the third and fourth editions, new coverage reflects the many improvements in the instrument and analysis techniques. The SEM has evolved into a powerful and versatile characterization platform in which morphology, elemental composition, and crystal structure can be evaluated simultaneously. Extension of the SEM into a "dual beam" platform incorporating both electron and ion columns allows precision modification of the specimen by focused ion beam milling. New coverage in the Fourth Edition includes the increasing use of field emission guns and SEM instruments with high resolution capabilities, variable pressure SEM operation, theory, and measurement of x-rays with high throughput silicon drift detector (SDD-EDS) x-ray spectrometers. In addition to powerful vendor- supplied software to support data collection and processing, the microscopist can access advanced capabilities available in free, open source software platforms, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) ImageJ-Fiji for image processing and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) DTSA II for quantitative EDS x-ray microanalysis and spectral simulation, both of which are extensively used in this work. However, the user has a responsibility to bring intellect, curiosity, and a proper skepticism to information on a computer screen and to the entire measurement process. This book helps you to achieve this goal. Realigns the text with the needs of a diverse audience from researchers and graduate students to SEM operators and technical managers Emphasizes practical, hands-on operation of the microscope, particularly user selection of the critical operating parameters to achieve meaningful results Provides step-by-step overviews of SEM, EDS, and EBSD and checklists of critical issues for SEM imaging, EDS x-ray microanalysis, and EBSD crystallographic measurements Makes extensive use of open source software: NIH ImageJ-FIJI for image processing and NIST DTSA II for quantitative EDS x-ray microanalysis and EDS spectral simulation. Includes case studies to illustrate practical problem solving Covers Helium ion scanning microscopy Organized into relatively self-contained modules – no need to "read it all" to understand a topic Includes an online supplement—an extensive "Database of Electron–Solid Interactions"—which can be accessed on SpringerLink, in Chapter 3

Book excerpt: The Rebirth of Energy Security in America For the first time in decades, the US has a rare opportunity to realistically reject oil supplies from other nations. It’s a goal that has eluded us through eight presidencies. But recent advances in hydraulic fracturing (or fracking) technology have catapulted the US into its current position as the world’s #1 oil producer, surpassing energy powerhouses like Saudi Arabia. In The Switch, Dan K. Eberhart addresses a fascinating question: What would happen if the US became energy self-sufficient? • Would the Middle East look to China as its new ally and energy buyer? • Would petrostates find new markets or would their governments collapse as their oil revenues take a free fall? • Would the US lift the crude oil export ban and help friendly nations such as Ukraine free themselves from the yoke of Russian oil? • Would the US use its newfound energy wealth to become more isolationist and remove itself from the position of “global police force?” To answer these questions—and to explore the complex relationship between the US and foreign oil producers—Eberhart uses a combination of firsthand interviews, vignettes, and reporting. The result is a clear and engaging analysis of where America’s energy is coming from, where it could go, and how US energy is fundamentally shifting geopolitics and the domestic economy.

Book William Faulkner Letters Fictions

Download or read book William Faulkner Letters Fictions written by James G. Watson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-09-10 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Besides the groundbreaking novels and stories that brought him fame, William Faulkner throughout his life wrote letters—to his publisher, his lovers, his family, and his friends. In this first major study of epistolarity in Faulkner's work, James G. Watson examines Faulkner's personal correspondence as a unique second canon of writing, separate from his literary canon with its many fictional letters but developing along parallel lines. By describing the similarity of forms and conventions in Faulkner's personal and fictional correspondence, Watson clearly demonstrates that Faulkner's personal experience as a writer of letters significantly shaped his imaginative work early and late. Letters are always about themselves; they re-create a world between the sender and the receiver. In this illuminating study, Faulkner's personal letters are treated as a form of reflexive writing: first-person narratives in which Sender self-consciously portrays Self to a specific Receiver, likewise portrayed in the letter-text. This duality of actual experience and imaginative re-creation measures the personal distances between the life of the writer and the written self-image. It reveals that letters are at once fragments of autobiography and fictions of self. Such "laws of letters" apply equally to the letters that appear throughout Faulkner's novels and stories. The twenty-one letters and telegrams in The Sound and the Fury, for example, portray character, propel plot, and convey important themes of failed communication and broken identity. From Soldiers' Pay to his last work, Faulkner's carefully lettered canon of fiction is dramatic evidence of his understanding of epistolarity and of the extent to which he adapted letters, including some of his own, to shape his fictional world.
