Book excerpt: Stories 4 Women, a collection of true short stories about the fairer sex, was created on an understanding that there is an unspoken solidarity that bonds us as women. However, we four writers felt it appropriate to give a voice to some of the stories unique to the womans experience, including the ones that seldom are discussed in the open. They range from the somber situations of being the victims of sexual assault and the death of a loved one, to the more whimsical reminiscences about our teenage crushes and childhood tendencies. Think back to how you felt when you started doing things for yourself or when that guy who you thought was the one broke your heart. Remember when you took that long walk down the aisle and into your new life, or when you discovered that first stray gray hair sprouting from your head? These short stories go to show that regardless of age, race, political and religious affiliations, and background, we can all relate to the issues of womanhood. Stories 4 Women also shares insights into what enduring these experiences has molded us into: We are thoughtful, seasoned, refreshed, independent, accomplished, nostalgic, forgiving and self-assured women. These are our stories. These are your stories. These are stories for women.

Book excerpt: The Bible is one of our best sources of history, especially when it comes to morality and civility. The Bible has story after story and gives many parables referring to the reason for the downfall of men and woman. This degradation obviously creates problems not only in families and organizations. But in society. The basis for the problems can best be classified as spirits which seems to be contrary to a homogeneous or peaceful relationship.

Book Social Policy and the Labour Market

Download or read book Social Policy and the Labour Market written by Philip R. de Jong and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-23 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines why, while mature welfare states are being trimmed and privatised, new social welfare arrangement are implemented in formerly communist and newly industrialised countries. The papers in this volume bring together these different worlds, but also different academic approaches. Micro-economic analyses of social insurance and welfare systems are joined with broader political descriptions of social policy in such disparate regions as Scandinavia, China, Italy, Poland and South Africa. They give the reader a sense of the fundamental problem of finding a social welfare system that fits specific economic and cultural conditions. This volume is the second in a series on international studies of issues in social security. The series is initiated by the Foundation for International Studies on Social Security (FISS). One of its aims is to confront different academic approaches with each other, and with public policy perspectives. Another is to give analytic reports of cross-nationally different approaches to the design and reform of welfare state programs. The present and next volume form a twin set in the sense that they both are based on selections from papers presented at seminars held by FISS in 1994-1996.

Book Gender Challenges

Download or read book Gender Challenges written by Bina Agarwal and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 1248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An internationally acclaimed economist, Bina Agarwal is known for her path-breaking writings on agriculture, property rights, and the environment. Her three-volume compendium brings together a selection of her essays, written over three decades. Combining diverse disciplines, methodologies, and cross-country comparisons, the essays challenge standard economic analyses and assumptions from a gender perspective. They provide original insights on a wide range of theoretical, empirical, and policy issues of continuing importance in contemporary debates. The first volume spans varied dimensions of the author’s writings on agrarian change, from 1981 to the present. It identifies gender inequalities in the impact of agricultural modernisation and technical change across Asia and Africa; the links between women, poverty, and economic growth processes; and data biases in measuring women’s work. It traces the gendered costs of droughts and famine, and challenges top-down methods of innovation diffusion. Focusing on the key role of women farmers in food security, it also offers innovative solutions, including public land banks and group farming. The second volume focuses on the author’s paradigm-shifting work on women’s property status in South Asia. Challenging conventional approaches to women’s empowerment, it demonstrates how promoting access to property, especially land, is key to enhancing women’s economic and social well-being and deterring domestic violence. It details gender inequalities in inheritance laws, public policies, and land struggles, and presents the bargaining framework for understanding and finding ways of overcoming these inequalities, both within families and in markets, communities, and vis-à-vis the state. This third volume traces the relationship between gender and environmental change. Critiquing ecofeminist assumptions, it presents an alternative theoretical framework. It also examines the causes of women’s absence as well as the impact of their presence in environmental collective action. Based on innovative fieldwork on community institutions for forest governance, the author demonstrates how a critical mass of women can significantly improve conservation outcomes. In conclusion, she reflects on which features of feminist scholarship make for an effective challenge to mainstream economics.

Book Population Reconstruction

Download or read book Population Reconstruction written by Gerrit Bloothooft and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-22 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems that are encountered, and solutions that have been proposed, when we aim to identify people and to reconstruct populations under conditions where information is scarce, ambiguous, fuzzy and sometimes erroneous. The process from handwritten registers to a reconstructed digitized population consists of three major phases, reflected in the three main sections of this book. The first phase involves transcribing and digitizing the data while structuring the information in a meaningful and efficient way. In the second phase, records that refer to the same person or group of persons are identified by a process of linkage. In the third and final phase, the information on an individual is combined into a reconstruction of their life course. The studies and examples in this book originate from a range of countries, each with its own cultural and administrative characteristics, and from medieval charters through historical censuses and vital registration, to the modern issue of privacy preservation. Despite the diverse places and times addressed, they all share the study of fundamental issues when it comes to model reasoning for population reconstruction and the possibilities and limitations of information technology to support this process. It is thus not a single discipline that is involved in such an endeavor. Historians, social scientists, and linguists represent the humanities through their knowledge of the complexity of the past, the limitations of sources, and the possible interpretations of information. The availability of big data from digitized archives and the need for complex analyses to identify individuals calls for the involvement of computer scientists. With contributions from all these fields, often in direct cooperation, this book is at the heart of the digital humanities, and will hopefully offer a source of inspiration for future investigations.
