He plays by his own rules, and he plays to win. At twenty-four, he's on top of the world, basking in his bachelorhood one debaucherous night at a time, when an early morning knock on his door changes everything. He's a daddy. He has a daughter. And he's never changed a diaper in his life. But just when he's getting a grip on this whole fatherhood thing, he meets Calypso, the intriguing lavender-and-patchouli-scented hippie in the apartment next door. She refuses to discuss her past, but Crew didn't win a dozen high stakes poker tournaments without learning a thing or two about reading people. She's hiding something. But Calypso's not just a mystery, she's the ultimate jackpot. And Crew's bet money before but never happiness. If he wants her, he'll have to take the biggest gamble of his life. But having her for his own would be the ultimate win.

Book The Little Green Frog

Download or read book The Little Green Frog written by Beth Coombe Harris and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2013-05-02 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charming and pretty Biddy Forrester lives in China with her parents, medical missionaries who bring healing to the bodies and souls of the Chinese. Because of the poor climate condition, Biddy has to leave China and return to England with only one Friend, the Lord Jesus, and with a little green frog, her most valuable and cherished possession. Biddy knows the meaning of a surrendered life—and lives it! She wants always to please God, to trust Him, to walk with Him, to give Him her all. She brings warmth and light to a cold, dark England, witnessing, with her childish simplicity, everywhere she goes. In simple faith she asks God for the money for a hospital which her father needs in China. Then she puts her faith to work, giving her all to the Lord, even her little green frog. Her radiant testimony wins many hearts to Jesus, and brings in all the money needed for the hospital. The Little Green Frog displays the power of prayer, and the price and purpose of true Christianity. A wonderfully wholesome book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revealing compilation of essays documenting the effects of the Civil War and its aftermath on Americans—young and old, black and white, northern and southern. Civil War America: Voices from the Homefront describes the myriad ways in which the Civil War affected both Northern and Southern civilians. A unique collection of essays that include diary entries, memoirs, letters, and magazine articles chronicle the personal experiences of soldiers and slaves, parents and children, nurses, veterans, and writers. Exploring such wide-ranging topics as sanitary fairs in the North, illustrated weeklies, children playing soldier, and the care of postwar orphans, most stories communicate some element of change, such as the destruction of old racial relationships, the challenge to Southern whites' complacency, and the expansion of government power. Although some of the subjects are well known—Edmund Ruffin, Louisa May Alcott, Henry Cabot Lodge, Booker T. Washington—most of the witnesses presented in these essays are relatively unknown men, women, and children who help to broaden our understanding of the war and its effects far beyond the front lines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Lost Lady is a novel by American author Willa Cather, first published in 1923. It centers on Marian Forrester, her husband Captain Daniel Forrester, and their lives in the small western town of Sweet Water, along the Transcontinental Railroad. However, it is mostly told from the perspective of a young man named Niel Herbert, as he observes the decline of both Marian and the West itself, as it shifts from a place of pioneering spirit to one of corporate exploitation. Exploring themes of social class, money, and the march of progress, A Lost Lady was praised for its vivid use of symbolism and setting, and is considered to be a major influence on the works of F. Scott Fitzgerald. It has been adapted to film twice, with a film adaptation being released in 1924, followed by a looser adaptation in 1934, starring Barbara Stanwyck. A Lost Lady begins in the small railroad town of Sweet Water, on the undeveloped Western plains. The most prominent family in the town is the Forresters, and Marian Forrester is known for her hospitality and kindness. The railroad executives frequently stop by her house and enjoy the food and comfort she offers while there on business. A young boy, Niel Herbert, frequently plays on the Forrester estate with his friend. One day, an older boy named Ivy Peters arrives, and shoots a woodpecker out of a tree. He then blinds the bird and laughs as it flies around helplessly. Niel pities the bird and tries to climb the tree to put it out of its misery, but while climbing he slips, and breaks his arm in the fall, as well as knocking himself unconscious. Ivy takes him to the Forrester house where Marian looks after him. When Niel wakes up, he's amazed by the nice house and how sweet Marian smells. He doesn't't see her much after that, but several years later he and his uncle, Judge Pommeroy, are invited to the Forrester house for dinner. There he meets Ellinger, who he will later learn is Mrs. Forrester's lover, and Constance, a young girl his age.
