Book excerpt: Nathan Bedford Forrest has to be considered one of the most remarkable men of the War Between the States. Although completely untutored in the art and science of war, his aggressive use of rapid movement and concentration of force during his raids have become legendary. The campaigns he led into Union occupied territory anticipated the mobile operations that have become the hallmark of modern land warfare. He achieved these feats of arms through his use of horse soldiers as mounted infantry, thus combining the mobility of cavalry with the hitting power of the foot soldier. This amalgamation of force and rapidity of movement was the key to his great victory on the 10th of June, 1864 at the Battle of Brice's Cross-Roads. This action in north-east Mississippi, also known as Tishomingo Creek by Southerners and Guntown by Yankees, resulted in Forrest's defeating in detail an 8,500 man Union column of cavalry, infantry and artillery, in effect destroyed a force nearly twice the size of his own command. In the following pages is found the testimony of the men who were there, those who fought, and survived that hot day in Mississippi. These are the words, thoughts and stories of the victors and the vanquished, attesting to their pride in triumph, along with excuses and recriminations from the defeated. As editor, I have recorded their testimonies without any alteration and only inserted a few footnotes to clarify some of the more obscure references made by the writers.

The fighting in Mississippi was overshadowed by Nathan Bedford Forrest’s more spectacular victory at Brice’s Crossroads a month earlier. Bearss performed the research and writing for the Department of the Interior in 1969, and only a handful of softcover copies were circulated. It is published here for the first time, with the assistance of award-winning author David A. Powell, as Outwitting Forrest: The Tupelo Campaign in Mississippi, June 22–July 23, 1864. The engagement came about when Maj. Gen. A. J. Smith marched a Federal expeditionary force (his XVI Army Corps) into northern Mississippi in early July 1864. The thrust forced a response, the largest of which was delivered by the combined Confederate cavalry of Stephen D. Lee (who was in general command) and Forrest. The tactical result was a Union defensive success. The larger Confederate strategic play, however—one that might have impacted the course of the war in the Western Theater—would have been to unleash Forrest on a raid into Middle Tennessee to destroy the single line of railroad track feeding and supplying the Union armies of William T. Sherman in his ongoing operations around Atlanta. Instead, his troopers were contained within the Magnolia State, where his combat effectiveness was severely curtailed. Editor Powell has left Bearss’s prose and notes intact, while adding additional sources and commentary of his own. The result is an exceptional study that has finally been made available to the general reading public as part of the Savas Beatie Battles & Leaders Series.

When a difficult, combative situation was under control, which with him it inevitably would be, his demeanor would lighten up, and Forrest’s humorous side would come out. He was also a master of the poker bluff and psychological warfare, and he played these to great advantage during the war. One of the best episodes of this was the 1863 week-long pursuit and surrender of an entire Federal brigade—over 1,700 men—to fewer than 600 of his own. The Union commander had seen the Confederates’ three cannons, but a Forrest ruse and bluff made it appear as fifteen cannons, to which the astonished Union man asked Forrest how many he had. Forrest replied, “I reckon that’s all that’s kept up.” This book is a trove of those factual and almost-factual happenings.
