Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report considers two central issues: whether Manitoba should adopt a class proceedings regime, and if so, what the defining features of that regime should be. After an introduction on the importance of class proceedings in improving access to justice, chapter 2 outlines the current Manitoba law on multi-party proceedings, provides a brief overview of class proceedings legislation in other jurisdictions, and describes the types of situations in which class proceedings have been used in those jurisdictions. Chapter 3 discusses reasons advanced for and against class proceedings, including access to justice, efficient use of judicial resources, windfalls for lawyers, and the effects on Manitobans of class proceedings in other jurisdictions. Chapter 4 proposes and discusses the features of a class proceedings regime, including general objectives, certification, class membership, costs and fees, and conduct of proceedings. The final chapter summarizes recommendations for reform and a proposed Class Proceedings Act is appended.

This book was released on 2022-03-03 with total page 903 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth volume of The Cambridge History of America and the World examines the heights of American global power in the mid-twentieth century and how challenges from at home and abroad altered the United States and its role in the world. The second half of the twentieth century marked the pinnacle of American global power in economic, political, and cultural terms, but even as it reached such heights, the United States quickly faced new challenges to its power, originating both domestically and internationally. Highlighting cutting-edge ideas from scholars from all over the world, this volume anatomizes American power as well as the counters and alternatives to 'the American empire.' Topics include US economic and military power, American culture overseas, human rights and humanitarianism, third-world internationalism, immigration, communications technology, and the Anthropocene.
Download or read book Women Law and Culture written by Jocelynne A. Scutt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-17 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores cultural constructs, societal demands and political and philosophical underpinnings that position women in the world. It illustrates the way culture controls women's place in the world and how cultural constraints are not limited to any one culture, country, ethnicity, race, class or status. Written by scholars from a wide range of specialists in law, sociology, anthropology, popular and cultural studies, history, communications, film and sex and gender, this study provides an authoritative take on different cultures, cultural demands and constraints, contradictions and requirements for conformity generating conflict. Women, Law and Culture is distinctive because it recognises that no particular culture singles out women for 'special' treatment, rules and requirements; rather, all do. Highlighting the way law and culture are intimately intertwined, impacting on women – whatever their country and social and economic status – this book will be of great interest to scholars of law, women’s and gender studies and media studies.

Download or read book Early Orientalism written by Ivan Kalmar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of western notions about Islam is of obvious scholarly as well as popular interest today. This book investigates Christian images of the Muslim Middle East, focusing on the period from the Renaissance to the Enlightenment, when the nature of divine as well as human power was under particularly intense debate in the West. Ivan Kalmar explores how the controversial notion of submission to ultimate authority has in the western world been discussed with reference to Islam’s alleged recommendation to obey, unquestioningly, a merciless Allah in heaven and a despotic government on earth. He discusses how Abrahamic faiths – Christianity and Judaism as much as Islam – demand devotion to a sublime power, with the faith that this power loves and cares for us, a concept that brings with it the fear that, on the contrary, this power only toys with us for its own enjoyment. For such a power, Kalmar borrows Slavoj Zizek’s term "obscene father". He discusses how this describes exactly the western image of the Oriental despot - Allah in heaven, and the various sultans, emirs and ayatollahs on earth – and how these despotic personalities of imagined Muslim society function as a projection, from the West on to the Muslim Orient, of an existential anxiety about sublime power. Making accessible academic debates on the history of Christian perceptions of Islam and on Islam and the West, this book is an important addition to the existing literature in the areas of Islamic studies, religious history and philosophy.
Download or read book Worldwide Evil and Misery written by Robin Ruiter and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BANNED IN FRANCE This book is about the development of a New World Order that aims to suppress the whole of humanity. We are raised, by tradition, to trust our governments, and convinced that they care about us. This, however, is a big mistake. Below the surface of official politics lies a complicated social and intellectual process that is taking place. The world is governed by very different personages from what is imagined by those who are not behind the scenes. We are governed, our minds are molded, our tastes formed, our ideas-suggested, largely by men, that we have never heard of. In almost every act of our daily lives, whether in the sphere of politics or business, in our social conductor or our ethical thinking, we are dominated by the relatively small number of persons. Are the visible world leaders just mere puppets directed by an invisible power from behind the scenes? Are there invisible hands controlling the world? Is there a conspiracy? Who are the conspirators? We are dealing with the rise of a new geo-political supranational power on the world scene. This geo-political power consists of the richest families on this planet. Together with the most powerful multinationals they rule and control all countries and all coalitions. The true aim of this elite group is complete control of Planet Earth. They consist of a small elite group formed by the most influential and powerful, anonymous, very exclusive family dynasties that live dispersed over the world. They keep their power and money betwixt them by intermarriage. They operate behind the scenes of the most important enterprises, media and the financial institutions, but also behind the political scenes. Through connections, money and violence these powerful double-crossing families slipped in with one ultimate goal: the establishment of a One World dictatorship. Their target is to force a New World Order on the whole of mankind. They have bought an enormous part of the world with its economic power and placed it under its control. With the help of their unimaginable financial reserves they currently dispose of a worldwide financial control system with which they can control the entire world economy and political system. They determine how the leading politicians of this world have to act. Over time these influential families have extended the scope of their power over the whole world. Their web reaches all corners of the world. Their tentacles are woven with all facets of human existence. Their influence is unimaginable and it reaches all the leading institutions and organizations in the fields of politics, education, religion, finances and mass media. Science has also been infiltrated by them and is financially dependent on them and thus subject to manipulation (think of the Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Guggenheim foundation). The New World Order they are planning will be a World Dictatorship. Conservatives will call it Socialism or Communism. Liberals will call it Fascism. The label makes little difference; it will be the Gulag Archipelago on a worldwide basis. This book is a very unique publication and reading it will undoubtedly change the way you look at both history and the world today. It completely turns everything on its head. Once you read it, all of a sudden you will see the world around you in infrared. You soon see things which are simply not possible to view with the range of standard vision. The contents of this book is highly controversial and uncompromising. It describes a monster that we, in all our ignorance, have created together. It also serves to give us an idea of what's in store for the near future, so we can better prepare for what's coming our way. In 2006 the first French edition of this book was banned in France.
