Book Forest Plans of North America

Download or read book Forest Plans of North America written by Jacek P. Siry and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2015-03-13 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest Plans of North America presents case studies of contemporary forest management plans developed for forests owned by federal, state, county, and municipal governments, communities, families, individuals, industry, investment organizations, conservation organizations, and others in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The book provides excellent real-life examples of contemporary forest planning processes, the various methods used, and the diversity of objectives and constraints faced by forest owners. Chapters are written by those who have developed the plans, with each contribution following a unified format and allowing a common, clear presentation of the material, along with consistent treatment of various aspects of the plans. This work complements other books published by members of the same editorial team (Forest Management and Planning, Introduction to Forestry and Natural Resource Management), which describe the planning process and the various methods one might use to develop a plan, but in general do not, as this work does, illustrate what has specifically been developed by landowners and land managers. This is an in-depth compilation of case studies on the development of forest management plans by the different landowner groups in North America. The book offers students, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public an opportunity to greatly improve their appreciation of forest management and, more importantly, foster an understanding of why our forests today are what they are and what forces and tools may shape their tomorrow. Forest Plans of North America provides a solid supplement to those texts that are used as learning tools for forest management courses. In addition, the work functions as a reference for the types of processes used and issues addressed in the early 21st century for managing land resources. Presents 40-50 case studies of forest plans developed for a wide variety of organizations, groups, and landowners in North America Illustrates plans that have specifically been developed by landowners and land managers Features engaging, clearly written content that is accessible rather than highly technical, while demonstrating the issues and methods involved in the development of the plans Each chapter contains color photographs, maps, and figures

Book The U S Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest

Download or read book The U S Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest written by Gerald W. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Northwest has been at the forefront of forest management and research in the United States for more than one hundred years. In The U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest, Gerald Williams provides an historical overview of the part the Forest Service has played in managing the Northwest's forests. Emphasizing changes in management policy over the years, Williams discusses the establishment of the national forests in Oregon and Washington, grazing on public land, the Great Depression, World War II, and the rise of multiple-use management policies. He draws on extensive documentation of the post-war development boom to explore its effects on forests and Forest Service workers. Discussing such controversial issues as roadless areas and wilderness designation; timber harvesting; forest planning; ecosystems; and spotted owls, Williams demonstrates the impact of 1970s environmental laws on national forest management. The book is rich in photographs, many drawn from the Gerald W. Williams Collection, housed in University Archives at Oregon State University Libraries. Extensive appendices provide detailed data about Pacific Northwest forests. Chronicling a century of the agency's management of almost 25 million acres of national forests and grasslands for the people of the United States, The U.S. Forest Service in the Pacific Northwest is a welcome and overdue resource.

Book Forests and Forestry in the American States

Download or read book Forests and Forestry in the American States written by Ralph R. Widner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 632 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forests and Forestry in the American States: A Reference Anthology Forestry as a matter of public policy is scarcely over 80 years old in America. As a profession, it is barely over 65. As a definitive science it is about 50. Forestry came to the United States in several distinct stages. Born as an idea in the minds of a few men and women, it sprang into adolescence as a political movement in the last decades of the nineteenth century. It matured as it grew into a profession Shortly after the beginning of the twentieth. It is now, as a science, just entering its prime, its finest years still ahead. American forestry grew up pragmatically in the same way that its parent, the American political system, flourished. An idea was tried. If it worked, it was retained. If it did not, it was cast aside. This trial and error approach to national policy is uniquely possible in the United States because of the country's political structure. Because the states of the Union have retained large areas of sovereignty to themselves, the American nation is much like a network of great laboratories with a wide range of social, economic, and political experiments going on all the time. In no field has this trying and testing been more appropriate than in the field of forestry. Woodland conditions vary so radically from one part of the continent to an other that a national plan for forestry, even if it had been politically possible, would probably have been impossible technically during the infant years of the science. Instead the diversity of political and physical conditions in the states led to a healthier, more flexible, and more appropriate set of American forest policies than any centralized approach could have produced. Book America s Private Forests

Download or read book America s Private Forests written by Constance Best and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-02-22 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 430 million acres of forests in the United States are privately owned, but the viability, and indeed the very existence, of these forests is increasingly threatened by population growth, sprawling urbanization, and patchwork development. Scientists, policymakers, and community leaders have begun to recognize the vital role of private forests in providing society with essential goods and services, from sustainable timber supplies to clean water. Yet despite the tremendous economic and ecological importance of private forests, information about their status and strategies for their protection have been in short supply. America's Private Forests addresses that shortcoming, presenting extensive data gathered from diverse sources and offering a concise overview of the current status of privately owned forests in the United States. As well as describing the state of private forests, the book sets forth detailed information on a wide range of approaches to conservation along with an action agenda for implementing those strategies likely to be most effective. The book: identifies the major threats to private forests in the United States considers barriers to conservation outlines the available tools and programs for promoting conservation presents a "road map" to guide collective efforts for the conservation of private forests and their native biodiversity Based on extensive research of existing literature as well as interviews and consultation with leading forestry and conservation experts, America's Private Forests is a unique sourcebook that offers a solid basis for discussion of threats to private forests along with an invaluable compendium of potential solutions. It will serve as an invaluable reference for all those working to conserve and steward forest resources, including forest owners and their consultants, conservation organizations, and agency personnel, as well as researchers and students involved with issues of forestry, biodiversity, land use, and conservation.
