Book Forest fire scar Aging Using SPOT VEGETATION for Canadian Ecoregions

Download or read book Forest fire scar Aging Using SPOT VEGETATION for Canadian Ecoregions written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remote sensing techniques can aid in forest fire mapping, especially in remote areas and during busy fire seasons. The SPOT-VEGETATION (SV) sensor has previously shown promise at distinguishing fire scars on the landscape. This paper evaluates the usefulness of the SV sensor to age fires in 18 Canadian ecoregions for a period of up to 50 years since fire. The SV reflectances were evaluated using the ratio of the short wave infrared band to near infrared band, compared with the Canadian large-fire database. Results show the dependence of fire-scar age prediction on ecoregion and on time following fire. Applications, limitations, & uncertainties of the SV data are discussed.

Book An Analysis of Literature on Natural Fire Disturbances in Relation to Ontario s Forest Management Guide for Natural Disturbance Pattern Emulation

Download or read book An Analysis of Literature on Natural Fire Disturbances in Relation to Ontario s Forest Management Guide for Natural Disturbance Pattern Emulation written by Lisa J. Buse and published by Sault Ste. Marie : Ontario Forest Research Institute. This book was released on 2004 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario's "Forest management guide for natural disturbance pattern emulation" provides direction for emulating natural fire disturbances in forest management planning. This report examines the North American scientific literature on natural fire disturbances in relation to the directions in this guide for: landscape harvest size patterns; landscape harvest patch separation; residual stands; and residual trees & downed woody debris. Gaps in the published knowledge are identified. An annotated bibliography of the literature reviewed for the report is included.

Book Soil Respiration in a Fire Scar Chronosequence of Canadian Boreal Jack Pine Forest

Download or read book Soil Respiration in a Fire Scar Chronosequence of Canadian Boreal Jack Pine Forest written by Daniel Robert Smith and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research investigates soil respiration (Rs) in a boreal jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) fire scar chronosequence at Sharpsand Creek, Ontario, Canada. During two field campaigns in 2006 and 2007, Rs was measured in a chronosequence of fire scars in the range 0 to 59 years since fire. Mean Rs adjusted for soil temperature (Ts) and soil moisture (Ms) (Rs T, M) ranged from 0.56?mol CO2/m2/s (32 years post fire) to 8.18?mol CO2/m2/s (58 years post fire). Coefficient of variation (CV) of Rs adjusted for Ts and Ms ranged from 20% (16 years post fire) to 56% (58 years post fire). Across the field site, there was a significant exponential relationship between Rs adjusted for soil organic carbon (Cs) and Ts (P = 1.24*10-06; Q10 = 2.21) but no effect of Ms on Rs adjusted for Cs and Ts for the range 0.21 to 0.77 volumetric Ms (P = 0.702). Rs T, M significantly (P = 0.030) decreased after burning mature forest, though no significant (P> 0.1) difference could be detected between recently burned and unburned young forest. Rs was measured in recently burned boreal jack pine fire scar age categories that differed in their burn history and there was a significant difference in Rs T, M between previously 32 v 16 year old (P = 0.000) and previously 32 v 59 year old (P = 0.044) scars. There was a strong significant exponential increase in S R T, M with time since fire (r2 = 0.999; P = 0.006) for the chronosequence 0, 16 and 59 years post fire, and for all these age categories, Rs T, M was significantly different from one another (P

Book Wildland Fuel Fundamentals and Applications

Download or read book Wildland Fuel Fundamentals and Applications written by Robert E. Keane and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-11-04 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new era in wildland fuel sciences is now evolving in such a way that fire scientists and managers need a comprehensive understanding of fuels ecology and science to fully understand fire effects and behavior on diverse ecosystem and landscape characteristics. This is a reference book on wildland fuel science; a book that describes fuels and their application in land management. There has never been a comprehensive book on wildland fuels; most wildland fuel information was put into wildland fire science and management books as separate chapters and sections. This book is the first to highlight wildland fuels and treat them as a natural resource rather than a fire behavior input. Moreover, there has never been a comprehensive description of fuels and their ecology, measurement, and description under one reference; most wildland fuel information is scattered across diverse and unrelated venues from combustion science to fire ecology to carbon dynamics. The literature and data for wildland fuel science has never been synthesized into one reference; most studies were done for diverse and unique objectives. This book is the first to link the disparate fields of ecology, wildland fire, and carbon to describe fuel science. This just deals with the science and ecology of wildland fuels, not fuels management. However, since expensive fuel treatments are being planned in fire dominated landscapes across the world to minimize fire damage to people, property and ecosystems, it is incredibly important that people understand wildland fuels to develop more effective fuel management activities.
