Book Forage Plants and Their Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Forage Plants and Their Culture Classic Reprint written by Charles V. Piper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forage Plants and Their Culture The exceedingly diversified climatic conditions in North America have led to the cultivation Of an unusually large number of plant species for forage production. Some Of these are successful or important over but a comparatively small area, and not one is capable of profitable cultivation over the whole region. The climatic conditions Of some parts of North America, especially the dry regions and the southernmost states, are not closely duplicated in any part of Europe. This fact has necessitated the introduction of numerous grasses and legumes from other regions to secure forage plants capable of profitable cultivation. The success of these endeavors has resulted in the utilization of many forage crops practically unknown in Europe, such as numer ous varieties of sorghum, cowpeas, soybeans, Japan clover Florida beggarweed, velvet bean, Bermuda-grass, Rhodes grass, and many others. In some sections, there is still need of better adapted or more productive forage crops. Extensive experimental investigations have been conducted with only a few forage crops in America, so that there yet remains much to be learned concerning most Of the others. The aim Of the author has been to present as concisely as practicable the present state of our knowledge with ref erence to each forage crop grown in America, and it is hoped that no important contributions to the subject have been omitted. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pasture Grasses and Forage Plants, and Their Seeds, Weeds, and Parasites Others again advocate the use of forage plants and grasses hitherto unknown to our agriculture, and so far has all this gone that a large section of the agricultural public is puzzled what guide to follow. Again it may be noted - ii one may draw inferences from the queries addressed to the agricultural press, and from the results of many conversations held by the writer with farmers, and with people who sell seeds in different parts of the United Kingdom - that there is a surprising lack of information on the subject of the parasites that injure or destroy the forage plants and the weeds that rob or stifle them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fodder and Pasture Plants Agriculture is an art that renders those who understand it rich, but leaves those who do not understand it. However much they may labour in it, to live in poverty - Xenophon, 434 - 355, bc. When we consider that about one-third of the improved land in Canada is under fodder and forage crops, the importance of dis seminating information respecting fodder and pasture plants must be apparent to all. That the interest taken in these plants really is very great is amply illustrated by the numerous inquiries that have been received during recent years by the Department Of Agriculture. Book Range Grasses of California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Range Grasses of California Classic Reprint written by Arthur William Sampson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Range Grasses of California To apply the best methods of range management, the stockman must be able to judge the condition of the range for himself. To do this he must know the principal forage plants, their period of life, and their requirements as to reproduction. The illustrated keys, brief descriptions, and pictures of the plants should assist him in this. The purpose of this bulletin is (1) to familiarize stockmen with the more important grasses of the State and show where they grow, and (2) to point out their forage value and the conditions under which the different kinds reproduce under grazing. This is a necessary pre liminary to the development of state-wide range reseeding methods now under investigation. In the preparation of this paper the authors have made use of the valuable collections and data in the grass herbarium of the United States Department of Agriculture. Several Of the illustrations were lent by the Department. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pastures and Pasture Plants In the compilation of a treatise on any craft, the recorded experience of great authorities must of necessity be consulted, if not, to some extent, form the basis of such treatise; and though we have striven in the pages following to concisely summarise chiefly our own experiences in pasture-making from carefully kept records covering nearly 100 years' work, we have great pleasure in specially acknowledging our indebtedness to the following works: - 1. The scattered writings of Mr. William Carruthers, F.R.S., F.L.S., the accomplished consulting botanist to the Royal Agricultural Society, who unites to Sinclair's exact knowledge of pasture plants probably the most precise and extended acquaintance with English pastures ever yet attained, and to whose kindly and untiring courtesy is due much of what merit may lie in this manual. 2. The scattered writings of Sir John Bennett Lawes, F.R.S., LL.D., of Rothamsted, whose profound knowledge of the subjects he has made his own is equalled by his willingness to impart information, and to whom also we owe much special and invaluable help. 3. The works, especially The Best Forage Plants, a laborious and singularly accurate translation from the German by Mr. A. N. McAlpine, B.Sc, botanist to the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland, and Les Melanges de Graines Fourrageres, done into French by M. C. Denaiffe, of Dr. G. Stebler, whose long experience as Director of the Swiss Experiment and Seed Control Station enables him to speak with special authority on forage plants and their seeds, and whose esteemed and kind assistance we gratefully acknowledge. 4. G. Sinclair's Hortus Gramineus Woburnensis, still our standard work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
