Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In Hillman’s world, the surer you become about who you are, the more vulnerable you get.”—The San Francisco Bay Guardian “Hillman’s writing is sexy because it’s smart and refuses to simplify things.”—Fabula Magazine "Hillman's utterly unabashed memoir...showcases both the personal, embodied realities of intersex, and the social and political milieus that shape them... Intersex, too, is gorgeously written."—Women's Review of Books "It's utterly impossible to not be spellbound by performer-activist Thea Hillman, in person or in print ... A must-read."—Curve “There’s nothing else in print like this amazing and courageous book.”—Patrick Califia, author of Sex Changes: The Politics of Transgenderism “An important and wonderfully disarming book. Poetic, political, and deeply personal.”—Beth Lisick, author of Helping Me Help Myself Intersex (For Lack of a Better Word) chronicles one person’s search for self in a world obsessed with normal. What is “intersex”? According to the Intersex Society of North America, the word describes someone born with sex chromosomes, genitalia, or an internal reproductive system that are neither clearly male nor clearly female. In first-person prose as intimate as a diary, Thea Hillman redefines memoir in a series of compelling stories that take a no-holds-barred look at sex, gender, family, and community. Whether she’s pondering quirky family tendencies (“Drag”), reflecting on “queerness” (“Another”), or recounting scintillating adventures in San Francisco’s sex clubs, Hillman’s brave and fierce vision for cultural and societal change shines through.

Book Killer on the Grassy Knoll

Download or read book Killer on the Grassy Knoll written by Richard Joseph Zazzi and published by Richard Joseph Zazzi. This book was released on 2014 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it ever okay for a government to lie to the people? This work is a fiction novel that provides answers to the unnerving questions surrounding the John F. Kennedy assassination. It tells a story about people of power and the extremes they will go, to protect their interests. The John F. Kennedy assassination is inarguably one of the most publicly witnessed murder in the history of the United States. This thriller, as well as the sequel, Killer at the Ambassador Hotel, his fourth book, shows the author's deep Italian roots as he reflects on family traditions and relationships. Both mystery novels tie the Mafia into the Kennedy assassinations and follow a dutiful grandson as he abides by his family's rules. Although the outcome is all too well known, Richard provides an alternative possibility regarding the "How" of this tragic event in history.

Corey Douglas and his K-9 partner, Simon Garfunkel, have recently retired from the police force. Not ready to give up the life yet, they come up with a proposal for fellow former cop, Laurie Carpenter, and her investigating partner, Marcus. Laurie and Marcus – who help out Laurie’s lawyer husband Andy on cases – have been chafing to jump back into investigating on their own, so they are in. They call themselves the K Team, in honor of Simon. Their first job as private investigators comes to them from Judge Henry Henderson, who's known as a very tough but fair judge, and they've all come up against him in court at one time or another. Though it's hard to believe, Judge Henderson is being blackmailed and extorted, and he doesn't want to involve the police--he needs the K Team to figure out why.

Book Rebel Music in the Triumphant Empire

Download or read book Rebel Music in the Triumphant Empire written by David Pearson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the dawn of the 1990s, as the United States celebrated its victory in the Cold War and sole superpower status by waging war on Iraq and proclaiming democratic capitalism as the best possible society, the 1990s underground punk renaissance transformed the punk scene into a site of radical opposition to American empire. Nazi skinheads were ejected from the punk scene; apathetic attitudes were challenged; women, Latino, and LGBTQ participants asserted their identities and perspectives within punk; the scene debated the virtues of maintaining DIY purity versus venturing into the musical mainstream; and punks participated in protest movements from animal rights to stopping the execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal to shutting down the 1999 WTO meeting. Punk lyrics offered strident critiques of American empire, from its exploitation of the Third World to its warped social relations. Numerous subgenres of punk proliferated to deliver this critique, such as the blazing hardcore punk of bands like Los Crudos, propagandistic crust-punk/dis-core, grindcore and power violence with tempos over 800 beats per minute, and So-Cal punk with its combination of melody and hardcore. Musical analysis of each of these styles and the expressive efficacy of numerous bands reveals that punk is not merely simplistic three-chord rock music, but a genre that is constantly revolutionizing itself in which nuances of guitar riffs, vocal timbres, drum beats, and song structures are deeply meaningful to its audience, as corroborated by the robust discourse in punk zines.

Book A Covenant of Creatures

  • Author : Michael Fagenblat
  • Publisher : Stanford University Press

Download or read book A Covenant of Creatures written by Michael Fagenblat and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-03 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I am not a particularly Jewish thinker," said Emmanuel Levinas, "I am just a thinker." This book argues against the idea, affirmed by Levinas himself, that Totality and Infinity and Otherwise Than Being separate philosophy from Judaism. By reading Levinas's philosophical works through the prism of Judaic texts and ideas, Michael Fagenblat argues that what Levinas called "ethics" is as much a hermeneutical product wrought from the Judaic heritage as a series of phenomenological observations. Decoding the Levinas's philosophy of Judaism within a Heideggerian and Pauline framework, Fagenblat uses biblical, rabbinic, and Maimonidean texts to provide sustained interpretations of the philosopher's work. Ultimately he calls for a reconsideration of the relation between tradition and philosophy, and of the meaning of faith after the death of epistemology.
