Book Chickens in the Road

Download or read book Chickens in the Road written by Suzanne McMinn and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2013-10-08 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Suzanne McMinn, a former romance writer and founder of the popular blog chickensintheroad.com, shares the story of her search to lead a life of ordinary splendor in Chickens in the Road, her inspiring and funny memoir. Craving a life that would connect her to the earth and her family roots, McMinn packed up her three kids, left her husband and her sterile suburban existence behind, and moved to rural West Virginia. Amid the rough landscape and beauty of this rural mountain country, she pursues a natural lifestyle filled with chickens, goats, sheep—and no pizza delivery. With her new life comes an unexpected new love—"52," a man as beguiling and enigmatic as his nickname—a turbulent romance that reminds her that peace and fulfillment can be found in the wake of heartbreak. Coping with formidable challenges, including raising a trio of teenagers, milking stubborn cows, being snowed in with no heat, and making her own butter, McMinn realizes that she’s living a forty-something’s coming-of-age story. As she dares to become self-reliant and embrace her independence, she reminds us that life is a bold adventure—if we’re willing to live it. Chickens in the Road includes more than 20 recipes, craft projects, and McMinn’s photography, and features a special two-color design.

Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1889 edition. Excerpt: ...food is all they require, and in winter hay and roots, unless they are severely worked. There are few conditions under which a healthy bull requires artificial food. As a rule, calving takes place between January and May, but it is worth the while of the dairy farmer to consider whether it will not pay him better to calve some or all of his cows in October and November. Winter milk will frequently pay ten-pence a gallon, where summer milk pays only sixpence. The question resolves itself more into the facilities which a man possesses, and he can work oat for himself the relative cost of his summer and winter feeding. If, by producing winter milk, after allowing sufficient margin for the extra cost of feeding, he can make more money, it would be wise to do so, one reason being that summer production is gradually getting too extensive, especially as regards milk-selling. Cows for calving should not be milked within at least six weeks of calving, and where there is any suspicion of milk fever, they are better turned upon poor pasture and their rations reduced by degrees. A fullfleshed cow should always be carefully watched, and there is no better plan than to administer good doses of Epsom salts two and four days respectively before the day of calving. Ordinary Jerseys are seldom troubled with milk fever or calving complaints, and may get 2 lbs. of bran daily right up to calving, after which their ration will be increased. Cotton-cake is one of the most valuable of milk-producing foods, and may be given on pasture at the rate of from 2 lbs. to 4 lbs. per cow through the summer, with advantage to the animal as well as to the land. In breeding, it will be found a good practice to put heifers to the bull at 18 to 24 months, although with the...

Book The Animal Farm Buttermilk Cookbook

Download or read book The Animal Farm Buttermilk Cookbook written by Diane St. Clair and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Through her recipes, devoted entirely to what she describes as the ‘elixir of the human race,’ Diane draws you into the rhythms of life on a farm.” —Thomas Keller, The French Laundry For anyone who’s enjoying a return to real food, true buttermilk remains one of the great, undiscovered pleasures. Many people enjoy organic produce, grass-fed meats, and artisan breads, but “real” dairy has been slower to reach a wide market. In fact, dairy products have long been pasteurized and homogenized into bland tastelessness, with no regard to where the product came from or how it was made. On Animal Farm in Orwell, Vermont, Diane St. Clair takes butter and buttermilk production to a new level. The Animal Farm Buttermilk Cookbook explains her techniques, from animal husbandry and land management, to her creamery processes. Here you’ll learn how to make your own butter and buttermilk at home, and then experiment with the fabulous ways in which buttermilk enhances food flavors and textures. You’ll also find practical but unique recipes for using buttermilk—everything from buttermilk doughnuts dipped in maple syrup, to salmon chowder, buttermilk ricotta gnocchi, and harissa buttermilk salad dressing. Families will love the buttermilk béchamel pizza, the spicy buttermilk gingerbread, and pork chops smothered in buttermilk sauce. Buttermilk is not just for waffles anymore—although the best waffle recipe you’ll ever find is in this book! “This book beautifully shares both her life as a dairy farmer and artisan, and many of her incredible recipes, and will have you seeking out great buttermilk to cook and bake all year round.” —Barbara Lynch, James Beard Award–winning chef

Book Food Chains

  • Author : Warren Belasco
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press
  • Release : 2011-06-03

Download or read book Food Chains written by Warren Belasco and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the integrity of food production and distribution has become an issue of wide social concern. The media frequently report on cases of food contamination as well as on the risks of hormones and cloning. Journalists, documentary filmmakers, and activists have had their say, but until now a survey of the latest research on the history of the modern food-provisioning system—the network that connects farms and fields to supermarkets and the dining table—has been unavailable. In Food Chains, Warren Belasco and Roger Horowitz present a collection of fascinating case studies that reveal the historical underpinnings and institutional arrangements that compose this system. The dozen essays in Food Chains range widely in subject, from the pig, poultry, and seafood industries to the origins of the shopping cart. The book examines what it took to put ice in nineteenth-century refrigerators, why Soviet citizens could buy ice cream whenever they wanted, what made Mexican food popular in France, and why Americans turned to commercial pet food in place of table scraps for their dogs and cats. Food Chains goes behind the grocery shelves, explaining why Americans in the early twentieth century preferred to buy bread rather than make it and how Southerners learned to like self-serve shopping. Taken together, these essays demonstrate the value of a historical perspective on the modern food-provisioning system.

After losing their farm in the early 1980s, a chance encounter with a French-trained chef at their farmers' market stand led the Jones family to remake their business and learn to grow unique ingredients that were considered exotic at the time, like microgreens and squash blossoms.
