Book excerpt: Though polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been banned in the United States for more than thirty years, the toxic effects of their presence in local environments continue to be a significant public health concern. PCBs: Human and Environmental Disposition and Toxicology brings together more than fifty established specialists on PCB toxicity to discuss recent trends and specialized investigations of PCB influences on the environment and on humans. Renowned scientists including Paul S. Cooke, Takeshi Nakano, Tomas Trnovec, Deborah C. Rice, Linda S. Birnbaum, and Charles S. Wong present cutting-edge research on Hudson River PCBs, human contamination, homologue profiles, high PCB exposure in Slovakia, and PCB effects on the thyroid hormone, nutrition, and estrogen levels in humans and animals. Focusing on the detection, movement, metabolism, toxicity, remediation, and risk assessment of PCB contamination, this multi-disciplinary study is a valuable resource for regulatory agencies and scientists working with PCBs.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PCBs have captured the attention of scientists, journalists and the public for three decades, but during most of that time attention was focused on a small number of the 209 possible chlorobiphenyls. Recent work has implicated many of the forgotten and/or unstudied congeners as neuro-endocrine active and potential developmental toxicants. This interest has created a need for information regarding the `non-dioxin-like' PCBs. The ortho Side of PCBs: Occurrence and Disposition integrates historical information, analytical interpretations, and global concepts with recent comprehensive residue reports and public health concerns. This condensed source of extensive information provides detailed comparisons of comprehensive data in a consistent format. The data will improve the accuracy of concepts regarding the occurrence and disposition of the 60-100 (rather than 6-10) most important congeners. Actual PCB burdens are shown to deviate from average steady-state profiles through sporadic exposures to unique mixtures characteristic of individual dietary sources. The task of accurate hazard characterization and risk assessment can be overwhelming, especially when sporadic changes are considered. Models and relationships are suggested to facilitate the efficient categorization and evaluation of the more important congeners.

Book PCB Design for Real World EMI Control

Download or read book PCB Design for Real World EMI Control written by Bruce R. Archambeault and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proper design of printed circuit boards can make the difference between a product passing emissions requirements during the first cycle or not. Traditional EMC design practices have been simply rule-based, that is, a list of rules-of-thumb are presented to the board designers to implement. When a particular rule-of-thumb is difficult to implement, it is often ignored. After the product is built, it will often fail emission requirements and various time consuming and costly add-ons are then required. Proper EMC design does not require advanced degrees from universities, nor does it require strenuous mathematics. It does require a basic understanding of the underlying principles of the potential causes of EMC emissions. With this basic understanding, circuit board designers can make trade-off decisions during the design phase to ensure optimum EMC design. Consideration of these potential sources will allow the design to pass the emissions requirements the first time in the test laboratory. A number of other books have been published on EMC. Most are general books on EMC and do not focus on printed circuit board is intended to help EMC engineers and design design. This book engineers understand the potential sources of emissions and how to reduce, control, or eliminate these sources. This book is intended to be a 'hands-on' book, that is, designers should be able to apply the concepts in this book directly to their designs in the real-world.

Book PCB Polychlorinated Biphenyls Cleanup Activities on the Upper Hudson River

Download or read book PCB Polychlorinated Biphenyls Cleanup Activities on the Upper Hudson River written by I. G. Carcich and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the fall of 1979 at a similar gathering in New Orleans, I reported that the Hudson River was contaminated with polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). Unfortunately, the Hudson river remains contaminated with PCBs and very little has been done to correct this problem. A summary of the distribution of residual PCBs in the Hudson River Basin is presented in Table 1. Anticipating that Federal funds would become available to New York State for the removal of PCB-contaminated sediments, engineering efforts were continued in an attempt to narrow down the dredging systems selections and to finalize the design report for the PCB containment site. At the same time, scientific studies were also continued to focus on refining the extent of the PCB contamination and to evaluate the full impact of the PCBs on the ecology of the river.

Book Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compliance Issues in the 21ST Century

Download or read book Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compliance Issues in the 21ST Century written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thirty-one years have passed since the United States Congress passed the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) [1]. The 1976 law essentially eliminated future production of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) within the United States and greatly limited the use of previously manufactured PCBs and PCB products. The ultimate objective of the law was the complete elimination of these chemicals due to concerns about their potentially toxic effects on health and the environment. PCBs were manufactured in the United States between 1929 and 1977. They were highly valued for their fire and heat-resistance properties and for their chemical stability. As a result, PCBs were used in a variety of thermally and/or chemically stressful applications. They did not conduct electricity and therefore were particularly well-suited for use as insulating fluids in high-voltage electric equipment. PCBs were also used in various other applications, such as in hydraulic and heat transfer fluids. Strict controls on the use and disposal of PCBs were imposed by the TSCA implementing regulations at 40 CFR 761 [2]. As a result, most heavy users of PCB products worked hard to curtail their PCB use. Many organizations that once used substantial amounts of PCBs, subsequently declared themselves ''PCB free''. Unfortunately, in many cases, these ''PCB-free'' declarations were premature, as PCBs were used in many more applications than insulating fluids. From the 1990s and to the present day, PCBs increasingly have been discovered in non-liquid forms. These materials were used or installed in facilities constructed before the 1979 ''PCB ban''. Examples include applied paints and coatings, caulking, pre-formed joint filler, and plastic or rubber wire and cable insulation. Proper identification of these materials is necessary for appropriate and compliant waste management during decommissioning and deactivation (D & D) activities. PCBs can pose other significant waste management issues for D & D projects, particularly for nuclear facilities. Depending upon the waste form and the intended disposal path, PCBs can be regulated at thresholds in the low parts-per-billion (ppb). These low regulatory thresholds often are overlooked due to the erroneous belief by many waste management professionals that materials containing PCBs are regulated by TSCA only if their PCB concentration is at least 50 parts-per-million (ppm). Failure to recognize when and how the lower thresholds apply can lead to rejection of the waste materials by treatment, storage and disposal (TSD) facilities as well as potential regulatory non-compliance. Furthermore, re-use of ''excess'' materials with PCBs is also regulated by TSCA. In the event of a characterization error, the costs required to make necessary corrections can be very high. This paper will focus on PCB characterization and waste management issues associated with D & D of DOE nuclear facilities. It will identify PCB materials that are likely to be present in such facilities, with emphasis on the nonliquid PCB forms. The paper will discuss characterization pitfalls associated with Non-Liquid PCBs (NLPCBs), including circumstances in which NLPCBs can migrate into other materials. The paper also will identify TSCA requirements for materials with very low concentrations of PCBs; certain materials are regulated at concentrations as low as 0.5 [mu]g/L PCBs (approximately 0.5 ppb). The paper will then examine the potentially extensive impacts to a facility if the materials are not managed in a TSCA-compliant manner. Examples from a recent D & D project at the DOE Savannah River Site will be used to illustrate key points and lessons learned. It is expected that this information would be useful to other DOE sites, DoD installations and commercial nuclear facilities constructed prior to 1979.
