Book excerpt: After the Florida State Legislature passed an act calling for the creation of two seminaries of learning in 1851, West Florida Seminary was established in Tallahassee. In the 1880s, the seminary's curriculum was reorganized along the lines of a conventional four-year college, and in 1901, the name was changed to Florida State College, better suiting its well-rounded liberal arts education and the traditional college experience offered to its students. With the passage of the Buckman Act in 1905, the school began a new chapter as the Florida Female College. After the name was changed to Florida State College for Women in 1909, it went on to rank as one of the premier women's colleges in the country. In 1947, in part to accommodate the influx of returning GIs, the school resumed its coeducational status as Florida State University. Combining traditional strength in the arts and humanities with recognized leadership in the sciences, Florida State University is one of the country's foremost research institutions today.

Book excerpt: Florida Historical Society Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Award From the founding of Ybor City in 1886 to the dispersal of Tampa's Latin population in the years following World War II, Tampa's Cigar Workers documents the history of the Cuban, Spanish, and Italian immigrants who created the cigar industry in Tampa and the extraordinary multi-ethnic community that flourished around it. More than 200 photos capture this community's personalities and way of life while commentary drawn from newspaper accounts, oral histories, and archival documents identifies and explains each photograph's historical place and significance. In linking the photographs with historical text, the authors allow the cigar workers to tell their own story, in the language of their day. The rich photographic record around which the book is organized communicates the lives of these workers not only in the workplace but also in their vibrant Ybor City and West Tampa neighborhoods. The book depicts the making of cigars, the work culture, local support for the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898), unions and strikes, community institutions such as mutual aid clubs, leisure activities, and social practices surrounding courtship, marriage, and death. Highlighting the diversity of the cigar workers' community, the authors present an inspiring and deeply moving story of how these immigrants carved out their space in Tampa while struggling to survive economically and defending their ideals and way of life.

Book The Nine Lives of Florida s Famous Key Marco Cat

Download or read book The Nine Lives of Florida s Famous Key Marco Cat written by Austin J. Bell and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2021-09-21 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secrets of an iconic artifact Florida Book Awards, Bronze Medal for Florida Nonfiction Florida Trust for Historic Preservation Award for Meritorious Achievement in Preservation Communications Excavated from a waterlogged archaeological site on the shores of subtropical Florida by legendary anthropologist Frank Hamilton Cushing in 1896, the Key Marco Cat has become a modern icon of heritage, history, and local identity. This book takes readers into the deep past of the artifact and the Native American society in which it was created. Austin Bell explores nine periods in the life of the six-inch-high wooden carving, beginning with how it was sculpted with shell and shark-tooth tools and what it may have represented to the ancient Calusa—perhaps a human-panther god. Preserved in the muck for centuries on Marco Island and discovered in pristine condition due to its oxygen-free environment, the Cat has since traveled more than 12,000 miles and has been viewed by millions of people. It is one of the Smithsonian Institution’s most irreplaceable items. In this fascinating account, Bell traces the clues to the Cat’s mysterious origins that have emerged in its later lives. Captivating readers with the miracle and beauty of this rare example of pre-Columbian art, Bell marvels at how an object originally understood to hold cosmological power has indeed transformed the people and places around it. The Nine Lives of Florida’s Famous Key Marco Cat is the story of a timeless masterpiece of staggering simplicity that has prevailed over impossibly long odds.

Book The First State University

Download or read book The First State University written by William S. Powell and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Powell's The First State University, originally published in 1972 and revised in 1979, has become a classic for many Carolina alumni and friends. This third edition brings the story up to date with photographs from the 1980s, a decade that produced the Davis Library, the "Dean Dome", Michael Jordan, and a 1988 campus educational forum featuring the seven Democratic presidential candidates. Several recently discovered photographs from previous eras have also been added, including the earliest-known picture of the student body and a photograph of the University's first female professor, who was appointed in 1927. In loving detail, this book captures the character and charm of the University over the years - its campus, administrators, faculty, classes, athletic programs, and student life. The idea of an institution of higher education in North Carolina was born in the minds of colonial leaders before the American Revolution. They chartered a college, but King George III refused to approve the law under which it could be established. North Carolinians proceeded to operate a college without royal authority until it fell victim to Revolutionary times. In 1776, when the idea of a state university became a possibility, the founders of this college joined alumni and others in advancing the cause of higher education. It is here that this stunning pictorial history begins. Photographs, sketches, silhouettes, oil paintings, watercolors, and other visual images tell the story of how the University was established, how it grew, and what contributions it has made to the people of North Carolina, the South, the nation, and the world. Many people, places, and events are identified, and changesover time are highlighted. The physical growth of the campus is dramatically portrayed through the use of pictures made from approximately the same spot but decades apart. Numerous photographs of individuals suggest the range of important positions held by alumni, and group pictures of faculty and students provide a unique opportunity to "people watch" across the years.
