Book excerpt: I Shed My Skin, A Furneaux Islands Story evolved out of an exhibition of Jane Giblin's artwork which toured Tasmania in 2019. It revolves around strangers who come to a remote land and learn how to win a living from it. Traditions and relationships to the Furneaux Islands, built since the 1890s, were consolidated across five generations. During the latter part of the twentieth century significant changes had to be met. Giblin travelled up and down the eastern seaboard of Australia interviewing her father's cousins in addition to some senior Furneaux community members. She knew there was art to be made and stories to tell from their island lives. She sought memories of her great grandparents, feelings about the islands, and farming and birding as well as how they were acclimatizing to changed land access and tradition due to successful land rights claims by local First Nations people. Giblin's part-collaborator on her exhibition and book is retired lecturer in geography and well-known Tasmanian writer, Pete Hay. Hay accompanied Giblin on some of her visits to people and island places of significance; his wit, grit and heart providing a rich sounding board. His poetry and prose add significantly to Jane's observations and artwork in this beautifully presented publication.

Book excerpt: A handsome full-colour book pairing unique items from the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery with selections of original writing about the southern island. Indigenous dispossession, a cruel penal history, gay-rights battles; exceptional landscapes, unusual wildlife, environmental activism; colonial architecture, arts and crafts, a thriving creative scene—all are part of the story of Tasmania. And they find their expression in the unparalleled collection of Hobart’s TMAG. In Island Story, Ralph Crane and Danielle Wood select almost sixty representative TMAG objects: from shell necklaces to a convict cowl, colonial scrimshaw to a thylacine pincushion, contemporary photography to a film star’s travelling case. Each is matched to texts old and new, by writers as diverse as Anthony Trollope, Marie Bjelke-Petersen, Helene Chung, Jim Everett, Heather Rose and Ben Walter. This is the perfect gift for anyone interested in the island everyone is talking about. Ralph Crane is the author or editor of more than twenty academic books. He lives in Hobart and is Professor of English at the University of Tasmania. Danielle Wood is the author of The Alphabet of Light and Dark, Rosie Little’s Cautionary Tales for Girls, Mothers Grimm and two non-fiction books on Marjorie Bligh, and co-author of the Angelica Banks series. She lives in Hobart and teaches at the University of Tasmania. ‘While the twenty-four stories in this beautiful anthology range from colonial to contemporary times, they have a common theme—a pervading sense of the landscape.’ Age on Deep South ‘The collection is strong...The editors pull no punches.’ Sun-Herald on Deep South ‘Offers readers a glimpse into the imagery and symbolism that has come to shape how outsiders perceive the island.’ Australian on Deep South

Book The Aborigines of Tasmania s Furneaux Group

Download or read book The Aborigines of Tasmania s Furneaux Group written by Paul Tapp and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-09-06 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A composite of accounts of whaling and sealing, including the A.L.Meston essay on 'Half-castes of the Furneaux Group'. They came from across the globe in tall ships, in billowing sails, iconic of an era hell-bent on supplying the colonies and the giant cities of the northern hemisphere with their insatiable industrial needs. The many out of print publications to which I have referred, are conservative in their appraisal of the sealing and whaling hey-day of Tasmania, particularly the expansive bays and estuaries of the south and the islands of Bass Strait, the Furneaux Group. But it was the universal expression of the day of those authors, not to paraphrase in any emotional terms, the end result of that period of exploitation. They came, they slaughtered and regarded their new-found paradise as no more than their 'happy hunting-grounds' & moved on...for no other reason than that of the industrial pragmatic...there was nothing left. This publication salvages works otherwise lost to posterity.
