Book The Physics of Flight

Download or read book The Physics of Flight written by Albert Storace and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-12-04 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Physics of Flight provides a comprehensive explanatory reference on the basic physics of flight with a clear presentation of the underlying mathematics. It presents a momentum-based explanation of lift making no use of Bernoulli’s theorem. Misconceptions are disproved, such as identifying centrifugal force experienced in an airplane undergoing maneuvers as a fictitious force, and not attributing weightlessness during airplane pitch over or experienced in an airplane performing a parabolic flight path to the effects of free fall. This book places particular emphasis on Newton’s second law of motion to explain the effects of forces acting on an airplane, the mechanism of lift, and the principles of propulsion. This book is intended for undergraduate aviation and aerospace students taking courses in Flight Dynamics, Introduction to Flight, and Physics of Flight.

Book Estimation of Flight Performance with Closed form Approximations to the Equations of Motion

Download or read book Estimation of Flight Performance with Closed form Approximations to the Equations of Motion written by Charlie M. Jackson and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approximate method for calculating climb and acceleration performance of an air-breathing aircraft has been developed. Basically, the method involves linearization of the equations of motion to obtain closed-form expressions for the desired performance parameters. These expressions are applied over finite velocity intervals where the aerodynamic, propulsion, and flight-path parameters are assumed to be constant. The method is extended by a rapidly convergent iteration procedure to estimate the climb performance for a flight path limited by sonic-boom considerations. Typical examples are presented where the performance is estimated for an air-breathing boost mission to hypersonic speeds and for a complete supersonic-transport mission. The examples illustrate the simplicity of the method and show that the estimated performance is in good agreement with the results of a numerical integration of the equations of motion. The application of the approximate method to these examples indicates the utility of the method for producing performance estimates suitable for preliminary airframe design, sizing studies, propulsion-system evaluation, and cursory heat-transfer and inlet-flow-field determinations along a flight path. In order to increase the utility of the method further, nomograms are presented which provide rapid solutions to the approximate performance equations.

Book Basic Flight Mechanics

Download or read book Basic Flight Mechanics written by Ashish Tewari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents flight mechanics of aircraft, spacecraft, and rockets to technical and non-technical readers in simple terms and based purely on physical principles. Adapting an accessible and lucid writing style, the book retains the scientific authority and conceptual substance of an engineering textbook without requiring a background in physics or engineering mathematics. Professor Tewari explains relevant physical principles of flight by straightforward examples and meticulous diagrams and figures. Important aspects of both atmospheric and space flight mechanics are covered, including performance, stability and control, aeroelasticity, orbital mechanics, and altitude control. The book describes airplanes, gliders, rotary wing and flapping wing flight vehicles, rockets, and spacecraft and visualizes the essential principles using detailed illustration. It is an ideal resource for managers and technicians in the aerospace industry without engineering degrees, pilots, and anyone interested in the mechanics of flight.

Book Flight Theory and Aerodynamics

Download or read book Flight Theory and Aerodynamics written by Charles E. Dole and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pilot's guide to aeronautics and the complex forces of flight Flight Theory and Aerodynamics is the essential pilot's guide to the physics of flight, designed specifically for those with limited engineering experience. From the basics of forces and vectors to craft-specific applications, this book explains the mechanics behind the pilot's everyday operational tasks. The discussion focuses on the concepts themselves, using only enough algebra and trigonometry to illustrate key concepts without getting bogged down in complex calculations, and then delves into the specific applications for jets, propeller crafts, and helicopters. This updated third edition includes new chapters on Flight Environment, Aircraft Structures, and UAS-UAV Flight Theory, with updated craft examples, component photos, and diagrams throughout. FAA-aligned questions and regulatory references help reinforce important concepts, and additional worked problems provide clarification on complex topics. Modern flight control systems are becoming more complex and more varied between aircrafts, making it essential for pilots to understand the aerodynamics of flight before they ever step into a cockpit. This book provides clear explanations and flight-specific examples of the physics every pilot must know. Review the basic physics of flight Understand the applications to specific types of aircraft Learn why takeoff and landing entail special considerations Examine the force concepts behind stability and control As a pilot, your job is to balance the effects of design, weight, load factors, and gravity during flight maneuvers, stalls, high- or low-speed flight, takeoff and landing, and more. As aircraft grow more complex and the controls become more involved, an intuitive grasp of the physics of flight is your most valuable tool for operational safety. Flight Theory and Aerodynamics is the essential resource every pilot needs for a clear understanding of the forces they control.

Book Aerodynamics and Aircraft Performance

Download or read book Aerodynamics and Aircraft Performance written by James F. Marchman and published by James F. Marchman. This book was released on with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamics and Aircraft Performance, 3rd edition is a college undergraduate-level introduction to aircraft aerodynamics and performance. This text is designed for a course in Aircraft Performance that is taught before the students have had any course in fluid mechanics, fluid dynamics, or aerodynamics. The text is meant to provide the essential information from these types of courses that is needed for teaching basic subsonic aircraft performance, and it is assumed that the students will learn the full story of aerodynamics in other, later courses. The text assumes that the students will have had a university level Physics sequence in which they will have been introduced to the most fundamental concepts of statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and basic conservation laws that are needed to understand the coverage that follows. It is also assumed that students will have completed first year university level calculus sequence plus a course in multi-variable calculus. Separate courses in engineering statics and dynamics are helpful but not necessary. Any student who takes a course using this text after completing courses in aerodynamics or fluid dynamics should find the chapters of this book covering those subjects an interesting review of the material. The 236-page text was created specifically for use by undergraduate students in Aerospace Engineering and was based on Professor Marchman’s many years of experience teaching related subject matter as well as his numerous wind tunnel research projects related to aircraft aerodynamics and his personal experience as the owner and pilot of a general aviation airplane. It has been used at Virginia Tech and other universities.
