Cette théorie se fonde sur l'existence d'une liaison entre le niveau du salaire et la productivité du travail ; dans ce cas, le niveau optimal du salaire n'a aucune raison de correspondre à son niveau walrasien, entraînant le plus souvent un excès d'offre sur le marché du travail. A l'équilibre, le salaire est rigide à la baisse malgré l'existence d'un niveau positif de chômage. On commence par dégager les principales implications de la relation salaire-productivité, puis l'on s'interroge sur les fondements stratégiques du salaire d'efficience. On montre ensuite comment la rigidité des salaires associée à un volant du chômage peut jouer le rôle d'un mécanisme incitatif lorsque les firmes n'observent qu'imparfaitement les performances de leurs employés. Enfin, on tente de relier la théorie du salaire d'efficience aux représentations dualistes du marché du travail.
