(6) Columns for Discount on Purchases and Discount on Notes on the same side of the Cash Book; (c) Columns for Discount on Sales and Cash Sales on the debit side of the Cash Book; (d) Departmental columns in the Sales Book and in the Purchase Book. Controlling Accounts.--The addition of special columns in books of original entry makes possible the keeping of Controlling Accounts. The most common examples of such accounts are Accounts Receivable account and Accounts Payable account. These summary accounts, respectively, displace individual customers' and creditors' accounts in the Ledger. The customers' accounts are then segregated in another book called the Sales Ledger or Customers' Ledger, while the creditors' accounts are kept in the Purchase or Creditors' Ledger. The original Ledger, now much reduced in size, is called the General Ledger. The Trial Balance now refers to the accounts in the General Ledger. It is evident that the task of taking a Trial Balance is greatly simplified because so many fewer accounts are involved. A Schedule of Accounts Receivable is then prepared, consisting of the balances found in the Sales Ledger, and its total must agree with the balance of the Accounts Receivable account shown in the Trial Balance. A similar Schedule of Accounts Payable, made up of all the balances in the Purchase Ledger, is prepared, and it must agree with the balance of the Accounts Payable account of the General Ledger." The Balance Sheet.--In the more elementary part of the text, the student learned how to prepare a Statement of Assets and Liabilities for the purpose of disclosing the net capital of an enterprise. In the present chapter he was shown how to prepare a similar statement, the Balance Sheet. For all practical...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Roman Gold Medallions: Or Multiple Solidi of the Late Empire Roman gold medallions have come down to us from antiquity in much smaller number than the silver and bronze medal lions. Nevertheless, it is quite probable that a considerable number were coined, but on account Of the intrinsic value Of the metal relatively few are now extant. It may be taken as a general principle that all Roman medallions are rare and, as Gnecchi says, they form the most élite and aristocratic portion Of a collector's cabinet. The following five pieces which are here presented are no exception to the rule above stated. The first four belong to the period Of Constantine the Great. Book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure

Download or read book The Late Roman Gold and Silver Coins from the Hoxne Treasure written by Peter S. W. Guest and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discovered in 1992, the Hoxne Treasure is perhaps the richest cache of gold and silver coins, jewellery and tableware from the entire Roman world. The core of this volume is the catalogue of the 15,000 late 4th- and early 5th-century gold and silver coins, together with an in-depth discussion of the production and supply of late Roman coinage. Hoxne's silver coins are particularly interesting, and the book also contains ground-breaking discussions of the silver content of Roman currency as well as of the peculiarly British phenomena of coin clipping and copying. The value of the Hoxne Treasure in shedding light on an otherwise dark period of British history also calls for a broader, non-numismatic perspective, and the volume includes an important chapter dealing with the social significance of precious metals in the later Roman empire, particularly their role in the gift-exchange networks that defined and maintained late Roman imperial society.

Book excerpt: This impressive gold sampler of Roman coins is the result of many years of careful selection, with beautiful examples of Aurei and Solidi dating from the late Republic through to the later Roman Empire. It has been put together with a very keen eye for both quality and rarity, as well as a real enthusiasm for the historical background to the individuals represented on the coins. Thus, the building of a magnificent gallery of portraits of emperors and empresses was an important aim. Aside from the high state of preservation of many of the coins, there are a significant number of rare varieties and reverse types included in the gold sampler.

This turbulent period, during which the Empire came close to total collapse and disintegration, witnessed great changes in the Imperial coinage including unprecedented debasement and the beginning of the decentralization of the mint system.

The metal of each specimen is given, and its size in inches and tenths. The weight of all examples in gold and silver is stated in English grains. Tables for converting grains into grammes, and inches into millimetres, as well as into the measures of Mionnet's scale, are given at the end of the volume (pp. 152-154). A table of dates and titles also there given (pp. 131-151) will enable the reader to find the year or period to which each medallion may be ascribed. Every medallion of interest is figured in the plates, which are executed by the Autotype mechanical process from casts in plaster, except in the case of the finest specimens, which are from drawings by Miss Godsall. The work has been drawn up under my direction by Mr. Herbert A. Grueber, Assistant in the Department of Coins and Medals. In the revision I have had the valuable aid of Mr. Head, Assistant Keeper, and Mr. Gardner, Assistant in the same Department.
