Book Introductions and Movement of Two Penaeid Shrimp Species in Asia and the Pacific

Download or read book Introductions and Movement of Two Penaeid Shrimp Species in Asia and the Pacific written by Mathew Briggs and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2005 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both Penaeus vannamei and P. stylirostris are introduced species in Asia and the Pacific. They have now become important commercial shrimp species in many countries in Asia. The main reason behind the importation of P. vannamei to Asia has been the perceived poor performance, slow growth rate and disease susceptibility of the major indigenous cultured shrimp species, P. chinensis in China and P. monodon virtually everywhere else. However, for many reasons, particularly with the evidence of the introduction of exotic viruses to the region, there has been caution on the part of many Asian governments for the introduction of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris. Nevertheless, this caution has not been demonstrated by the private sector, which has been bringing stocks of illegal and often disease carrying P. vannamei into Asia from many locations, as well as moving infected stocks within Asia. The commercial success of these introductions, despite disease problems, has allowed the development of substantial culture industries for these alien penaeids within Asia, particularly in China and Thailand. One effect of this is that it is rapidly becoming difficult to control the importation and development of this new industry. This report attempts to gather all of the currently available data on the extent of P. vannamei and P. stylirostris importation and culture in Asia, its potential problems and benefits, and in this way to serve as a source document from which to investigate further means by which control over this issue might be re-established. Recommendations aimed at controlling the importation, testing and culture of these species have been made for all levels and are included in this report.--Publisher's description.

Download or read book Outputs and activities of FAO Project FMM RAS 298 MUL and summary of FAO s recent work on antimicrobial resistance in aquaculture written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the implementation activities and results of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Project FMM/RAS/298/MUL: Strengthening capacities, policies, and national action plans on prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials in fisheries. The objectives of this project were to develop and/or enhance the knowledge, skills and capacity of the participating Competent Authorities on fisheries and aquaculture, as well as to assist them in the development and implementation of policies and national action plans (NAPs) on the prudent and responsible use of antimicrobials. The project enhanced the capacities of national Competent Authority (technical specialists, inspection and laboratory staff) to enable productive engagement with other lead agencies (e.g. the World Health Organization [WHO], national agriculture, food safety and animal health authorities), particularly with respect to their aquaculture and fish food safety component contributions to the NAP and the integration of the aquatic sector within the One Health framework. The report also briefly summarizes the recent actions and activities taken by FAO related to AMR in aquaculture since the completion of this project, including awareness raising targeting policymakers and aquaculture stakeholders, relevant publications, candidate reference centers and other ongoing projects to date.

Book Report of the FAO Expert Working Group Meeting Scoping Exercise to Increase the Understanding of Risks of Antimicrobial Resistance AMR in Aquaculture Palermo Italy 26 29 November 2018

Download or read book Report of the FAO Expert Working Group Meeting Scoping Exercise to Increase the Understanding of Risks of Antimicrobial Resistance AMR in Aquaculture Palermo Italy 26 29 November 2018 written by Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 2020-02-18 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents the results of an FAO Expert Working Group Meeting “Scoping exercise to increase the understanding of risks of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in aquaculture”. The meeting was attended by 14 experts from nine countries, representing intergovernmental organizations, academia, research institutions and the private sector. A risk profiling exercise was conducted on two bacterial pathogen groups (Streptococcus spp. and Vibrio parahaemolyticus) selected based on their importance to fish health and public health. Both bacterial agents affect tilapia, the second largest species group produced in aquaculture globally, which contributes significantly to global food and nutrition security. The risk profiling exercise for the two bacterial pathogens revealed that in both cases, the AMR risks posed by these pathogens were likely to be low and thus conducting a full risk assessment was not recommended. The risk profiling outlined in Codex Alimentarius was used as guidance, but it was recommended to review and adapt it as appropriate for aquatic AMR risk assessment. The Expert Group agreed to develop a project proposal to contribute to a multisectoral project "Towards reducing aquaculture-based AMR through a cross-sectoral approach". The project concept note will include investigation on two bacterial agents important to both animal and human health, namely: Streptococcus spp. and mesophilic aeromonads.

Book The OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Health Bergen Norway 9 12 October 2006

Download or read book The OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Health Bergen Norway 9 12 October 2006 written by Betty Dodet and published by S. Karger AG (Switzerland). This book was released on 2007 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing industries globally; its production volume currently represents over 40% of all fisheries and within a few years will surpass that of traditional fisheries. New species and methodologies contribute to the fact that new emerging diseases are increasingly being discovered within this field, and aquatic animal welfare issues are only just beginning to be considered. This OIE Global Conference on Aquatic Animal Health was an opportunity for the OIE and its Member Countries to help build a framework for improved involvement and cooperation between the authorities (Veterinary and Fish Health, Fisheries and Environment), the scientific community and the private sector on aquatic animal health and welfare; help clarify the roles and responsibilities of all stakeholders in the process of early disease detection, rapid response and reporting; help increase aquatic animal health emergency response capabilities; exchange information on emerging diseases and animal welfare issues; help develop a science-based approach to the management of aquatic animal health and welfare; and present the valuable experience gained in the past few years. Following the presentations and discussions, recommendations were developed to better define roles and responsibilities and to assist in the evaluation and improvement of the current standards and guidelines for better control of infectious aquatic animal health, and the preparedness of countries for aquatic animal disease emergencies.
