While his photos were shown at the Paris World Fair of 1900, Shiras--also a lawyer and politician--did not consider himself an artist; his goal was, above all, to document wildlife from the pre-environmental perspective to which he dedicated his life. In 1893, Shiras perfected the procedure of nocturnal flash photography in various regions of the US and Canada. It was in contact with hunters--and also with Native American guides or trappers--that he became initiated in the ways of wildlife, eventually "exchanging the rifle for the camera," as he himself put it. Despite his aesthetic innocence, Shiras succeeded in capturing the first night-time wildlife photos ever created, thanks to both his use of flash photography and camera-trap equipment. This gorgeous hardcover compiles his prescient nocturnal photography. George Shiras III (1859-1942) was born in Allegheny, Pennsylvania. He served as a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives in 1889 and 1890 and was elected to the 58th Congress. After his time in Congress, Shiras became engaged in biological research and wildlife photography; he was a member of the Boone and Crockett Club, a conservation organization founded by Theodore Roosevelt. In 1935, he published a two-volume set of over 960 of his wildlife photographs with the National Geographic Society.

Scanned from the original plates, with scratches and other flaws painstakingly removed, these oversized reproductions reveal the war in uncanny and previously unseen clarity. Also startling are the unfamiliar scenes selected by De Keyzer and elucidated by historian David Van Reybrouck: staged scenes of men in training (and of children imitating them), dramatic industrial photographs, landscapes of astonishing destruction, pictures of African colonial troops on the Western front, and postmortem portraits of thirteen Belgian soldiers killed in battle on the second day of the war. A quarter of the photographs in this book are in color, made with the autochrome process. The book includes a preface by Geoff Dyer, who refers to "the extraordinary power and surprise of this hoard of photographs" and discusses the disconcerting temporal effects of seeing such unusual pictures of a historical event we strongly associate with entirely different imagery.

In 1843 she turned to her friend Sir John Herschel's recently discovered cyanotype process to publish her growing collection of native seaweeds--a daring way to introduce photography into book illustration. At regular intervals over the next decade, Atkins printed and issued these bracingly modern, deeply-hued photograms to her "botanical friends" in the form of hand-stitched fascicles of a book she entitled Photographs of British Algæ: Cyanotype Impressions . The fi rst book to be illustrated by photography and the earliest sustained application of photography to science, British Algæ is a landmark in the histories of publishing and photography. Of the nearly two dozen substantially complete or partial copies known to exist, each is distinct in its appearance and often in its number and arrange- ment of plates. The set of 13 parts she gave to Sir John Herschel--now in the Spencer Collection of The New York Public Library--is especially important and was carefully preserved by generations of the Herschel family exactly as Sir John received it. This sumptuous facsimile edition reproduces the recto and verso of each plate, presenting the work as its creator intended: as bound volumes to lingered over, studied and admired, page by extraordinary page.
