Download or read book The Special Service Worship Architect written by Constance M. Cherry and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes the principles found in Constance Cherry's successful The Worship Architect--in which she provided dynamic blueprints for designing worship services--and applies them to special services in the life of the church. Cherry, a worship professor and practitioner, offers theological reflection, practical guidance, and suggested resources to help worship leaders and ministry students in training to create meaningful special services related to the sacraments, life passages, and other occasions. Cherry sets forth a process concerning worship design for special services and demonstrates how this process is conducive to virtually any style of worship practiced today in a myriad of Christian communities. She includes a model order for each service type, including weddings, funerals, baptisms, child dedications, Holy Communion, and more. The book not only explains what leaders do in order to preside at special services and how to do it, but also why they make certain choices. Each chapter includes discussion questions, practical exercises, and a basic glossary.
Download or read book Plants Don t Drink Coffee written by Unai Elorriaga and published by Archipelago. This book was released on 2011-10-07 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Four stories narrated from four different perspectives crisscross throughout this poignant and playful novel. Young Tomas – who wants above all else to be intelligent – embarks upon a dizzying search for a rare blue dragonfly, of which he believes there are only nine or ten in the world (and therefore probably only two or three in his town). Drawing us into the channels of his mercurial mind, skipping through misadventures and stumbling upon a host of small wonders, we are introduced to three generations of his motley family tree and accompany them on their odd quests. From the moonlit creation of a rugby field on a golf course, to the unearthing of the escapades of his anarchist grandfather, a celebrated carpenter, the medley of tales flips on their heads standard assumptions about age, wisdom, sensibility, and truth, inviting us to open our eyes to the bounty of tiny marvels that make up our world.
Download or read book The Architecture of Context and Context Sensitivity written by Tadeusz Ciecierski and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses foundational issues of context-dependence and indexicality, which are at the center of the current debate within the philosophy of language. Topics include the scope of context-dependency, the nature of content and the character of input data of cognitive processes relevant for the interpretation of utterances. There's also coverage of the role of beliefs and intentions as contextual factors, as well as the validity of arguments in context-sensitive languages. The contributions consider foundational issues regarding context-sensitivity from three different, yet related, perspectives on the phenomenon of context-dependence: representational, structural, and functional. The contributors not only address the representational, structural and/or functional problems separately but also study their mutual connections, thus furthering the debate and bringing competing approaches closer to unification and consensus. This text appeals to students and researchers within the field. This is a very useful collection of essays devoted to the roles of context in the study of language. Its essays provide a useful overview of the current debates on this topic, and they put forth novel contributions that will undoubtedly be of relevance for the development of all areas in philosophy and linguistics interested in the notion of context. Book excerpt: Opening Proverb There is an African proverb that says, "A cockroach knows how to sing and dance, but it is the hen that prevents it from performing its art during the day." What does this mean? Well, in many African villages it is not uncommon to see a hungry hen running around pecking at the ground for its meal of cockroaches scurrying about. But, without the hindrance of its enemy, the hen, the cockroach would be free to demonstrate all that it´s skilled to do. My question is if cockroaches can dance in the face of danger, why can´t you? What hen, giant, king or obstacle is holding you from being all that you´re created for? Why did you stop using your God given talents and gifts in the service of his kingdom? Who has turned you against yourself, emasculated you and frozen your potentials? Now is the time to declare to that mountain to be removed and be cast into the sea (Matt 17:20); To that tumultuous and raging situation, peace be still (Mark 4:39) to that giant " I am well able to overcome you (Numbers 13:30); to that king Nebuchadnezzar terrorizing your life "My God is able to deliver me (Daniel 3:17) and to that circumstance, like Jesus "I will rise again (Matt 27:63) For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock. And now shall mine head be lifted up above mine enemies round about me: therefore will I offer in his tabernacle sacrifices of joy; I will sing, yea, I will sing praises unto the LORD (PSALM 27:5- 6). If cockroaches can dance in the face of its enemy, I can too. In the Bible gifts and talents are not just given to some but to all. We are called to use those gifts in service of others. They are instruments and tools that help build the kingdom of God on earth. According to Bishop T D Jakes, senior pastor of the Potter´s House, the gift, talent, and abilities God gave you is your key to success. They were not given to you to be put on display, to be wasted, to be hidden or denied out of a false sense of religious humility but, to be poured out, to be used and invested. Apostle Paul in the book of Romans succinctly admonishes us in these words, "Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: if prophecy, in proportion to our faith; if service, in our serving; the one who teaches, in his teaching; the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness" (Roman 12:6-8 New King James Version). Do not forget that God does not give equal gifts or talents but equal opportunity for investment; we don´t have equal gifts and talents but the same twenty-four hours in a day to utilize it, and there is the enemy, like the hen, walking about, seeking to devour those who would dare use their gift. Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. (1 Peter 5:8, NKJV) In this proverb, if singing and dancing represent the gifts that are given by God to every person, then we all can "sing and dance" Hence the Bible declared that He gave gifts to all men. To my greatest chagrin, there doesn´t seem to be a whole lot of singing and dancing going on! Why? What hen do you think is trying to devour you and your gift? Each chapter in this book is dedicated to a "hen" that may be keeping you from singing and dancing, performing your art, or becoming all that God created you to be. We´ll call them "hen-drances." Even before the foundation of the earth God wrote history, and it is known as "His-story" because only God, His son and His Spirit can give an accurate account and story of my life. In His-story, He included you, me, and every other person throughout all of time. Do you see why everyone else that attempts to tell your story becomes

Book excerpt: Women continue to be extremely under-represented in the architectural profession. Despite equal numbers of male and female students entering architectural studies, there is at least 17-25% attrition of female students and not all remaining become practicing architects. In both the academic and the professional fields of architecture, positions of power and authority are almost entirely male, and as such, the profession is defined by a heterosexual, Eurasian male perspective. This book argues that it is vital for all architectural students and practitioners to be exposed to a diversity of contemporary architectural practices, as this might provide a first step into broadening awareness and transforming architectural engagement. It considers the relationships between feminist methodologies and the various approaches toward design and their impact upon our understanding and relationship to the built environment. In doing so, this collection challenges two conventional ideas: firstly, the definition of architecture and secondly, what constitutes a feminist practice. This collection of up-and-coming female architects and designers use a wide range of local and global examples of their work to question different aspects of these two conventional ideas. While focusing on feminist perspectives, the book offers insights into many different issues, concerns and interpretations of architecture, proposing through these types of engagement, architecture can become more culturally, politically and environmentally relevant. This 'next generation' of architects claim feminism as their own and through doing so, help define what feminism means and how it is evolving in the 21st century.
