Book excerpt: This collection contains three adventurous historical romances set in 16th-century Italy. The main character is Tizzo, a master swordsman, known as "Firebrand" because of his flaming red hair and flame-blue eyes. Frederick Schiller Faust (1892-1944) was an American author known primarily for his thoughtful and literary Westerns under the pen name Max Brand. Prolific in many genres he wrote historical novels, detective mysteries, pulp fiction stories and many more. His love for mythology was a constant source of inspiration for his fiction, and it has been speculated that these classical influences accounted in some part for his success as a popular writer. Many of his stories would later inspire films.

Book excerpt: William Laud, Archbishop of Canterbury (1633-45), remains one of the most controversial figures in British ecclesiastical and political history. His rise to prominence under Charles I, his contribution to the framing and implementation of highly contentious religious policies, and his subsequent and catastrophic downfall remain central to our understanding of the coming of civil war. This book presents Scotland as a case study for a fresh interpretation of Laud, his career and his working partnership with Charles I. This approach throws much needed light on the depth of Laud's engagement in kirk affairs and reveals the real reasons for his ostensible abandonment by the king in 1641, enabling a better understanding of Anglo-Scottish politics in the early Long Parliament as well as developments connected to religion and the 'British Problem'. Importantly, the book demonstrates that Laud's involvement in Scotland was broadly consistent with, although differing in detail from, his approach in England and Ireland. It represents a major contribution to key debates on the nature of religion and politics in the 1630s and early 1640s and to current thinking on the role of Charles I and William Laud in the formulation of ecclesiastical policy, the 'British problem', and the causes of the British Civil Wars.

The Church of the Lord Jesus, which is not a building but a people stong and mighty, will become a vast, irrepressible force on th earth; raising the banner of His Conquest and announcing the Day of the Lord. They will determine the state of nations and promote the Agenda of the Kingdom in all spheres of human endeavors. They are powerful beyond measure, for through them, the Lord will raise the mountain of His house, over every other mountain. Hallelujah! This glorious day is already here amongst us and we are most blessed to be this people, this generation set in the context of the Finish Line. We are forerunners of the move of God, going before Him and preparing the peoples. Our role is significant, our strategy is covert and our results are staggering. Since we are carried on the wings of the Spirit, we do not trust in the arm of flesh. We are the swords sharpened for the battle, and more than conquerors, walking in the victories of Christ.

Download or read book Andrew Jackson written by Sean Wilentz and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2007-04-01 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The towering figure who remade American politics—the champion of the ordinary citizen and the scourge of entrenched privilege "It is rare that historians manage both Wilentz's deep interpretation and lively narrative." - Publishers Weekly The Founding Fathers espoused a republican government, but they were distrustful of the common people, having designed a constitutional system that would temper popular passions. But as the revolutionary generation passed from the scene in the 1820s, a new movement, based on the principle of broader democracy, gathered force and united behind Andrew Jackson, the charismatic general who had defeated the British at New Orleans and who embodied the hopes of ordinary Americans. Raising his voice against the artificial inequalities fostered by birth, station, monied power, and political privilege, Jackson brought American politics into a new age. Sean Wilentz, one of America's leading historians of the nineteenth century, recounts the fiery career of this larger-than-life figure, a man whose high ideals were matched in equal measure by his failures and moral blind spots, a man who is remembered for the accomplishments of his eight years in office and for the bitter enemies he made. It was in Jackson's time that the great conflicts of American politics—urban versus rural, federal versus state, free versus slave—crystallized, and Jackson was not shy about taking a vigorous stand. It was under Jackson that modern American politics began, and his legacy continues to inform our debates to the present day.
