Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides recommendations on how to meet the requirements for achieving and maintaining fire safety in the management and operation of a nuclear power plant throughout its lifetime, covering topics which include fire prevention, control of combustible materials and ignition sources, manual fire fighting, training and quality assurance. The requirements for fire safety are established in Safety Standards Series No. NS-R-2, Safety of Nuclear Power Plants: Operation (2000). The present publication is intended for plant managers, operators, safety assessors and regulators. Recommendations are made concerning: organization and responsibilities; periodic updating of the fire hazard analysis; modifications relating to fire safety; inspection, maintenance and testing of fire safety features; records and documentation; adoption of a formal policy for fire safety; and specific responsibilities and authorities for staff in relation to fire safety.

Book Preparation of Fire Hazard Analyses for Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Preparation of Fire Hazard Analyses for Nuclear Power Plants written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Report discusses the ways of preparing a fire hazard analysis for a nuclear power plant. A comprehensive fire hazard analysis determines the adequacy of the fire protection measures (e.g. administrative controls, operator actions and passive fire protection components) and the necessary fixed fire protection systems. The publication will be useful to designers of new plants as well as operators of existing plants when preparing or updating a fire hazard analysis.

  • Pages : 40 pages

Download or read book Nuclear Safety written by Mark Gaffigan and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2009-02 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a 1975 fire at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama threatened the unit¿s ability to shut down safely, the Nuclear Regulatory Comm. (NRC) issued prescriptive fire safety rules for commercial nuclear units. However, nuclear units with different designs and different ages have had difficulty meeting these rules and have sought exemptions to them. In 2004, NRC began to encourage the nation¿s 104 nuclear units to transition to a less prescriptive, risk-informed approach that will analyze the fire risks of individual nuclear units. This report examines: (1) the number and causes of fire incidents at nuclear units since 1995; (2) compliance with NRC fire safety regulations; and (3) the transition to the new approach. Includes recommendations. Illustrations.

Download or read book Nuclear Regulatory Commission written by U.s. Government Accountability Office and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-04 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why GAO Did This StudyIn 1975, a fire at a nuclear power plant damaged critical control cables and hampered operators' ability to monitor the status of the plant's reactor. NRC subsequently issued deterministic fire safety regulations for plants to follow, but differences in plant design, coupled with changes in NRC guidance, made it difficult for most plants to meet the regulations without seeking numerous exemptions. In 2004, NRC issued a regulation permitting plants to voluntarily transition to risk-informed fire protection requirements. This new approach mirrors NRC's efforts to adopt a more risk-informed regulatory approach to nuclear safety in general. In 2008, GAO reported on three key fire safety issues and recommended NRC take action to address them.GAO was asked to examine (1) NRC's progress in resolving the long-standing fire safety issues raised in GAO's 2008 report at plants remaining under the deterministic approach and at those plants transitioning to the risk-informed approach; (2) the potential benefits of transitioning to a risk-informed approach and the basis for NRC's decision to make adoption of this approach voluntary; and (3) challenges, if any, in efforts to transition to a risk-informed approach in regulating fire safety. GAO reviewed documents; analyzed responses from operators at a nonprobability sample of 12 nuclear plants and from nine consultants or academic experts on fire safety issues and risk-informed regulations; and interviewed NRC, industry, and public interest group"

Download or read book Nuclear Power Plant Fire Protection Research Program written by U.s. Nuclear Regulation Comion and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program plan for nuclear power plant fire protection research has been presented in this report. The principal objective of the program is to create a data base that would reduce the uncertainties in fire probabilistic risk assessment of plants. A three-pronged approach of characterization of potential fires, determination of the ensuing environment, and determination of failure thresholds of safetyrelated equipment in that environment is described. The techniques are to be applied to estimating the fire safety margin, available in a control room.

Book Protection Against Internal and External Hazards in the Operation of Nuclear Power Plants

Download or read book Protection Against Internal and External Hazards in the Operation of Nuclear Power Plants written by IAEA and published by International Atomic Energy Agency. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Safety Guide provides specific recommendations on protection against internal and external hazards in the operation of nuclear power plants. It provides new or updated recommendations derived from enhanced understanding of operational aspects of hazards and combinations of hazards. Operating experience gained from incidents and accidents in nuclear power plants around the world has demonstrated that fire can be an important risk contributor in many Member States. However, there are other internal and external hazards that have also to be considered in the design and operation of nuclear power plants. This Safety Guide supersedes and expands the scope of lAEA Safety Standards Series No. NS- G-2. 1, Fire Safety in the Operation of Nuclear Power Plants, to include recommendations on these other hazards.
