Book Collective Modes in Inhomogeneous Plasmas

Download or read book Collective Modes in Inhomogeneous Plasmas written by Jan Weiland and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collective Modes in Inhomogeneous Plasmas: Kinetic and Advanced Fluid Theory presents the collective drift and MHD-type modes in inhomogeneous plasmas from the point of view of two-fluid and kinetic theory. Written by an internationally respected plasma transport theoretician, this introductory monograph emphasizes the description of the plasma rather than the geometry to present a more general approach to a large class of plasma problems. Starting with generalized fluid equations for low frequency phenomena, the author shows how drift waves and MHD-type modes can arise from the effects of inhomogeneities in the plasma. The kinetic description is then presented to reveal a host of phenomena ranging from vortex modes and finite Larmor radius effects to trapped and fast particle instabilities, transport, diffusion, and other advanced fluid effects. Theoretical and computational plasma physicists modeling confined plasmas will find this illustrated book a very valuable addition to their collection.

Book Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Plasma Turbulence

Download or read book Energy Transfer and Dissipation in Plasma Turbulence written by Yan Yang and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book revisits the long-standing puzzle of cross-scale energy transfer and dissipation in plasma turbulence and introduces new perspectives based on both magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) and Vlasov models. The classical energy cascade scenario is key in explaining the heating of corona and solar wind. By employing a high-resolution hybrid (compact finite difference & WENO) scheme, the book studies the features of compressible MHD cascade in detail, for example, in order to approximate a real plasma cascade as “Kolmogorov-like” and to understand features that go beyond the usual simplified theories based on incompressible models. When approaching kinetic scales where plasma effects must be considered, it uses an elementary analysis of the Vlasov–Maxwell equations to help identify the channels through which energy transfer must be dissipated. In addition, it shows that the pressure–strain interaction is of great significance in producing internal energy. This analysis, in contrast to many other recent studies, does not make assumptions about wave-modes, instability or other specific mechanisms responsible for the dynamics – the results are direct consequences of the Vlasov–Maxwell system of equations. This is an important step toward understanding dissipation in turbulent collisionless plasma in space and astrophysics.

Book Fluid Formalism for Collisionless Magnetized Plasmas

Download or read book Fluid Formalism for Collisionless Magnetized Plasmas written by Jesus J. Ramos and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive analysis of the finite-Larmor-radius (FLR) fluid moment equations for collisionless magnetized plasmas is presented. It is based on perturbative but otherwise general solutions for the second and third rank fluid moments (the stress and stress flux tensors) with closure conditions on the fourth rank moment. The single expansion parameter is the ratio between the gyroradius of the plasma species under consideration and any other characteristic length, which is assumed to be small but finite in a magnetized medium. This formalism allows a complete account of the gyroviscous stress, the pressure anisotropy and the anisotropic heat fluxes, and is valid for arbitrary magnetic geometry, arbitrary plasma pressure and fully electromagnetic nonlinear dynamics. As the result, very general yet notably compact perturbative systems of FLR collisionless fluid equations, applicable to either fast (magnetohydrodynamic) or slow (diamagnetic) motions, are obtained.

Book Introduction to Plasma Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Plasma Physics written by R.J Goldston and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-14 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to Plasma Physics is the standard text for an introductory lecture course on plasma physics. The text’s six sections lead readers systematically and comprehensively through the fundamentals of modern plasma physics. Sections on single-particle motion, plasmas as fluids, and collisional processes in plasmas lay the groundwork for a thorough understanding of the subject. The authors take care to place the material in its historical context for a rich understanding of the ideas presented. They also emphasize the importance of medical imaging in radiotherapy, providing a logical link to more advanced works in the area. The text includes problems, tables, and illustrations as well as a thorough index and a complete list of references.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Instabilities in a Confined Plasma is entirely devoted to a theoretical exposition of the subject of plasma instabilities in confined systems. The book is an important contribution to the study of plasma instabilities, not only in fusion devices such as the Tokamak but also in astrophysical phenomena. It covers toroidal confinement systems, internal MHD modes, small-scale MHD instabilities, MHD internal kink modes, MHD modes in collisionless and neoclassical regimes, drift-MHD modes, external kink modes, and Alfven eigenmodes.
