Book excerpt: This work presents a design approach that links fatigue resistance of cast steel component to permissible defect sizes. It is based on fractures mechanics, is in line with experiences of the last 60 years and validated by extensive experimental as well as numerical investigations on different scales and under consideration of real casting defects. By following established assessment methods, the design concept is adapted to practical building applications.

Book Residual Stress Analysis on Welded Joints by Means of Numerical Simulation and Experiments

Download or read book Residual Stress Analysis on Welded Joints by Means of Numerical Simulation and Experiments written by Paolo Ferro and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to quantify residual stresses induced by welding processes through experimentation or numerical simulation has become, today more than ever, of strategic importance in the context of their application to advanced design. This is an ongoing challenge that commenced many years ago. Recent design criteria endeavour to quantify the effect of residual stresses on fatigue strength of welded joints to allow a more efficient use of materials and a greater reliability of welded structures. The aim of the present book is contributing to these aspects of design through a collection of case-studies that illustrate both standard and advanced experimental and numerical methodologies used to assess the residual stress field in welded joints. The work is intended to be of assistance to designers, industrial engineers and academics who want to deepen their knowledge of this challenging topic.

Book Finite Element Modelling of Shot Peening and Strengthening Mechanism Analysis

Download or read book Finite Element Modelling of Shot Peening and Strengthening Mechanism Analysis written by Cheng Wang and published by Scientific Research Publishing, Inc. USA. This book was released on 2023-08-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The service performance and life of metal parts are closely related to the surface integrity of materials. Shot peening (SP) is a well-known surface strengthening technique and is widely used for the improvement of the component surface integrity in industrial fields, such as aerospace, vehicle, construction machinery and etc. With the rapid development of science and technology, numerous new SP techniques have been developed from the conventional mechanical shot peening, such as the laser shock peening (LSP), ultrasonic shot peening (USP),surface mechanical attrition treatment (SMAT) and etc. Different from the other mechanical processing techniques, a considerable number of process parameters have an influence on the surface strengthening effects of shot-peened metal parts. Therefore, the selection of the SP process parameters with respect to the different metal parts has always been a challenge. With the rapid development of the computer technology, the numerical simulation has increasingly attracted the more and more attentions both from the academy and the industry. Compared to the experimental investigations, the numerical simulations are not only timesaving and economical, but also can provide an insight into the surface strengthening mechanisms of SP.

Book A Finite Element Model for Residual Stress in Repair Welds

Download or read book A Finite Element Model for Residual Stress in Repair Welds written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper describes a three-dimensional finite element model for calculation of the residual stress distribution caused by repair welding. Special user subroutines were developed to simulate the continuous deposition of filler metal during welding. The model was then tested by simulating the residual stress/strain field of a FeAl weld overlay clad on a 2 1/4Cr-1 Mo steel plate, for which neutron diffraction measurement data of the residual strain field were available. It is shown that the calculated residual stress distribution was consistent with that determined with neutron diffraction. High tensile residual stresses in both the longitudinal and transverse directions were observed around the weld toe at the end of the weld. The strong spatial dependency of the residual stresses in the region around the weld demonstrates that the common two-dimensional cross-section finite element models should not be used for repair welding analysis.

Book Finite Element Modeling of Residual Stress Formation in Polycarbonate Welds

Download or read book Finite Element Modeling of Residual Stress Formation in Polycarbonate Welds written by Kittichai Sojiphan and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Formation of residual stresses during hot plate welding and other plastic welding processes can have detrimental effects on the joint quality under static and dynamic loading as well as reduce the corrosion resistance of the joints. Therefore, it is important to measure and predict residual stress level to prevent premature failures. Uncoupled finite element thermal analysis and viscoelastic stress-strain analysis were used to calculate the temperature distribution and history in the parts and thermal and residual stress formation during welding. Thermal properties and viscoelastic relaxation modulus of polycarbonate were compiled from the literature to build the material model for the finite element simulation. Residual stress levels in hot plate polycarbonate welds were computed for different hot plate temperatures and heating times. It was found that shorter heating times resulted in faster cooling rates and higher residual stress. The model was also used to calculate residual stresses in through transmission infrared and vibration welding of polycarbonate. The predicted residual stress levels and distributions were in good agreement with published experimental results for hot plate and through transmission infrared welding. Thus, finite element modeling is an effective way for predicting residual stress for a wide range of plastic welding method.
