Book FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR SUBSURFACE HYDROLOGY USING A MIXED EXPLICIT IMPLICIT SCHEME

Download or read book FINITE ELEMENT METHOD FOR SUBSURFACE HYDROLOGY USING A MIXED EXPLICIT IMPLICIT SCHEME written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mixed explicit-implicit Galerkin finite element method developed previously by the authors is shown to be ideally suited for a wide class of problems arising in subsurface hydrology. These problems include confined saturated flow, unconfined flaw under free surface conditions subject to the Dupuit assumption, flow in aquifers which are partly confined and partly unconfined, axisymmetric flow to a well with storage, and flow in saturated-unsaturated soils. A single computer program, entitled FLUMP, can now handle all of these problems. The mixed explicit-implicit solution strategy employed in the program insures a high level of accuracy and computation efficiency in most cases. It eliminates many of the difficulties that groundwater hydrologists have been encountering in trying to simulate extensive aquifer systems by finite elements. Some of the outstanding features of this solution strategy include an automatic control of time step size, reclassification of nodes from explicit to implicit during execution, automatic adjustment of the implicit time weighting factor, and the treatment of boundary conditions and source terms as arbitrary functions of time of the state of the system. Five examples are presented to demonstrate the versatility and power of this new approach. A purely physical derivation of the finite element equations which does not rely on the Galerkin formalism is also included in one of the appendices.

Book Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology

Download or read book Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology written by George F. Pinder and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-09-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finite Element Simulation in Surface and Subsurface Hydrology provides an introduction to the finite element method and how the method is applied to problems in surface and subsurface hydrology. The book presents the basic concepts of the numerical methods and the finite element approach; applications to problems on groundwater flow and mass and energy transport; and applications to problems that involve surface water dynamics. Computational methods for the solution of differential equations; classification of partial differential equations; finite difference and weighted residual integral techniques; and The Galerkin finite element method are discussed as well. The text will be of value to engineers, hydrologists, and students in the field of engineering.

Book Finite Elements in Water Resources

Download or read book Finite Elements in Water Resources written by K.-P. Holz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings contain the papers presented at the Fourth International Conference on Finite Elements in Water Resources, held in June, 1982, at the University of Hannover, Federal Re public of Germany. This Conference continued the successful series of previous conferences held at Princeton University in 1976, at Imperial College in 1978, and at the University of Mississippi in 1980. Since Finite Elements have proved to be a powerful means for analysing water resource problems, the principal objective of the Conference was to provide an exchange of experiences in practical applications of the finite element method and to establish a forum for discussion regarding accuracy, economy, limitations and improvements. Related discretization methods were included within the scope of the Conference. New develop ments in numerical and computational techniques, basic mathe matical formulations, and soft- and hardware aspects were considered to be equally important topics for an exchange of ideas between both theoretically and practically oriented re searchers. The Conference Organizing Committee is very grateful to the many distinguished scientists who attended the Conference, and for their contributions towards the proceedings. This collection of papers in being made available to a wider audience of en gineers and scientists by CML Publications in Southampton, U.K.

  • Pages : 514 pages

Download or read book Hydrogeology written by Alain Dassargues and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-09-03 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text combines the science and engineering of hydrogeology in an accessible, innovative style. As well as providing physical descriptions and characterisations of hydrogeological processes, it also sets out the corresponding mathematical equations for groundwater flow and solute/heat transport calculations. And, within this, the methodological and conceptual aspects for flow and contaminant transport modelling are discussed in detail. This comprehensive analysis forms the ideal textbook for graduate and undergraduate students interested in groundwater resources and engineering, and indeed its analyses can apply to researchers and professionals involved in the area.

Book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock

Download or read book Sealing of Boreholes and Underground Excavations in Rock written by K. Fuenkajorn and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sealing of boreholes and underground excavations has not received much engineering attention until fairly recently. The growing awareness of and sensitivity to environmental concerns of the technical community as well as of the public at large has resulted in an increasing recognition of the fact that these geological penetrations may have an environmental impact. The issue of possible contamination resulting from migration along boreholes, adits, shafts or tunnels unquestionably has been raised most forcefully with in the context of nuclear waste disposal. Several nuclear waste disposal programs, notably the Civilian and the Defence programs of the US De partment of Energy, the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Canadian and Swedish radioactive waste disposal programs have conducted major research efforts aimed at developing adequate seal designs for penet rations in host rock formations for high-level nuclear waste repositories. While a considerable data base has been gathered over the last two decades or so with regard to the performance of seals, most of the information is presented in research reports and widely scattered papers in journals and proceedings of conferences. Hence, the materials are not readily accessible to potential users such as designers, contractors or regulators who are not familiar with nuclear waste disposal programs.
