Book Financial Fitness for Life

Download or read book Financial Fitness for Life written by John E. Clow and published by Council for Economic Educat. This book was released on 2001 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing financial fitness requires developing a knowledge base and then applying it. This teacher guide and student workouts package contains 15 lessons from students at grades 3-5, divided into 4 theme areas of earning and income, saving, spending and borrowing, and managing money. The development of knowledge for use in the everyday life of students is a main goal of the lessons in this guide. Besides the fitness focus, the materials are based on the National Council on Economic Education's Voluntary National Content Standards for Economics. Assessment questions are provided at the end of each theme. Nine lessons in the guide are estimated to take one to two class periods, while the other six generally take between two to four class periods. The activities are categorized as those that are suitable for all students at grades 3-5 and those that may be challenging for some students at the 3-5 grade level. All the lessons focus on having students do various activities and think about or reflect upon their actions. The teacher guide provides a lesson description and background, lists equipment needed, and gives student objectives. It includes activity sheets and visuals for the lessons and cross training activities, an integral part of the curriculum. (Contains a language arts matrix, a mathematics matrix, an economics matrix, and a personal finance management guidelines matrix at the beginning of the guide.) (BT)

Book Teaching Economics in Troubled Times

Download or read book Teaching Economics in Troubled Times written by Mark C. Schug and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-03 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Great Recession of 2007-2010, Americans watched their retirement savings erode and the value of their homes decline while the unemployment rate increased and GDP sank. New demands emerged for unprecedented government intervention into the economy. While these changes have a dramatic impact on society at large, they also have serious implications for the content and teaching of economics. Teaching Economics in a Time of Unprecedented Change is a one-stop collection that helps pre- and in-service social studies teachers to foster an understanding of classic content as well as recent economic developments. Part I offers clear and teachable overviews of the nature of today’s complex economic crisis and the corollary changes in teaching economics that flow from revising and updating long-held economic assumptions. Part II provides both detailed best practices for teaching economics in the social studies classroom and frameworks for teaching economics within different contexts including personal finance, entrepreneurship, and history. Part III concludes with effective strategies for teaching at the elementary and secondary school levels based on current research on economic education. From advice on what every economics teacher should know, to tips for best education practices, to investigations into what research tells us about teaching economics, this collection provides a wealth of contextual background and teaching ideas for today’s economics and social studies educators. Book excerpt: This combination parenting and personal finance book helps parents teach their children key money skills--such as saving, spending, budgeting, investing, building credit, and donating--that they'll need to become financially secure adults. In this updated edition of Raising Financially Fit Kids, Joline Godfrey shares knowledge gleaned from two decades of preparing children and families for financial independence and stewardship, philanthropic effectiveness, and meaningful economic lives. At the heart of the book are three big ideas: • Financial education is not just about the money; it’s about building great families and raising self-confident kids who have the tools to realize their dreams. • Financial sustainability means living within one’s means and acquiring skills to create and manage human and financial capital. • Giving wisely is a global citizen’s responsibility. Designed for parents, grandparents, mentors, advisors, and educators, Raising Financially Fit Kids uses ten core money skills applied across five developmental life stages: children, tweens, middle schoolers, high schoolers, and twenty-somethings. Each stage includes age-appropriate activities that make financial fitness fun, from mall scavenger hunts to financial film festivals. In this global economic landscape, we all need financial fluency. Whether your child is five, fifteen, or twenty-five years old, it’s never too late to teach financial literacy. Raising Financially Fit Kids prepares your children for the complexities of living in a global economy and helps your family up your game from good to great.
