Book excerpt: A Filtered Life is the first comprehensive ethnographic account to explore how college students create and manage multiple identities on social media. Drawing on interviews and digital ethnographic data gleaned from popular social media platforms, the authors document and make visible routinized practices that are typically hidden and operating behind the scenes. They introduce the concept of "digital multiples," wherein students strategically present themselves differently across social media platforms. This requires both the copious production of content and the calculated development of an instantly recognizable aesthetic or brand. Taylor and Nichter examine key contradictions that emerged from student narratives, including presenting a self that is both authentic and highly edited, appearing upbeat even during emotionally difficult times, and exuding body positivity even when frustrated with how you look. Students struggled with this series of impossibilities; yet, they felt compelled to maintain a vibrant online presence. With its close-up portrayal of the social and embodied experiences of college students, A Filtered Life is ideal for students and scholars interested in youth studies, digital ethnography, communication, and new forms of media.

Book Noise Filtering for Big Data Analytics

Download or read book Noise Filtering for Big Data Analytics written by Souvik Bhattacharyya and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2022-06-21 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how to perform data de-noising, in large scale, with a satisfactory level of accuracy. Three main issues are considered. Firstly, how to eliminate the error propagation from one stage to next stages while developing a filtered model. Secondly, how to maintain the positional importance of data whilst purifying it. Finally, preservation of memory in the data is crucial to extract smart data from noisy big data. If, after the application of any form of smoothing or filtering, the memory of the corresponding data changes heavily, then the final data may lose some important information. This may lead to wrong or erroneous conclusions. But, when anticipating any loss of information due to smoothing or filtering, one cannot avoid the process of denoising as on the other hand any kind of analysis of big data in the presence of noise can be misleading. So, the entire process demands very careful execution with efficient and smart models in order to effectively deal with it.

Book Consumer Perceptions of Tap Water Bottled Water and Filtration Devices

Download or read book Consumer Perceptions of Tap Water Bottled Water and Filtration Devices written by E. Mackey and published by IWA Publishing. This book was released on 2004-04-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of this project were (1) to measure consumer satisfaction with tap water quality, (2) to investigate demographic trends in consumer satisfaction and consumption of tap water alternatives, (3) to identify the factors that cause consumers to purchase and use bottled water and POU/POEs, and (4) to develop a list of recommendations for water utilities that can improve consumer satisfaction and help bridge gaps between perception and reality. The following are highlights from the research project: Consumption rate of tap water alternatives is highly dependent on geographic location (20% usage rate in the Midwest vs. 80% on the West Coast). Tap water drinkers are more satisfied (20% on average) than tap water alternative drinkers concerning various aspects of tap water (e.g., overall quality, taste, appearance, smell, safety, healthiness). Tap water quality had limited influence on consumer satisfaction. The highest level of correlation (between satisfaction and water quality) was found to have an R2 - value of 34%-64% for hardness and total dissolved solids. Safety was the primary motivator for filtered water drinkers. Bottled water drinkers were divided between taste, safety, and healthiness.

Book Water Wastewater and Sludge Filtration

Download or read book Water Wastewater and Sludge Filtration written by C. Visvanathan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive and up-to-date account of filtration in solid-liquid separation processes, with a sharp focus on the influence of pro-cess variables on performance and specific applications is pre-sented in this volume. With contribu-tions from researchers with significant industrial experi-ence, as well as by senior academics, this publication fea-tures a deep bed filtration overview with informa-tion on mathematical modeling and application in wastewater treat-ment. Pre-treatment filtration techniques such as cartridge filters, pre-coat filters and micro screening are included. Membrane filtration processes to remove dis-solved and suspended solids for the recovery of valuable ma-terials and the provision of high quality water are covered. Sludge de-watering methods such as centrifuga-tion, and vacuum and pressure filtration are described. Application status data, tables, figures and diagrams are also included. This volume is of special interest to practicing engineers and technolo-gists dealing with treatment problems requiring filtration solu-tions and to graduate students in environmental engineering.
