Book As If By Chance

Download or read book As If By Chance written by Kevin Reed Donley and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2023-12-21 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age of print was begun by Johannes Gutenberg in 1440 in Mainz, Germany. His invention of the mechanized and mass production of print replaced the previous handwriting of the scribes and was a transformative achievement. It was both the product of and a catalyst for far-reaching intellectual, social, and political changes that began during the Renaissance and continued for centuries right up to the present. The age of electronic media was begun by Steve Jobs in 1985 in Cupertino, California. His integration of the elements of desktop publishing--personal computer, page-layout software, page-description language, and laser printer--replaced the previous photomechanical processes of printing and was a transformative achievement. It was both the product of and a catalyst for the intellectual, social, and political changes during the digital revolution that will extend for generations into the future. This book discusses these two bookends in the age of print. It follows the transitions and stages of innovation in printing between the fifteenth and twenty-first centuries and shows how the inventors responsible for this progress are bound together in a chain of revolutionary technical change called disruptive continuity. While the works of Gutenberg and Jobs are separated by more than five centuries, there are striking parallels and differences between these two innovations. They both sparked the quantitative expansion of literacy and the spread of knowledge around the world. However, the emergence of electronic publishing--especially in its present-day social media forms--has brought a vast increase in the consumption of information while also heralding a qualitative transformation that places the tools of wireless and mobile multimedia publishing into the hands of billions of people on earth. Much in the same way that there was a historical lag between Gutenberg's invention and the full impact of printing on the world, so too in our own time, the long-term societal consequences of electronic publishing have yet to be realized.

Book The 50th Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK Russ Winterbotham

Download or read book The 50th Golden Age of Science Fiction MEGAPACK Russ Winterbotham written by Russ Winterbotham and published by Wildside Press LLC. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Robert Winterbotham (1904-1971)—who wrote as both R.R. Winterbotham and Russ Winterbotham (as well as the pseudonyms “J. Harvey Bond” for mysteries and “Franklin Hadley”)—began publishing in the late 1920s, though his didn’t make his science fiction debut until 1935, when “The Star that Would not Behave” appeared in Astounding. He published prolifically in most of the top magazines of the day, before settling into an action-adventure niche. From the fiction magazines, he moved into comics (writing for Red Ryder), comic strips (he penned “Chris Welkin, Planeteer” from its start in 1951 into the 1960s), and Big Little books for the Whitman Publishing Company (he wrote at least 60, including the Maximo the Amazing Superman series). All the while, he maintained his full-time job as fiction editor for Scripps-Howard NEA news service. In those days, newspapers published fiction, and many had a weekly insert that included full-length novels. Although well regarded, his novels—which appeared under pseudonyms—failed to attract much fan attention, and he is largely forgotten today. Nevertheless, modern readers will enjoy his better-than-average writing and fun, action-adventure plots—often with clever twists. Included in this volume are: ORIDIN’S FORMULA THE MINUS WOMAN DEAD MAN’S PLANET THE THOUGHT-MEN OF MERCURY THE MONSTER THAT THREATENED THE UNIVERSE LONESOME HEARTS A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE THE WHISPERING SPHERES GENESIS! If you enjoy this volume, search your favorite ebook store for "Wildside Press MEGAPACK" to see the 400+ other entries in the series, covering science fiction, modern authors, mysteries, westerns, classics, adventure stories, and much, much more!

In this groundbreaking narrative, The Shadows of Empire explains (in the vein of The Silk Roads and Prisoners of Geography) how the world’s imperial legacies still shape our lives—as well as the thorniest issues we face today. For the first time in millennia we live without formal empires. But that doesn’t mean we don’t feel their presence rumbling through history. From Russia’s incursions in the Ukraine to Brexit; from Trump’s America-First policy to China’s forays into Africa; from Modi’s India to the hotbed of the Middle East, Samir Puri provides a bold new framework for understanding the world’s complex rivalries and politics. Organized by region, and covering vital topics such as security, foreign policy, national politics and commerce, The Shadows of Empire combines gripping history and astute analysis to explain why the history of empire affects us all in profound ways; it is also a plea for greater awareness, both as individuals and as nations, of how our varied imperial pasts have contributed to why we see the world in such different ways.
