Book Municipal Sludge Use in Land Reclamation

Download or read book Municipal Sludge Use in Land Reclamation written by William E. Sopper and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1993-06-11 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Municipal Sludge Use in Land Reclamation is a new state-of-the-science reference that combines data from recent research and case studies in an effort to examine the use of municipal sludge in the reclamation of disturbed land, particularly land disturbed by surface mining. This important resource examines current regulations concerning surface mining and the use of sludge on mined lands. It also provides an overview of current land reclamation projects and presents vital information on the environmental effects of sludge use on vegetation, soil quality, water quality, and animal nutrition and health. Mining professionals, regulatory agencies, scientists, municipal and industrial managers, environmental consultants, foresters, and ecologists will find Municipal Sludge Use in Land Reclamation to be an invaluable reference.

Book Alternative Uses for Sewage Sludge

Download or read book Alternative Uses for Sewage Sludge written by J. E. Hall and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treatment and disposal of sewage sludge is an expensive and environmentally sensitive problem that is growing worldwide. Sludge production is increasing whilst previously accepted methods for disposal are coming under pressure or even being phased out altogether so there is now an urgency to find cost-effective and innovative solutions that appease environmental and public pressures. The purpose of the conference recorded in these proceedings was to review the range of alternative disposal/recycling options for sewage sludge. The alternative uses considered are in land reclamation, forestry, compost and soil production, landfill, incineration, and energy and resource recovery. The papers presented include recent research findings and technological developments, as well as operational implementation of schemes, showing that beneficial re-use of sludge can be entirely compatible with a cost-effective and environmentally sensitive approach to sludge disposal.

Book Processing and Use of Organic Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes

Download or read book Processing and Use of Organic Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes written by P. L'Hermite and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of organic sludge and liquid agricultural wastes is a universal problem. Their production cannot be halted and as steps are taken to maintain or improve the quality of rivers and lakes it grows in quanti ty. The Commission's early awareness of the need for action to prepare for substantial growth in the Community's' sludge disposal problem led to the setting up of the COST 68 project to coordinate and guide European research and development work with particular emphasis on recycling sludge to agricultural land. Two years ago the field of research activi ties was extended to liquid agricultural wastes. This Symposium is the latest opportunity to provide a comprehensive review of the results of the project, to define current trends in practice and to establish by discussion the priorities for research over the next few years. The development of instrumentation and of analytical techniques during the period has extended our knowledge of the organic and inorganic constituents of sewage sludge and agricultural wastes and enabled us more readily to identify and measure the risks to which our general environment may be exposed when disposing of it. This evolution of understanding is a continuing process and an essential guide to the modification of disposal practices to achieve safer and more efficient operations. However, it is important to take a broad view of the application of research findings in the light of the considerable contrast in conditions in different parts of the world.

Download or read book Cadmium written by Ernest C. Foulkes and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The toxic properties of cadmium compounds have been well recognized in many species. There is little evidence to suggest a physiologic role for the metal. Rather, because of its long biologic half-life, cadmium acts as a cumulative poison, and even at quite low ambient concentrations, it can accumulate in mammals to values not insignificant in terms of critical toxic levels. The problem of cadmium toxicity has become especially important, as cadmium concentrations in the environment have begun to rise owing to a variety of human activities such as mining, the metallurgical industry, coal combustion, and the use of cadmium-containing fertilizers. It seemed appropriate, therefore, to assemble in one volume an up-to-date analysis of the mechanism of action of cadmium on biologic systems. Aspects of this field have repeatedly been reviewed in the past, and particular reference must be made to the volumes prepared by FRIBERG and collaborators from Sweden. Much outstanding work on cadmium has also been reported from Japan, and I am happy that investigators from both countries were able to contribute to the present volume. Obviously, this volume does not report a consensus by its contributors. The purpose of the work was to permit leading investigators in the field to present a critical review with sufficient documentation to support their interpretations and conclusions. A certain amount of overlap and disagreement between chapters was therefore unavoidable. The result, I hope, will be a useful state-of-the-art discussion.

Book Biology Of Wastewater Treatment 2nd Edition

Download or read book Biology Of Wastewater Treatment 2nd Edition written by Nicholas F Gray and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2004-04-06 with total page 1442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive text provides the reader with both a detailed reference and a unified course on wastewater treatment. Aimed at scientists and engineers, it deals with the environmental and biological aspects of wastewater treatment and sludge disposal. The book starts by examining the nature of wastewaters and how they are oxidized in the natural environment. An introductory chapter deals with wastewater treatment systems and examines how natural principles have been harnessed by man to treat his own waste in specialist reactors. The role of organisms is considered by looking at kinetics, metabolism and the different types of micro-organisms involved. All the major biological process groups are examined in detail, in highly referenced chapters; they include fixed film reactors, activated sludge, stabilization ponds, anaerobic systems and vegetative processes. Sludge treatment and disposal is examined with particular reference to the environmental problems associated with the various disposal routes. A comprehensive chapter on public health looks at the important waterborne organisms associated with disease, as well as removal processes within treatment systems. Biotechnology has had an enormous impact on wastewater treatment at every level, and this is explored in terms of resource reuse, biological conversion processes and environmental protection. Finally, there is a short concluding chapter that looks at the sustainability of waste water treatment. The text is fully illustrated and supported by over 3000 references./a
