The previous one named "Self-Organization and Associative Mem ory" (Springer Series in Information Sciences, Volume 8) came out in 1984. Since then the self-organizing neural-network algorithms called SOM and LVQ have become very popular, as can be seen from the many works re viewed in Chap. 9. The new results obtained in the past ten years or so have warranted a new monograph. Over these years I have also answered lots of questions; they have influenced the contents of the present book. I hope it would be of some interest and help to the readers if I now first very briefly describe the various phases that led to my present SOM research, and the reasons underlying each new step. I became interested in neural networks around 1960, but could not in terrupt my graduate studies in physics. After I was appointed Professor of Electronics in 1965, it still took some years to organize teaching at the uni versity. In 1968 - 69 I was on leave at the University of Washington, and D. Gabor had just published his convolution-correlation model of autoasso ciative memory. I noticed immediately that there was something not quite right about it: the capacity was very poor and the inherent noise and crosstalk were intolerable. In 1970 I therefore sugge~ted the auto associative correlation matrix memory model, at the same time as J.A. Anderson and K. Nakano.

It identifies more than 900 hundred structures (versus ca. 250 in previous avian atlases), 180 of them for the first time. It correlates avian and mammalian neuroanatomy on the basis of homologies and applies mammalian terms to homologous avian structures. This is the first atlas that represents the fundamental histogenetic domains of the vertebrate neuroaxis on the basis of sound fate-mapping and gene expression data. This results in a substantial increase in accuracy of delineations. Developmental molecular biologists will find it easier to extrapolate early neural tube patterns into mature structures. The modern trend to shift avian neuroanatomical nomenclature toward mammalian terminology by reference to postulated homologies has been expanded to the entire brain, but is not yet complete. This creates a new standard for comparative cross-reference, which can also be applied to reptilian-mammalian comparisons. Color photographs and matching diagrams of 65 coronal, 23 sagittal and 9 horizontal 140 micron-thick sections reacted histochemically for acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Thoroughly revised drawings. Updated view of the pallium, including the new concept of homology between the lateral pallium and the mammalian claustro-insular complex. Extensive introductory text and bibliography, presenting the background information, methodology and justification of delineations. For the first time in any species, this atlas depicts the fate-mapped natural embryonic boundaries in the postnatal brain. For the first time, we present color images of all the 6 histological stains (AChE, Nissl, TH, calbindin, calretinin and parvalbumin) on which delineations are based (accompanying Expert Consult eBook). Includes the Expert Consult eBook version, compatible with PC, Mac, and most mobile devices and eReaders, which allows readers to browse, search, and interact with content. Book excerpt: CMMM is a project that accompanied and was oriented by the priorities of municipalist activists in Belgrade, Berlin, and Barcelona. Spanning over 3.5 years from 2019 to 2023, it captured and supported the efforts of the Ministry of Space collective, AKS Gemeinwohl, Häuser Bewegen GIMA eG., Kollektiv Raumstation, and Observatori DESC to change the political paradigms shaping the contemporary housing emergency in the three cities. Coordinated by K LAB (TU Berlin) and supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the CMMM team employed various formats of critical mapping to display the legislations, policies, events, hierarchies, as well as the main actors and factors that are shaping the housing crisis. Next to selected examples of how critical mapping has been applied by peers and artists in the three cities, this book scripts the process through which our team created three interactive maps “How (un)affordable is housing in Belgrade?”, “Who buys Berlin?”, and “Stop Evictions!” for Barcelona, which can be explored on the project’s website: cmmm.eu. CMMM‘s outputs intend to support existing and future municipalist activists and collectives pushing to create policy alternatives that integrate the “housing as a right” principle. We hope that our work inspires activists and engaged professionals to employ critical mapping in their endeavors to inform and nudge public opinion, towards advancing demands for justice in the urban and beyond.
