Book Feasibility of MHD Submarine Propulsion

Download or read book Feasibility of MHD Submarine Propulsion written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the work performed during Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the collaborative research program established between Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company (NNS). Phase I of the program focused on the development of computer models for Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) propulsion. Phase 2 focused on the experimental validation of the thruster performance models and the identification, through testing, of any phenomena which may impact the attractiveness of this propulsion system for shipboard applications. The report discusses in detail the work performed in Phase 2 of the program. In Phase 2, a two Tesla test facility was designed, built, and operated. The facility test loop, its components, and their design are presented. The test matrix and its rationale are discussed. Representative experimental results of the test program are presented, and are compared to computer model predictions. In general, the results of the tests and their comparison with the predictions indicate that thephenomena affecting the performance of MHD seawater thrusters are well understood and can be accurately predicted with the developed thruster computer models.

Book Feasibility of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System nepps for a Submarine Volume Iii Hydrodynamic Model Tests

Download or read book Feasibility of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System nepps for a Submarine Volume Iii Hydrodynamic Model Tests written by A. J. Izzo and published by . This book was released on 1963 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the results of tests of a 1/28 scale model of a Novel Electric Power Propulsion System (NEPPS) and prediction of pro totype performance. Analysis of the test re sults leads to the following conclusions: (1) comparison of model cavitation data indicates that the cavitation performance of the NEPPS propeller is better than that of the conventional propeller; (2) torque measurements over a wide range of operating conditions indicate that propeller torque does not exceed the values originally assumed in the design of the elec trical machinery; (3) tests made at zero ad vance speed both for forward and reverse pro pulsor rotation indicates very good reverse thrust characteristics, the reverse thrust being 78% of the forward thrust; (4) the propulsive efficiency, based on the power at the blades of the model, is 90%; (5) self-propulsion was achieved at an advance ratio of 1.134; and (6) the NEPPS prototype submarine will attain a speed of approximately 24 knots. Book MHD magnetohydrodynamic Undersea Propulsion

Download or read book MHD magnetohydrodynamic Undersea Propulsion written by E. D. Doss and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses the reasons for the national and international renewed interest in the concept of MHD seawater propulsion. The main advantages of this concept are presented, together with some of the technical challenges that need to be overcome to achieve reliability, performance, and stealth. The paper discusses in more detail some of the technical issues and loss mechanisms influencing the thruster performance in terms of its electrical efficiency. Among the issues discussed are the jet losses and nozzle efficiency. Ohmic losses and frictional losses inside the thruster. Also discussed are the electrical end losses caused by the fringing magnetic field near the end of the electrodes. It has been shown that the frictional and end losses can have strong adverse effects on the thruster performance. Furthermore, a parametric study has been performed to investigate the effects of several parameters on the performance of the MHD thrusters. Those parameters include the magnetic field, thruster diameter, all roughness, flow velocity, and electrical load factor. The results of the parametric study indicate that the thruster efficiency increases with the strength of the magnetic field and thruster diameter, and decreases with the wall roughness and the flow velocity. 8 refs., 8 figs.
