Book Project Level Analysis of Fatal Construction Fall Accidents in Small Bulding Projects

Download or read book Project Level Analysis of Fatal Construction Fall Accidents in Small Bulding Projects written by Harrison K. Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construction in the U.S. is a significant industry by accounting for over 4.5% of the annual GDP and 8% of the entire workforce. However, the construction industry also accounts for over 21.7% of fatalities annually and has had over 6000 fatalities between the years 2003-2007. Fall fatalities have been targeted as one of the most serious areas within these fatalities. Many of these deaths are also located in the under 50K range of projects. This is particularly important considering that these contractors typically have limited resources to complete their job. There have been studies that have looked at construction falls and have confirmed the seriousness of construction falls but pointed out that certain areas can be looked at to devise preventative measures. Through project level analysis contractors can strategically manage resources to best prepare specific work groups for high risk activities identified in this paper. This thesis will also point out a need for more project level data within fatality reports, and a better regulated process of filling them out. Finally, this thesis plans to analyze how violations are attributed to these fatalities.

Book Assessment of Factors Affecting Fall Accidents Among Construction Workers

Download or read book Assessment of Factors Affecting Fall Accidents Among Construction Workers written by Rujan Kayastha and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry is essential for providing employment opportunities and plays a crucial role in the economy of every country worldwide. Despite being a vital sector, it is also one of the most hazardous industries, with fatal and non-fatal injuries occurring frequently due to its unique nature. Falls from height are the deadliest type of accident in the construction industry, accounting for one-third of all fatalities in the industry in the United States. This study investigated the various factors that contribute to falling accidents among construction workers and determined the nature and direction of associations between fall accidents and most predictor variables such as Trade types, Location of Falls, Musculoskeletal pains, Working hour, Age, Safety knowledge, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), and Sleep hours. Data were collected from workers in different occupations across various construction companies. A quantitative method through SPSS software was used to analyze the data collected from an onsite questionnaire survey based on approved IRB. The objective of the planned research was to examine and evaluate different risk factors and their impact on fall accidents using statistical analysis. The study determined the specific effects of these risk factors on fall accidents and presented the nature and direction of the relationships between them. By doing so, the study offered valuable insights into the development of efficient safety measures to prevent fall accidents in construction industries.

Book One death is too many

Download or read book One death is too many written by Rita Donaghy and published by Stationery Office. This book was released on 2009-07-08 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 211 men died in the construction industry in the three year period 2005-06 to 2007-08. This "unacceptable level of fatalities" led to the commissioning of this inquiry, though Rita Donaghy remarks that there is no public sense of shock at the regular toll of fatalities in the industry and there is a need to raise the profile of these tragedies so that a construction fatality becomes socially unacceptable. The construction industry generally is modelled to provide maximum flexibility. Consequently the majority of functions are contracted out and at least 40 per cent of workers are self-employed or in the Construction Industry Scheme. The advantages are obvious in that it reduces overheads and some commentators argue that it improves profitability and productivity. The disadvantages are that it becomes more difficult for a safety culture to flourish, worker engagement is weak, employment security and continuity is minimal and skills training is at best patchy. The findings of the Review's investigation of a number of case studies reveal a combination of factors for each fatal accident of which the most frequently cited are: (a) the incidence of training factors, experience; (b) information and advice deficiencies; (c) risk perception; (d) rescheduling of work without planning; (e) minor / one-off jobs; (f) compliance; (g) equipment operability, space, personal protective equipment (PPE) issues and tools not designed to fit the user / task. 28 recommendations are made.

Book Integrating Information in Built Environments

Download or read book Integrating Information in Built Environments written by Adriana X Sanchez and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-20 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In an increasingly globalised built environment industry, achieving higher levels of integration across organisational and software boundaries can lead to improved economic, social and environmental outcomes. This book is the direct result of a collaborative global network of industry and academic researchers spread across nine countries as part of CIB’s (International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction) Task Group 90 (TG90) Information Integration in Construction (IICON). The book provides a broad view of some of the opportunities and challenges brought by integrating information across organisational and system boundaries in the built environment industry. Chapters cover a large range of topics and are separated into three sections: resources, processes and added value. They provide a much-needed international perspective on a current global evolution in the industry and present leading original research and valuable lessons for researchers, industry practitioners, government clients and policy makers across the industry. Key features include: a broad range of topics that are not covered elsewhere in the literature; contributions from a diverse group of industry research leaders from across the globe; exemplar case studies providing real-world examples of where information integration has been a key factor for success or lack thereof has been at the root cause of failure; an analysis of future priority areas for research and development investment as well as their strategic implications for public and private decision-makers; the book will deliver innovation in best practice methodology for information sharing across disciplines and between the design, construction and asset management sectors.
