Book Effect of Surface Processing Variables on Hydrogen Embrittlement of Steel Fasteners

Download or read book Effect of Surface Processing Variables on Hydrogen Embrittlement of Steel Fasteners written by Salim Brahimi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Incremental step load testing was used in accordance with ASTM F1940 to rank a number coating processes used in the fastener industry for their propensity to cause internal hydrogen embrittlement. The results showed that coating permeability has a first order effect, while the quantity of hydrogen introduced by the process has a second order effect. Pure zinc electroplating processes, alkaline and acid, were found to be the most embrittling, owing to the low permeability of zinc. The least embrittling processes were zinc-nickel, alkaline and acid, owing to the high permeability of Zn-Ni coatings. Non-electrolytic processes, namely phosphating, mechanical galvanising, DacrometRTM and Magni 555RTM were found to be non-embrittling. Hot dip galvanising was found to be highly embrittling, evidently due to trapped hydrogen being released by the thermal shock of up-quenching upon immersion in molten zinc. The full effect of up-quenching on the metallurgical and mechanical properties of high strength steel requires further investigation." --

New sections on materials, threads, and their strength have been added, and coverage of FEA for design analysis is now included. Referencing the latest standards, this new edition combines fastener materials, explanation of how fasteners are made, and how fasteners fit together, supplementing the basic design coverage included in previous versions of this authoritative text. Introduction to the Design and Behavior of Bolted Joints: Non-Gasketed Joints will be of interest to engineers involved in the design and testing of bolted joints.

Book Alloy and Composition Dependence of Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility in High Strength Steel Fasteners

Download or read book Alloy and Composition Dependence of Hydrogen Embrittlement Susceptibility in High Strength Steel Fasteners written by Salim Brahimi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "High strength steel fasteners characterised by tensile strengths above 1100 MPa are often used in critical applications, where a failure can have catastrophic consequences. Preventing Hydrogen Embrittlement (HE) failure is a fundamental concern implicating the entire fastener supply chain. Hydrogen embrittlement results in loss of ductility and, consequently, a loss of strength, caused by atomic hydrogen in combination with tensile stress that can lead to sudden and unexpected brittle fracture after certain time. This research aims to better define the relationship between chemical composition, microstructural characteristics and HE susceptibility of high-strength steel used for manufacturing mechanical fasteners. HE susceptibility is a function of the material condition, which is comprehensively described by the metallurgical and mechanical properties. Hardness/material strength have a first order effect on HE susceptibility which increases significantly above 1200 MPa and is characterised by a ductile-brittle transition. At a given hardness and for a given concentration of hydrogen, the critical strength above which the ductile-brittle transition begins can vary due to second order effects. In this work, testing and observations made on nine alloys, each quenched and tempered to four hardness levels, illustrate second order differences in susceptibility that are dependent on chemistry and heat treatment, and ultimately on microstructure." --

Book Fundamentals of Hydrogen Embrittlement

Download or read book Fundamentals of Hydrogen Embrittlement written by Michihiko Nagumo and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second edition of the one originally published in 2016, as the first comprehensive treatment on the fundamentals of hydrogen embrittlement of metallic materials, mainly steel. The book provides students and researchers engaging in hydrogen problems with a unified view of the subject. Establishing reliable principles for materials design against hydrogen embrittlement and assessing their performance are recent urgent industrial needs in developing high-strength steel for hydrogen energy equipment and weight-reducing vehicles. The interdisciplinary nature of the subject, covering metal physics, materials science, and mechanics of fracture, has disturbed a profound understanding of the problem. In this book, previous studies are critically reviewed, and supplemental descriptions of fundamental ideas are presented when necessary. Emphasis is placed on experimental facts, with particular attention to their implication rather than phenomenological appearance. The adopted experimental conditions are also noted since the operating mechanism of hydrogen might differ by material and environment. For theories, employed assumptions and premises are noted to examine their versatility. Progress in the past decade in experimental and theoretical tools is remarkable and has nearly unveiled characteristic features of hydrogen embrittlement. Proposed models have almost covered feasible aspects of the function of hydrogen. This second edition has enriched the contents with recent crucial findings. Chapters on the manifestation of embrittlement in the deterioration of mechanical properties and microscopic features are reorganized, and the description is revised for the convenience of readers’ systematic understanding. A new chapter is created for delayed fracture in atmospheric environments as a conclusive subject of critical ideas presented in this book.

Book Examination of Cadmium Plated Aircraft Fasteners for Hydrogen Embrittlement

Download or read book Examination of Cadmium Plated Aircraft Fasteners for Hydrogen Embrittlement written by Gordon A. Bruggeman and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Army Technology Materials Laboratory (AMTL) participated in a possible hydrogen embrittlement (HE) problem involving a variety of cadmium-plated AISI4340 steel fasteners used in OH-58 and CH-47 helicopters. These fasteners were being reworked at an Army depot where cadmium plating was carried out according to Federal Specification QQ-P-416C. A three-month period was considered suspect for cadmium-plated items processed at the depot, and AMTL was supplied with a number of fasteners (bolts), both new and reworked at the depot during the suspect period, for evaluation. These fasteners were sustained load tested for evidence of HE. All of the bolts provided by the depot survived at least 200 h of testing without cracking or fracture. Several of the bolts which were plated during the suspect period and which had passed HE relief tests were deliberately fractured for examination of failure mode. The fracture topography showed no evidence of HE effects. Hardness and cadmium plating thickness measurements were consistent with specification requirements.

Book Hydrogen Embrittlement of Metal Fasteners Due to Phosphoric Acid Containment System PACS Exposure Volume 5 Delivery Order 4 Task 2

Download or read book Hydrogen Embrittlement of Metal Fasteners Due to Phosphoric Acid Containment System PACS Exposure Volume 5 Delivery Order 4 Task 2 written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine if metal fasteners are susceptible to hydrogen embrittlement due to exposure to a phosphoric acid containment system (PACS) surface preparation. A PACS is used to anodize aluminum surfaces in preparation for adhesive bonding. Due to the containment system provided by PACS, it has the ability to be used in aircraft repair applications. Concerns have been raised as to whether the PACS surface preparation may be used in an area that contains metal fasteners. The objective was accomplished by exposing mechanically loaded fasteners of various metal materials to PACS. Following the PACS exposure, the fasteners were rinsed and reloaded for 96 hours. Failure of the fasteners during either the PACS exposure or the sustained loading deemed the fastener embrittled.
