Main Findings Smallholder farmers in developing countries play a key role in meeting the future food demands of a growing and increasingly rich and urbanized population. However, smallholders are not a homogeneous group that should be supported at all costs. Whereas some smallholder farmers have the potential to undertake profitable commercial activities in the agricultural sector, others should be supported in exiting agriculture and seeking nonfarm employment opportunities. For smallholder farmers with profit potential, their ability to be successful is hampered by such challenges as climate change, price shocks, limited financing options, and inadequate access to healthy and nutritious food. By overcoming these challenges, smallholders can move from subsistence to commercially oriented agricultural systems, increase their profits, and operate at an efficient scalethereby helping to do their part in feeding the worlds hungry.

All six studies are from Africa. They cover: (1) jatropha chains in Burkina Faso and Mali; (2) oilseeds in Uganda; (3) litchi in Madagascar; (4) cashew in Benin; (5) milk products in Senegal; and (6) bananas, pigs and aquaculture in Uganda. There is a range of definitions of inclusive value chains but such chains are generally considered to be those that seek to obtain supply from poorer farmers, thereby maximising farmers’ access to market opportunities. Recent developments in production and marketing systems do not automatically benefit small-scale farmers and conscious efforts need to be made to achieve positive results for them. Even so, not all farmers can be included, for reasons such as their location, farm size and natural resources, capacity to meet increasingly strict product standards, and the farmers’ aversion to risk.

In the six countries under review in the NENA region (Egypt, Lebanon, Morocco, Mauritania, Sudan and Tunisia), agriculture is carried out primarily by small-scale family farmers, the majority of whom run the risk of falling into the poverty trap, largely due to the continuous fragmentation of inherited landholdings. As such, the development of small-scale family farming can no longer be based solely on intensifying agriculture, as the farmers are not able to produce sufficient marketable surplus due to the limited size of their landholdings. An approach based strictly on agricultural activity is also insufficient (as small-scale family farms have already diversified their livelihoods with off-farm activities). In fact, developing small-scale farming cannot be achieved by focusing strictly on t he dimension of production.

This report assesses the potential threat, examining various forms of livestock production in Brazil, India, the Philippines, and Thailand. Findings show that the competitiveness of smallholder farms depends on the opportunity cost of family labor and farmers' ability to overcome barriers to the acquisition of production- and market-related information and assets. Pro-poor livestock development depends, therefore, on the strengthening of institutions that will help smallholders overcome the disproportionately high transaction costs in securing quality inputs and obtaining market recognition for quality outputs. It's just so difficult to make a living as a full-fledged farmer because there's so much work involved and not enough demand for it. The big time farmers, the ones that once were able to sustain large farms and take care of their entire family are having trouble making ends meet. Part of the reason for that is mini farming but most of it is the lack of business available in larger markets. Major farmers are trying to compete with other major farmers for markets like grocery stores and that's a really difficult market to break into. If you start mini farming however, the only people you're going to be competing against are the other local farmers in your area. What you'll usually find is that there's plenty of people looking for locally grown products and not quite enough people who are selling them. So this can actually be a pretty profitable niche for you.
