Book Farewell to Old England Forever

Download or read book Farewell to Old England Forever written by Doug Limbrick and published by Publicious Pty Limited. This book was released on 2017-04-13 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author's objective is to explain, describe and evoke wonder about those people who chose to leave family and friends forever and sail half way around the world in a small vessel in order to emigrate to a remote place they had little knowledge about. In order to understand this story the reader needs to know what it was like in the colonies in the nineteenth century, how the home and colonial governments felt about emigration/immigration, what was involved in emigrating, the reasons why people emigrated, who decided to emigrate, what the emigrant vessels were like, what the emigrants experienced on this long sea passage and the experience on arrival. Researched and written over a period of some eight years the book draws on a large number of original and old documents, manuscripts, monographs, letters, journals, diaries, ships logs and newspaper articles and a considerable amount of old and contemporary published material found in a number of the major Australian Libraries. The research work included investigating the vast amount of material copied onto microfilm as part of the Australian Joint Copying Project by the National Library of Australia and the State Library of NSW. As a result of this research the book includes many quotations from letters, diaries, newspaper articles and old documents to illustrate points and bring a nineteenth century perspective. The use of personal stories also adds interest and reality for the reader.

Book The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs

Download or read book The New Penguin Book of English Folk Songs written by Julia Bishop and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2012-06-07 with total page 666 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the Spectator's Books of the Year 2012 'Farewell and adieu to you fair Spanish ladies Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain For we've received orders for to sail for old England But we hope in a short while to see you again' One of the great English popular art forms, the folk song can be painful, satirical, erotic, dramatic, rueful or funny. They have thrived when sung on a whim to a handful of friends in a pub; they have bewitched generations of English composers who have set them for everything from solo violin to full orchestra; they are sung in concerts, festivals, weddings, funerals and with nobody to hear but the singer. This magical new collection brings together all the classic folk songs as well as many lesser-known discoveries, complete with music and annotations on their original sources and meaning. Published in cooperation with the English Folk Dance and Song Society, it is a worthy successor to Ralph Vaughan Williams and A.L.Lloyd's original Penguin Book of English Folk Songs. 'Her keen eye did glitter like the bright stars by night The robe she was wearing was costly and white Her bare neck was shaded with her long raven hair And they called her pretty Susan, the pride of Kildare' In association with EFDSS, the English Folk Dance and Song Society

Book Migrations

    Book Details:
  • Author : DK
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2022-06-27
  • ISBN : 0744068584
  • Pages : 1018 pages

Download or read book Migrations written by DK and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2022-06-27 with total page 1018 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover how the migration of peoples has shaped the modern world. This beautifully illustrated book details the movement of people and cultures around the world – from the early migrations of Homo erectus out of Africa 50,000 years ago to modern refugee movements and migrations. Through vibrant photographs, illustrations, and maps, Migrations explores famous (and infamous) movements in history, from the Middle Passage and Trail of Tears to the California Gold Rush, the Italian diaspora, and the Windrush generation. While many traditional world histories focus on (mainly European) “exploration” and “discovery,” Migrations explores the story of each continent and focuses on cultures rather than conquest. Migrations highlights the human story and the positives: what has survived, not just what was destroyed. Migrations is a history book with a fresh perspective, focusing on a topic ever more relevant in the modern world: Where did we come from? And what brought us here?
