Book The Responsive Workplace

Download or read book The Responsive Workplace written by Sheila B. Kamerman and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the American workforce has changed in recent years to accommodate an increasing number of working parents, the workplace itself must also adapt. Sheila Kamerman and Alfred Kahn, two of the most respected authorities on work and the American family, explore in this study the ways in which the workplace has responded to social change. They examine innovations in the workplace as well as enduring concerns--fringe benefits, day care and other services, and employers' policies at the workplace. And, they assess employers' adequacy in assisting parents of young children to manage simultaneously their work and family roles. In doing so, Kamerman and Kahn separate over-optimistic "wish lists" from reality, and mere claims of certain effects from observed results. They also look at some critical benefits and services in detail, delineating which are useful and practical. The authors consider whether a workplace-based pattern of provision will meet everyone's needs and, if not, what alternatives are possible. While endorsing a serious role for employers, they stress that government must also take a role in respect to families of working parents.

Book Cities Counties Kids and Families

Download or read book Cities Counties Kids and Families written by Sid Gardner and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2005 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities, Counties, Kids, and Families outlines a model for developing strategic policy for responding to children and family issues in local governments. It also discusses fifteen strategic roles that local government can play-most of which do not require direct funding, but depends upon the scarce resource of leadership. The book describes policy and analytical tools used by cities and counties, and makes a case for using these tools more strategically. It calls for strategic policy to respond to the four critical forces affecting children and family policy: families; race and culture; communities and neighborhoods; and regionalism. Finally, the book reviews policy in four critical areas affecting local governments: education and school readiness; substance abuse; youth development; and family support programs. It concludes with predictions of issues that will affect cities and counties in the future.

Book Corporations Businesses and Families

Download or read book Corporations Businesses and Families written by Roma S. Hanks and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporations, Businesses, and Families offers a comprehensive look at the relationship between family systems and work organizations. Discussions ranging from work-family issues of the past such as the decline of the role of the family in the workplace during the rise of labor unions, to current trends toward increased corporate provision of child care, introduce a historical overview of the changes in work-family relationships from various perspectives. Special topics of interest include methodological strategies for researchers investigating work-family issues within the corporation, perspectives of minority families in corporate work settings, and family responsiveness in military organizations. In addition to examining the relationship between the corporation and the families of its employees, the authors explore the systems of management and succession in family-run corporations and businesses, and the family business aspects of teleministries. Researchers, students, human resource managers, and business policymakers will benefit from the information in this authoritative new book. The trends and issues identified in this illuminating volume will be useful in planning corporate initiatives that affect families, and in training students in business and social science programs where work-family issues are of interest.

Download or read book Becoming A Family written by Rena D. Harold and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-08 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The movement from young adulthood through coupling and the transition to parenthood may be among the most universal adult developmental transitions. These passages hold interest for all of us, but especially for those who study the psychological, familial, and sociocultural components of development, all of which interact and influence each other. This book enhances understanding of family-life development by shedding light on the meanings that family members ascribe to the developmental process of becoming a family. This is achieved through qualitative analysis of narratives through which individuals and families explain themselves, their thinking, and their behavior. These family narratives are windows into individual and family identity, as well as descriptions of connections to others. The book addresses issues including identity, child characteristics, social support, and work. Each chapter includes a review of seminal literature, parents' comments and ideas about the topic, and a discussion of practice, policy, and research implications.
