Book Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation for the LAMBDA Flight Vehicle

Download or read book Failure Identification Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation for the LAMBDA Flight Vehicle written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study develops and investigates the performance of a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimator (MMAE) to detect and identify control surface and sensor failures on the LAMBDA flight vehicle (a URV developed by Wright Laboratories). The MMAE uses a bank of Kalman filters that predict the aircraft response to a given input, with each filter model based on a different failure hypothesis, and then forms the residual difference between the prediction and sensor measurements for each filter. The MMAE uses these residuals to determine the probabilities of the failures that are modeled by the Kalman filters. Initially the MMAE identified all these failures within 4 seconds of onset. Various performance improvement techniques were researched and the identification time was reduced to less than 2 seconds after failure onset. This improvement was mostly due to an increase in the penalty for measurement differences, and through returning of the Kalman filters. The MMAE performance was tested at the boundaries of the LAMBDA flight envelope, with good performance found at points close to the design flight condition. The performance at points that were far from the design flight condition indicates that gain scheduling is required to provide adequate performance across the entire envelope.

Book Flight Control Failure Detection and Control Redistribution Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation with Filter Spawning

Download or read book Flight Control Failure Detection and Control Redistribution Using Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation with Filter Spawning written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the current research, the MMAE with Filter Spawning and Control Redistribution (MMAE/FS/CR) are used together to identify failures and apply appropriate corrections. This effort explores the performance of the MMAE/FS/CR in different regions of the flight envelope using model and gain scheduling. The MMAE/FS/CR is able to detect complete and partial actuator/surface failures, as well as complete sensor failures. Once the actuator/surface failure is identified and the effectiveness is determined in the case of partial failures, proper control is applied in order to accomplish the desired pilot command. Improvements in the algorithm are required in order to enhance the MMAE/FS/CR ability to detect failures while undergoing maneuvering flight. This investigation shows the ability of the MMAE/FS to detect failures while transitioning through the flight envelope and while performing pilot commanded maneuvers. It also improves and demonstrates the CR ability to compensate for complete or partial actuator/surface failures.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the though that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemi nation. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 37 (thesis year 1992) a total of 12,549 thesis titles from 25 Canadian and 153 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 37 reports theses submitted in 1992, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Applied to the ViSTA F 16 with Actuator and Sensor Failures

Download or read book Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Applied to the ViSTA F 16 with Actuator and Sensor Failures written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) algorithm is applied to the Variable Stability In-flight Simulator Test Aircraft (VISTA) F-16 at a low dynamic pressure flight condition (0.4 Mach at 20000 ft). A complete F-16 flight control system is modeled containing the longitudinal and lateral-directional axes. Single and dual actuator and sensor failures are simulated including: complete actuator failures, partial actuator failures, complete sensor failures, increased sensor noise, sensor biases, dual complete actuator failures, dual complete sensor failures, and combinations of actuator and sensor failures. Failure scenarios are examined in both maneuvering and straight and level flight conditions. Single scalar residual monitoring techniques are evaluated with suggestions for improved performance. A hierarchical moving bank structure is utilized for multiple failure scenarios. Simultaneous dual failures are included within the study. White Gaussian noise is included to simulate the effects of atmospheric disturbances, and white Gaussian noise is added to the measurements to simulate the effects of sensor noise. Kalman Filtering, Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation, MMAE, Failure detection and isolation, Bayesian, MMAC, multiple Model Adaptive Control.

Book Implementation and Demonstration of a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Failure Detection System for the F 16

Download or read book Implementation and Demonstration of a Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation Failure Detection System for the F 16 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Multiple Model Adaptive Estimation (MMAE) algorithm is implemented with the fully nonlinear six-degree-of-motion, Simulation Rapid-Prototyping Facility (SRF) VISTA F-16 software simulation tool. The algorithm is demonstrated to be capable of identifying flight critical aircraft actuator and sensor failures at a low dynamic pressure (20,000 ft, .4 Mach). Research included single and dual complete failures. Tuning methods for accommodating model mismatch, including addition of discrete dynamics pseudonoise and continuous measurement pseudonoise, are discussed and demonstrated. Scalar residuals within each filter are also examined and characterized for possible use as an additional failure declaration voter. Robustness to sensor failures provided by MMAE-based control is also demonstrated. An investigation of algorithm performance off the nominal design conditions is accomplished as a first step towards full flight envelope coverage. The algorithm is composed of a bank of Kalman filters modeled to match particular hypotheses of the real world. Each presumes a single failure in one of the flight critical actuators (left/right stabilators, left/right flaperon, rudder), or sensors (forward velocity, angle of attack, pitch rate, normal acceleration, roll rate, yaw rate, and lateral acceleration), and one presumes no failure. For dual failures, a hierarchical structure is used to keep the number of on-line filters to a minimum. This research advances the technology by testing algorithm performance against the most complete simulation model currently available.
