The book discusses the different dimensions of preceptorship as well as addresses directly the teaching-learning climate, goals and objectives of preceptorship, and the nature of the teaching-learning experience. Other areas covered are a look at the student as a learner and the all-important area of communication. A final bonus chapter offers useful suggestions on the setting up or instituting of a preceptorship program.

Book The Relationship Between Participation in the Student Nurse Preceptor Program and Nursing Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Relationship Between Participation in the Student Nurse Preceptor Program and Nursing Job Satisfaction written by Margaret-Mary Swayne and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reason for conducting this research project was the increasing rate of nurse turnover and job dissatisfaction at the staff nurse level. Today's professional nurse is overworked and over burdened with exceptionally difficult patient caseloads. Self esteem and self worth become low when job dissatisfaction is high. The goal of nursing administrators and nurse educators should be focused on retaining staff nurses and providing for high worker satisfaction. The purpose of this research study was to determine if participating in a student nurse preceptorship program increased the level of job satisfaction- experienced by the staff nurse. The Employee Assessment Tool is a thirty-five item quality of work analysis tool used to determine the importance of work factors and their relationship to job satisfaction. The tool was distributed to thirty nurses who were presently preceptors for student nurses, and thirty nurses who were not preceptors for students, and one hundred percent of the nurses responded and returned the questionnaire to this researcher. The hypothesis stated that nurses who work as student nurse preceptors have an enhanced sense of job satisfaction over nurses wh6 do not work as student nurses preceptors. This hypothesis was not found to be supported from the research data collected. A T-test was used to statistically analyze the data. Limitations of the study such as controlling for the number of times a nurse had worked as a preceptor, and that only one college program and hospital were used, may have lead to the unsupported results obtained. Recommendations for future research include using a larger sample population with greater control over how many times the nurse was a preceptor. More intensive research is needed in order to improve staff nurse retention and to increase the quality of the job satisfaction felt by the staff nurse.

Book Exploring Perceptions of Staff Registered Nurse Preceptors for Undergraduate Pre licensure Nursing Students

Download or read book Exploring Perceptions of Staff Registered Nurse Preceptors for Undergraduate Pre licensure Nursing Students written by Katherine C. Hall and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Staff nurses are increasingly called upon to accept more responsibilities and roles in addition to provider of patient care, including that of preceptor. Aside from dealing with demands of high acuity patients, working long hours with inadequate staffing, and carrying heavy workloads, nurses may view teaching and supervising students as an additional burden, time-consuming, and not part of their role. The purpose of this dissertation was to explore staff nurse experiences as preceptors to undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students. Emphasis was placed on exploring RN's perceptions of the role, specifically the preparation for, support in, and understanding of what the role entails. The following question was used to guide the study: What are staff nurses' experiences with precepting undergraduate, pre-licensure nursing students? A naturalistic inquiry within an interpretive paradigm guided this qualitative exploratory study. The sample consisted of nine licensed registered staff nurses with experience as preceptors in tertiary care settings in Northeast Tennessee. Most participants were currently working in or had worked in the role of preceptor for undergraduate nursing students within the past six months. All nine participants were female. Most participants were between the ages of 30-39. Participants were licensed as registered nurses anywhere from 2 to 14 years. Participants attended one of two focus groups lasting between 60-90 minutes each. A semi-structured interview guide assisted in data collection. Transcripts were analyzed using conventional content analysis. Findings suggest that while preceptors perceive information about teaching and learning styles to be beneficial, they did not perceive a formal class essential to preparing them for the preceptor role. Preceptors perceived most support from their co-workers and least support from nurse managers. Faculty seemed to be silent partners. The primary role function is Protector, with Socializer and Teacher as secondary role functions. Preceptors have a strong empathetic drive to protect students from negative experiences, to protect patients from harm, to protect their own professional identities, and to protect the nature of the nursing profession itself. Preceptors perceived students with overconfident attitudes as unsafe. Findings have significant implications for development of professional values in practice and education.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Future of Nursing explores how nurses' roles, responsibilities, and education should change significantly to meet the increased demand for care that will be created by health care reform and to advance improvements in America's increasingly complex health system. At more than 3 million in number, nurses make up the single largest segment of the health care work force. They also spend the greatest amount of time in delivering patient care as a profession. Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.
