Book excerpt: The challenges of nursing school exceed the preparation and abilities of many students despite rigorous admission requirements. Nursing faculty strive to find ways to keep attrition rates as low as possible while maintaining the high academic standards necessary for students to become successful and safe nurses. Unfortunately, attrition rates have remained high for decades. To help students achieve academic success, nursing faculty need to learn more about what students believe impacts their success. Using Jeffreys’ Nursing Universal Retention and Success (NURS) (2012) model as a comparative model, this study explored the beliefs of undergraduate nursing students related to factors that impact academic success in the first year of a nursing program. Findings indicated nursing students believe there are multiple factors impacting their academic success and they have the responsibility to address each of those factors to promote their own persistence and progress through their educational program. Participants recognized students’ responsibility related to study skills, time management, priorities, and attitudes. Participants also noted the need for support systems they can access to help them cope with stress and anxiety. Nurse educators can use the findings of this study to develop programs to assist students and provide the necessary supports to increase student retention.

Yet, we lose some of the potential nurses in the Practical Nursing Program (PNP) for reasons that may be avoidable. The purposes of this project were to determine (a) what variables influence attrition in the PNP, (b) if these variables differ as they proceed in the PNP, and (c) if a relationship exists between hardiness, outside encouragement/support and the dropout rate. The conceptual framework was derived from Bean and Metzner (1985) and Jeffreys (1998). The research designs were quantitative descriptive, cross sectional, and a quantitative correlational. A convenience sample of Practical nursing students in a technical college in Central United States (N=93) was used. Data were collected by the researcher using two questionnaires. The first questionnaire addressed academic, background and environmental variables. The second questionnaire addressed hardiness. The variables that influenced attrition were financial, academics, transportation, and family responsibility. Hardiness was not found significant in relationship to the dropout rate nor was it affected by outside encouragement or support. Practical nursing students, who had outside support and encouragement had lower attrition rates.

Book excerpt: Abstract : Using Wylie's (2004) Model of Non-Traditional Student Attrition as the theoretical framework, results of the analysis revealed student- and nursing-program-related factors that facilitate or hinder successful completion of the program. Barriers of completion included (a) amount and difficulty of course requirements, (b) difficult test rubrics, (c) ineffective instructors, (d) full-time teaching, (e) difficulty in balancing work, family, and school responsibilities, (f) language barriers, and (g) separation of work and school environment. Results of the study further showed that resolution of students' personal obstacles hindering program completion included (a) time and financial management, (b) establishing good relationships with instructors, and (c) use of student support services. While there is a plethora of extensive studies that have developed theories to explain students' early departure from nursing programs, there are only limited studies conducted with respect to nurse programs' retention or attrition in terms of the factors that lead to success in nursing programs. This current study investigated the lived experiences of students currently enrolled in an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) program as well as those who have dropped out of the program at a Midwest community college. Data were collected from 13 participants who participated in the semi-structured interview and were analyzed through a modified Moustakas (1994) van Kaam method. Results can be utilized by educational institutions to create ways to eliminate these barriers. Colleges might be more willing to provide additional student support during enrollment if the external factors that help students achieve success could be identified.

Book excerpt: The overall purpose of this quantitative study was to examine which factors, available during the screening and admission process, were related to successful completion of the first year of a dual enrollment program (baccalaureate and associate degree). This is a non-experimental, descriptive, correlational study based on retrospective data gathered on 3 cohorts of RIBN students. The principal research aim addressed in this research was: "Which factors contribute most to dually enrolled students' early success in college?" Criteria for inclusion in this study were all students who were admitted to the Eastern North Carolina RIBN collaborative or the Western North Carolina RIBN collaborative between 2012-2015. This included 221 students across both programs. A variation on Schlossberg's transitions theory (1981) provided a broad conceptual model as an organizing framework for this study. Schlossberg's model utilizes situation, self, support, and strategies as a framework for understanding transitions. This study's adapted model used program characteristics, personal characteristics, and student success characteristics to predict attrition. With a better understanding of which factors available during the admission process were related to student success, better admission and program support decisions can be made. Students who are dually enrolled in high school courses and college courses simultaneously are commonplace (Nachazel and Dziuba, 2014). However, programs with dually enrolled community college and university students are relatively new entities. Given society's crucial need for baccalaureate prepared nurses as well as the economic environment of accountability and budgetary concerns in higher education, student success and retention in these programs is critically important (American Association of Colleges of Nursing, 2014; Obama, 2009). This study found that SAT reading scores are statistically related to academic attrition in the first year of North Carolina's largest two RIBN programs. High school GPA was also related to first year success. The best predictor of non-academic attrition was age. Older students were more likely to drop out of the program due to non-academic reasons. Future research should focus on larger and more diverse samples of dually enrolled students. Long-term follow-up with exit interviews may also yield useful data on students who leave the dual enrollment programs.

Nurses therefore have valuable insights and unique abilities to contribute as partners with other health care professionals in improving the quality and safety of care as envisioned in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) enacted this year. Nurses should be fully engaged with other health professionals and assume leadership roles in redesigning care in the United States. To ensure its members are well-prepared, the profession should institute residency training for nurses, increase the percentage of nurses who attain a bachelor's degree to 80 percent by 2020, and double the number who pursue doctorates. Furthermore, regulatory and institutional obstacles-including limits on nurses' scope of practice-should be removed so that the health system can reap the full benefit of nurses' training, skills, and knowledge in patient care. In this book, the Institute of Medicine makes recommendations for an action-oriented blueprint for the future of nursing.

Book excerpt: Student success in a nursing program is a complex process that involves the interaction of student attributes, academic, psychological, social, and environmental factors. Using the Jeffreys's (2015) Nursing Undergraduate Retention and Success (NURS) Model, the purpose of this research was to determine the individual student profile characteristics, academic characteristics, and personal attributes and attitudes that predict outcome in a baccalaureate nursing program. Three hundred sixty-three records of students admitted to a baccalaureate nursing program at a small, public university in southwest Georgia from May 2009-August 2014 were reviewed. Binomial logistic regression analysis was utilized to determine if three categories of independent variables: (a) student profile factors, (b) self-reported attitudes and attributes, and (c) academic factors could predict student outcome in the nursing program. Research results from this study found that student profile factors, specifically age, sex, program designation, and socioeconomic status were not predictive of outcome. Further, results found that academic factors, grade point average, and TEAS test scores were highly predictive of student outcome. Lastly, the research found that higher scores in self-reported critical thinking ability and learning style preference were predictive of a favorable student outcome. Of importance to nursing education is how these results can be utilized for review and revision of admission, and progression policies. The use of GPA and standardized test scores is a common practice for admission committees and will likely continue to be a significant factor in admissions decisions. Further research is needed as to how other factors that affect student outcomes, attrition or completion could be used to guide admission decisions.
