Book excerpt: This qualitative, phenomenological study examines why Minnesota school superintendents leave their positions. Based on previous studies, this research looks at (a) the factors contributing to exits from the superintendency in Minnesota; (b) the challenges that superintendents deal with; (c) the impact of superintendents' relationships with their school boards on their decision to leave; (d) the opinions of the exiting superintendents regarding conditions that might have prevented them from leaving the job; and (e) the suggestions these superintendents have for school-board members or other, current, superintendents. Forty-eight superintendents or former superintendents, all of whom had left their jobs during the 2010-2011 school year, were contacted and asked to participate in the study. All 18 superintendents interviewed were from rural or suburban districts. Some left due to retirement, some due to conflicts with their school board. Almost three-quarters of them listed finances among the stresses they dealt with. Half of the 18 superintendents claimed there were circumstances that could have been changed to keep them in their school districts. The study concludes with a call for further research into the experiences of superintendents and school-board members.
